If and when you say you launched an ad, but really just put some money behind a post on your page, you did not really launch a Facebook ad. Personal account users, conversely, have the well-known Facebook capabilities such as creating and sharing a profile, having friends and viewing other profiles and Facebook Pages.

Abilities of Business Account Users

Business account users have the ability to view and edit all Pages and Ads that were created with that account. Marketing a business on Facebook requires a “Business Page.” It’s actually against Facebook’s Term of Service to have a personal profile for a business, so don’t make the mistake of using a Personal Profile for a business. You wouldn’t want to do that anyway because Personal Profiles don’t have the benefit of Facebook ads, which you’ll definitely need in order to promote posts and drive website visits and conversions.

You will however, need a Personal Profile in order to act as Admin on your Business Page. All Facebook Business Pages are run through personal accounts and this is confusing for beginners.

It’s best to create an “administrative” Facebook personal account to administrate your Business Page. Why? Because I’ve seen too often where business owners have left the social media up to someone, that person is no longer working for them, and then they’re unable access their own page.

Pro Tip: When creating a personal account with which to run your Business Page, always use an email address with your company’s domain name. This gives you complete control over your page and who has access to it. Once you’ve got your Business Page created, then add trusted users as Admins on the page (you can change or delete them anytime).

Facebook For Salespeople and Entrepreneurs

For a salesperson or entrepreneur, the answer to “Do I need a separate Facebook Page for business?” is more complex. It’s mega-important to identify what you feel comfortable with. Social media should be a positive experience for you. If it isn’t, it will show in how you connect and engage.

Here are a few scenarios to help determine IF you need a separate Facebook Page for business:

Fill in all your contact information and remember to put your work contact info, not your personal info. That way, you can make your Profile public without worrying about your personal data. When your Profile is public, you’ll be found by customers and prospects.

This option is for the more advanced user who should have her/his Personal Branding in place, along with a website that includes helpful content and specific sales funnels.

You’ll need a budget for Facebook ads. If you’re new, don’t spend more than $5/day to start and test, test, test. You’d be surprised at what you can do with $150-200/month in Facebook ads. But walk before you run. It’s a complicated platform and it can take a long time to get it right.

Facebook for Non-Profits

Facebook is at its BEST when non-profits such as animal rescue utilize it to spread awareness, foster volunteers and ask for donations. I’m on the board of a horse rescue and I have repeatedly witnessed the power of Facebook to save lives.

If your non-profit is just you, and you’re a novice, please choose the Personal Profile (Account) option rather than creating a Business Page. For the same reasons stated above, you can get more traction within your “friends” network and slowly build up to a point where you can either convert your profile to a Business Page or create a new whole new Page.

For non-profits that are more advanced, a Business Page is the right choice. I just completed a Facebook fundraiser for the horse rescue I volunteer for. Besides going out every weekend to help care for the horses, I do all the marketing “in my spare time.” 😉 We hold three Facebook fundraisers per year and I manage them.

I started latest fundraiser on the 3rd of the month and we hit our goal on the 22nd day of the month. Our page, Hanaeleh, has 73,000+ fans and the results are pretty awesome. After spending $300 in Facebook ads to promote posts, we raised $10,000!

Now you have to choose a category. Facebook allows you to choose up to three. You add them manually. Write down those most fitting for your business – this will make your page easier to find by your audience.

Now we can proceed to the design side of things.

Facebook Page Design

Your Facebook business page design is more important than most people realize. It’s going to be the “face” your brand shows to every Facebook user. It needs to be catchy and engaging to attract your audience.

Let’s start with the profile photo.

Facebook will let you upload a photo from your computer to use as a profile picture.

As of 2019, the perfect profile photo size for Facebook is 360 x 360 pixels. The minimum size is 180 x 180 pixels. Don’t opt for a smaller picture, as it will ruin the quality.

Using your logo for profile pic works best. If you don’t want to use the logo itself, make sure it’s present somewhere in the picture. Your logo is the first thing people see when you market your business and easily the most distinguishable part of it.

Just think of Coca-Cola, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Its logo, of course, which by the way is the most recognizable logo in the world.  

