Barclays' mobile banking app is back up and running after three-hour outage

Barclays'mobile banking app is back up and running after a three-hour outage that saw thousands of customers unable to access their accounts.  

According to Down Detector, which monitors website outages, some 2,000 users began experiencing issues at around 06:00 BST. 

Barclays confirmed the issue had been fixed shortly after 09:00 BST but did not elaborate on the cause of it. Neither did HSBC and NatWest when they both suffered online banking problems on Monday. 

A Barclays spokesman told MailOnline: 'We apologise to customers who have been unable to access the Barclays app, and can confirm the service has been restored. 

'Our online banking and automated telephone service were not impacted and customers were able to transfer funds, make payments and check balances.'

A number of people had taken to social media to express their frustration over the outage.

One Barclays customer wrote on Twitter: 'Barclays is there a problem with online banking can't see my account??'

Another added: 'Is anyone else's Barclays app down?? Can't see any of my accounts when I open the app?'

The majority of issues reported – 68 per cent – related to mobile banking, while a further 25 per cent were about online banking and 7 per cent mobile log ins, according to Down Detector. 

On Twitter, the bank acknowledged it was having problems, writing: 'We're looking into the problem now, and we'll update you here as soon as possible.'

Replying to one customer, Barclays UK Help tweeted: 'Thanks for your message and please don't worry! We're aware of the issues with the app, the team are working hard to fix this ASAP.'

Down Detector gets network status updates from various sources including social media and reports submitted to its website. 

The website's 'heat map' of user-submitted problem reports showed that affected customers were mostly in London and Plymouth, with other cities such as Manchester, Birmingham and Nottingham hit too. 

The outage came just 48 hours after both HSBC and NatWest also suffered problems with their online banking systems.

On Monday morning, HSBC customers were unable to access the huntington national bank inc accounts for around two hours before the problem affecting HSBCnet was resolved.

A few hours later NatWest also experienced issues, with its barclays mobile banking down struggling to log into their accounts via online and mobile banking.

Both banks apologised for the disruption when the problems were fixed but neither revealed the cause of their respective outage.

Barclays app fixed as bank apologises to customers for outages this morning

They had reportedly fixed issues with their telephone and online banking that had experienced outages for around 6 am this morning, according to the Down Detector.

Customers took to Twitter to report the outages and express their frustration.


One user wrote: "App not working for me either, no bank accounts showing, just Barclaycard.

"Chat says 17 mins to speak to someone!! I guess I can pop to my local branch to sort out a transfer&hellip.oh hang on, you closed it.

While another customer said: "Nothing is working on the app.

"Your website says everything is fine and you acknowledge the problem on Twitter. Seems you need to get your ducks in a row!!"

The bank has now reassured customers via its Service Staus page that their apps are operating again as normal.

On the Service Status page, the bank wrote: "Our app is now working – sorry it took us some time to fix the issue.

"If you’re still having issues – please tap home once you’ve logged in to the app and you’ll be able to see your accounts as normal.



Thousands of websites including Amazon, UPS, HSBC, BA, Airbnb and HBO hit in major global outage

A major server outage brought down thousands of websites across the UK, US and around the world, including HSBC, Barclays, American Express, Delta Airlines, Tesco Bank, alongside the PlayStation Network, Airbnb and Waitrose, as well as ITV and TSB.

British Airways was also down. A message on the BA website read: “Service Unavailable – DNS failure. The server is temporarily unable to service your request. Please try again later.”

Also down were Amazon, UPS, FedEx, HBO and several 911 emergency services across the U.S.

What appeared to be a server outage was fixed within about 25 mins as provider Barclays mobile banking down stated barclays mobile banking down have implemented “a fix for this issue.”

Internet users trying to reach some sites receive so-called DNS errors, meaning their requests could not reach the URLs requested.

Internet outage monitoring platform DownDetector is reporting thousands of problems from its users across dozens of hugely popular sites. The cause of the problem is not yet clear.

Several internet services are down due to a major DNS site outage.

Some of these include Steam, PSN, Xbox Live, and more.

Emergency issue

Akamai, a content distribution network, or CDN, which helps data move around the internet, said on its website it’s investigating “an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service.”

The company said it expects to provide an update on its service disruption around 6pm London time.