4. Choosing your cover photo

The next step after you’ve chosen your profile photo is choosing a cover photo.

The dimensions for a cover photo are 820 pixels in width x 312 pixels in height. It’s important to note that those are the dimensions for desktop. For mobile, cover photos should be 640 pixels wide x 360 pixels tall.

Make sure your cover photo is relevant to your business. Using your brand colors is recommended. Another good idea is to align the objects in your cover photo to the right. That way you’re drawing attention to your call-to-action button. It also balances out the design of your Facebook business page (as they aren’t the same as personal profiles).

If you don’t have a graphic designer to help you, don’t despair! Online design software such as Visme, Canva, BeFunky, and Fotor is of great help. They have templates with the necessary dimensions, as well as a lot of fun and easy ways to edit or create graphics.

5. Templates and Tabs

The Facebook page template determines how your page is going to look.

Click on Settings, which you’ll find in the upper right corner of your page. Then, choose “Templates and tabs” from the menu on the left.

This option lets you configure the different sections of your page. To make it easier for you, it has templates for different types of businesses.

Click on the Edit button next to Current template and choose one of the following:

After you’ve made sure your Facebook page looks attractive enough, it’s time to fill out the information for it.

6. Complete your page information

Click on Settings. Then, go to Page Info.

Adding this information is vital for your Facebook company page. It’s what people will mostly look for. It applies for websites, so don’t think it won’t apply for your Facebook business page as well.

Add an active phone number, which they can dial directly from your page. If your business has a physical office, store or cafe/restaurant/etc, add the address too. An official email address is also important. Basically, add any means of information your present and future clients might need to contact you.

Be mindful of the description of your page. You don’t want it to be too long. Keeping it within the word limit – 155 characters – works best. Be precise and accurate. People don’t like unnecessary ramblings.

7. Add a call-to-action button

Facebook has a customizable button as an option for your page. It is located in the upper right corner, next to the Like, Share and Follow buttons.

Once you click on Add a Button, it opens a pop-up page with options.

You can choose from 5 categories:

  • Book
  • Contact
  • Learn More
  • Shop
  • Download

Each of them has subcategories with options. Most of those need you to fill out the full information about your page, so don’t skip steps!

Sorting out the Page Roles

The time has come to discuss page roles.

You don’t need to do everything on your own. We live in a very hectic age and any form of help is appreciated. Thankfully, Facebook’s got your back. Managing a Facebook business page will be easier if you have a team to help you.

8. Assign page roles

Again, click on Settings. Once the page has loaded, choose Page roles.

Let’s talk about what roles can you choose from. We have:

  • Admin – the one that has complete control over the page. By default, that’s the person that created the page.
  • Editor – can edit the page, create posts and ads, and answer messages. They can also see who created a post or comment, post from Instagram to Facebook, and view insights.
  • Moderator – can send messages, respond to and delete comments, create ads, see who created a post or comment, and view insights.
  • Advertiser – as suggested by the name, the advertiser can create ads, see who has created a post, or written a comment and view insights.
  • Analyst – they have the most limited access, they can only see which admin created a post or wrote a comment and view Insights for the page.

Depending on how much work there needs to be done, you can create a small team and manage the page together.

Okay. So you did create a Facebook business page. You filled out the information needed, took care of the design, and assigned roles to your team.

It is time to create your first post!

9. Creating your first post

WordPress’s default first post is “Hello, world!” Facebook gives you a bit more freedom.

You can start by writing a status update, publishing a link, photo, or video at the best time possible.

It’s best if you create 3 to 5 posts before promoting your page.

Think about it. Would you follow and like an empty page or one with just one status, saying “Hi!”?

No, you won’t. You wouldn’t share it with your friends, either.

People are visual creatures. If you’re not sure what to share – go with either a photo or a video. Users will very rarely read a block of text that doesn’t have any images. And videos are the clear winner in the marketing world.

Once you have your posts ready, you can share your page with your friends. The more friend referrals your company page gets, the more profit you’ll turn. Statistics show that 92% of people would buy something upon referral from people they know. 

10. Promoting your page

Facebook would prompt you to invite friends to like your page in the very beginning.

However, I really don’t recommend doing this right away. This is why I put this step as the final one.

If you start promoting your page before you followed all of the steps listed above, chances are you’ll get nowhere. Maybe you’ll get a like or two from your closest friends or family members.

But that’s not what we’re aiming at here, is it?

So take care of all the details, the design, and the content first. If we’re doing marketing, we have to have something to advertise.

After you do that, you can invite your Facebook friends to like your page. Of course, we’re aiming high. The idea is to reach people that are not on your friend list.

How?

Well, there are a few ways to do this.

The first and simplest one is to ask your friends to share your page with their friends and hope for the best.

However, I don’t believe in just hoping for the best. I believe in action. Given that you’ve read so far, so do you.

If you have a newsletter, make sure to link to your new Facebook page. Chances are, if people have already subscribed to your newsletter, they’ll like your page too.

If you have a website, add a Facebook plugin there. You can mention your Facebook page name in the bio of every other business-related social media account that you have.

I also recommend using Facebook’s Page likes ads. Go to your Facebook page, and click on Promote.

You have absolute freedom to customize the way the ad looks.

Choose an image and text to be displayed. After that, choose your audience.

Choose your ad budget and ad duration wisely. A wider target audience means a bigger budget and generally – somewhat lower conversion rate than with more narrowly-defined audiences. Longer duration means more money spent – usually reserved for audiences that are proven to convert into clients well. Think things through before estimating a daily budget.

After you finish adding up the necessary info, click “Promote.”

Here are just 5 of them:

1. You are breaking the rules
You may have set up a personal Facebook profile using the name of your business or your business branding. If you also have another Facebook page for your own personal use, we’re afraid you’re in contravention of Facebook rules and one or both accounts could be suspended. Section 4 of Facebook’s terms clearly states that you shouldn’t have two separate Facebook accounts and you should never use a personal Facebook profile for commercial gain. We’ve seen businesses have their accounts suspended altogether over this malpractice.

2. Your business won’t be seen
Facebook business pages can be optimised for search engines like Google, but personal Facebook profiles cannot. Surely you would like as many potential customers as possible to find your company online wouldn’t you? Using a personal page to promote your company is hindering your chances.

3. No-one will ‘Like’ your business
It will be much more difficult to gain ‘friends’ as a business if you’re using a personal Facebook profile because regardless of privacy settings (which confuse most Facebook users anyway), people will be reluctant to share personal information with a company – no matter how good that company is. A Facebook business page allows people to ‘Like’ your company without any privacy risks because your company cannot access their personal information.

4. Your business could run out of Friends
Although it’s not easy to verify, many commentators say that Facebook will only allow a personal profile a maximum of 5,000 friends. But your Facebook business page can be ‘Liked’ by a limitless number of people. Why limit your opportunities?

5. Your business will be one dimensional
Whilst you can only have ONE personal Facebook profile (if you’re obeying the rules) you can create more than one Facebook business page. So if your company has several sub-brands or specialities, you could consider creating a dedicated Facebook business page for those too.

Convinced? And there’s more where that all came from.

It’s not rocket science. Facebook personal profiles are for people and Facebook business pages are for businesses. Of course you can still reflect your business in your personal Facebook updates, but it’s simply not designed to enable a company to maximise the many benefits that social media offers today.

Facebook Ads Manager vs Business Manager: What’s the Difference?

Many businesses and agencies that offer social media management as a service love the fact that all business profiles and ad accounts can be stored in one place (insert praise hands). Did you know, though, that there is a pretty major difference between Facebook ads manager and business manager? The wonderful world of Facebook can get confusing for some, so we thought we’d cover these two types of accounts within the platform that we utilize the most. Let’s dig in.

Ads Manager

Facebook ads manager is strictly for managing and creating ad campaigns. When you’re in the ads manager, you can select which individual ad account you’d like to view under your profile or your agency’s profile depending on who owns the ad account. For example, if your agency is an ad account owner, you can add business profiles under that account and create their own ad account under your agency’s.  In ads manager, you can also check out ad campaign reports, which are super handy when you’re discussing ad performance with your clients.