Oracle, a cloud service provider, said moments ago it is “monitoring a global issue related to Akamai edge DNS that is impacting access to many internet resources, including Oracle cloud properties.”

If you’ve been on the fence about doing your banking online or through a mobile app, now is a good time to get started as financial institutions change their branch hours during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online and mobile banking allow you to handle your finances from the comfort of home.

Begin online banking with a few steps

As long as you have a computer or smartphone with access to the Internet and an account with a bank or credit union account eligible for internet banking, it’s easy to get started.

  1. Gather your account numbers

    Your account numbers should be on your paper statement. Your account number will also be on the bottom of your checks or deposit slips. They are needed to enroll your account.

  2. Find your bank or credit union’s website

    Look on one of your paper statements or on the back of your debit or credit card to find the website, rather than googling or clicking on links in an email or text.   • There’s a good chance your financial institution offers a way to send money person to person, too. Before you use any mobile payment services, check out our best practices guide to make sure your transactions are done safely. You can test it out by transferring a small amount, like a dollar, back and forth. That way you’ll be sure your money goes where you want and you receive money you’re owed.
  • Instead of writing checks and mailing them, you can pay most bills online or through the mobile app for your financial institution.
  • Banking online or through your mobile device is secure, as long as you follow best practices for keeping the information on your mobile device safe. Your financial institution may offer additional services to help you keep your account safe, including turning off your debit card if you suspect fraud. Check with your bank or credit union to learn more about additional protections they may offer.

How do I get help with online banking?

If you run into any issues, ask for help! If you need specific guidance, contact your bank or credit union directly. Customer service associates are available by phone, online chat, or video in some cases. The financial institution staff will help you set up your account and answer questions. They will also help you figure out what you can and cannot do online or through their app. Please note that during this pandemic crisis, many bank and credit union call centers are experiencing high call volumes and may be delayed in responding to inquiries.

Helping someone else bank

If you are a financial caregiver, either in a traditional formal role of managing someone else’s money or on an informal basis, speak with the person you’re helping and their financial institution to determine what you can and cannot do. Keep in mind that even during the current national health emergency, you’ll have to follow all of the required steps to have access to another person’s account. That could include having documents prepared, notarized, or other more formal steps – and it could take some time due to the large volume of consumer inquiries financial institutions are receiving. Some banks and credit unions offer “view-only” online banking, which lets you see what’s going on without having access to the money. If you are a fiduciary, you may be able to gain online access to accounts and help manage money while observing social distancing or quarantine practices.

If you do need to bank in person, call or visit your bank or credit union’s website to see if your branch is closed, offering special hours for older customers or members, offering services in person by appointment, or serving customers through the drive-thru windows only.

Barclays internet banking restored after technical problem

Millions of Barclays customers were unable to access their accounts online for several hours after the bank became the latest high street lender to suffer a technical glitch.

The problems emerged at 10.45am on Thursday and continued into the afternoon, although at just after 5pm the bank said normal service had resumed.

The bank’s website was not allowing customers to log in. However, a spokesman said the mobile banking service was allowing people to carry out transactions and that ATMs were working.

Angry customers were quick to complain. Steven Hyde tweeted: “@barclays I cannot access online banking with your current problems and need to pay a bill. Can I use my my debit card to pay or is this also affected?”

Another customer tweeted: “@BarclaysUK Pensioners are going without food … some of us can’t pay our rent … because of no access to our Barclays accounts. Corporate banking has ruined Barclays. How do you intend to compensate yr customers? When will the system be up barclays mobile banking down running? The only bank where it happens.”

Later the bank put a statement on its website saying: “We’re sorry if you’re unable to access online banking, telephone banking, or use some parts of our app. You can still check your balance and use most features barclays mobile banking down the app.” It added: “Our teams are working to fix the problem … Thanks for your patience.”

At shortly after 5pm the bank said the glitch had been resolved. It added: “We’re very sorry about the technical problems our customers have experienced today. Everything is now back up and running and we’re really grateful for customers bearing with us.”

TSB is still recovering from an IT disaster in April, when customers were left without access to online banking services for several weeks. The bank has 1.9 million digital banking customers.

Customers went on social media to express their annoyance, with many saying their accounts had disappeared entirely.