There are two types of general “ads,” within Facebook, though. There are actual Facebook ads and boosted posts. Facebook ads manager is, in fact, different than just boosting a post that is already on your Facebook feed. If and when you say you launched an ad, but really just put some money behind a post on your page, you did not really launch a Facebook ad. You can still target your audience with these boosted posts, however, you can not see a report nor can you choose an objective (brand awareness, video views, page likes, etc) with these types of promotions. The sole objective of these types of posts is visibility and engagement with that post. If you’d like to see how specific you can target an audience with regular Facebook ads, check this out.

One other nice thing about Facebook ads manager is that you can filter ads by objective, demographic of the audience, and ad delivery (whether the ad is active, complete, recently complete, etc). If you want to compare how different ads performed, this feature certainly comes in handy!

Business Manager

Facebook’s business manager saves us a lot of time, which is nice. We use it to manage business pages, manage who is an admin on those pages and can even manage ad accounts. We look at it as the hub of all Facebook management. You can request access to existing pages or ad accounts if you don’t already have access. Plus, you can customize employee’s access levels for ad accounts. There are three assets that someone can be assigned to in the business (ads) manager. Those are ad account analyst (can only see ads), ad account advertiser (can edit and manage ads), and ad account admin (can manage all aspects of campaigns). If you don’t have an ad account or business page created, you can create them in business manager, too. In business manager, you can edit permissions for the people you have set up in your account. You can see below all of the categories you can edit.

One other nice thing about business manager is that you can be assured that your accounts are secure, plus you don’t have to friend your colleagues on Facebook before adding them as an admin (even though we love being friends with our colleagues).

For business pages, you can assign your team different accounts, edit his or her permissions, such as page admin, editor, analyst, live contributor, moderator, and advertiser. Perhaps you only want or need someone to see specific information; this is key for this reason!

How to change admin on a Facebook page

As your business evolves, the roles on the Facebook business page change. You may need to add or change an administrator to a Facebook business page.

Only current admins of a Facebook page can delegate roles – they can set limited or unlimited capabilities.

There are five different page roles for Facebook business pages:

  • Admin
    An admin can manage all aspects of the page, including sending messages and posting as the page, creating adverts, seeing which admin created a post or comment, viewing insights and assigning page roles.
  • Editor
    An editor can edit the page, send messages and post as the page, create adverts, see which admin created a post or comment, and view insights.
  • Moderator
    A moderator can respond to and delete comments on the page, send messages as the page, see which admin created a post or comment, create adverts and view insights.
  • Advertiser
    An advertiser can see which admin created a post or comment, create adverts and view insights.
  • Analyst
    An analyst can see which admin created a post or comment and view insights.

Fans of the page cannot to see who is in which role.

Adding roles on a Facebook page

Adding an additional person as an admin to a Facebook business page is an easy task.

Once you have added the new administrator be aware. The new admin can change or delete roles. This is one way to completely change the administrator of a page.

An ‘Editor’ or anyone with lesser capabilities can’t delete the admins.

Things to know before adding an administrator:

  • Only an admin of a page can assign roles to Facebook users that LIKE the page.
  • Usually, they are added via their Facebook username so it is useful to know what the person’s profile picture is.
  • Sometimes the user will not appear in the ‘add list’ – try entering their login email address instead.
  • The new role must be accepted through an invitation (seen below). Facebook will notify the user of their new post via a notification.

The invitee needs to click the Accept button to accept the page role.

Adding a person as a Facebook administrator, desktop

The instructions here will help you to add an admin using a desktop computer. Scroll further to use the Facebook Pages Manager app on a mobile.

First, log into Facebook, then go to the Facebook page.

Add an administrator to a Facebook page - via the SETTINGS

An admin of the page will see a ‘Tools’ menu on the left hand side of the page. The Page settings link is at the bottom of the menu.

Edit page roles - click Page roles within the settings.

Then click Page Roles on the left hand side.

Add an admin by typing their email address or Facebook username into the box labelled ‘Assign a new Page role’.

Facebook now allows you to assign a role to anyone with a Facebook account. They just have to accept the invitation, of course.

Choose a role from the menu to the right of the name field, then click Add.

You’ll be asked to enter a Facebook password to confirm the changes.

To switch the admin on the Facebook page from one person to another the current admin needs to add an admin.

The new admin must accept the invitation to the role via a Facebook notification.

The new admin should then go to the Page settings (as above) and delete the obsolete admin.

Scroll to ‘Existing page roles‘. Assigned roles are listed here.

To remove a person from an existing role, click the Edit button that corresponds to their name. Hit Remove, then Confirm.

In the case that there is only one admin, you’ll not be able to delete them.

The current admin needs to add another admin first. There must always be at least one admin of a Facebook page.

Any of the other roles can be deleted freely.

Add a person as a Facebook administrator via mobile app

Facebook’s mobile app is now much better for managing Facebook pages and you can manage Facebook page roles easily within the app.

You might find that your version of the app is slightly different from how I explain things but I’ve got two ways for you to try.

Find a Facebook page on the mobile app – method 1

Log in to Facebook on the phone app.

The new Facebook has a FLAG icon at the top of the screen. This is the symbol for PAGES. Tap that.

Tap the page avatar (profile photo) you’d like to edit. Scroll the page icons left to right to see all pages.

Method 1 is my preferred method – although I know some people haven’t got the FLAG icon at the top of their Facebook app. If you want it there then press and hold any icon in that top bar (except the house and the bell), then click manage shortcut settings.

An alternative way to find your Facebook pages:

Find a Facebook page on the mobile app – method 2

  1. Log in to Facebook on the phone app.
  2. Notice the 3 vertical lines representing a menu at the top right. Tap that.
  3. You might see an avatar (profile photo) for a frequently visited page at the top – tap that to go to it. If not, scroll down.
  4. Look for a box with an orange FLAG icon labelled Pages.
  5. Tap the page avatar you’d like to edit. Scroll the page icons left to right to see all pages.

Now add an administrator

  1. Notice the cog at the top right of the page and tap that.
  2. Now tap Page roles.
  3. Tap Add Person to Page, at the top.
  4. You’ll be asked to re-enter your personal Facebook password.
  5. Type the name or email address of a Facebook user.
  6. Select them from the list. It’s useful to have an idea of what is on their profile photo.
  7. Once selected, you’ll see their profile photo and you can select which role you’d like them to take on. The selected role is highlighted with a blue tick.
  8. Tap Save at the bottom of the screen.

5. Scroll down and click Create Page

6. Next you can add images. Click Add Profile Picture or Add Cover Photo to upload photos from your device. Hit Save at the bottom.

7. A pop-up may appear asking if you want to connect your page to WhatsApp. If you want to, enter your phone number and click Send Code. If you don't want to, click the "X" icon in the top-right corner of the pop-up. 

8. Your new Facebook page is now created, and you can continue customizing it to your liking. 

Additional set-up tips 

Before you write your page's first post, be sure to update your page with additional information for your business.

1. Make a call to action

Add a call-to-action button to your business page by clicking Add a Button at the top-right of your page. Choose an action from the available options. You can have visitors book appointments, contact you through Facebook Messenger, download your app, and more.

2. Choose a page username

Choose a page username by clicking Create @username under your cover photo and page name. This username will become the web address for your business page (e.g. facebook.com/businessinsider).

3. Enter upcoming events

To add upcoming public events, click the Events tab at the top of your page and select Create New Event in the top-right of the Upcoming Events section.

Quick tip: Make it easy for your future fans to find information about your business's scheduled events. Fans of your page can show interest in your events by clicking a button to indicate their intention to attend.

4. Update the About section

To get to the About section, click the More tab at the top of your page, beneath your page name. In the More drop-down, select About. Here you can add a location, business hours, price range, contact information, and more.

5. Add page roles

In the sidebar menu on the left, click Settings, then click Page roles to assign roles to other coworkers or brand managers. 

In the Assign a new page role section, enter a name or email address into the textbox and in the drop-down menu on the right, select a role: admin, editor, moderator, advertiser, or analyst. Click Add when you're done.

6. Explore publishing tools

Facebook has built-in scheduling tools that allow you to plan and publish your posts according to a schedule of your choosing. These tools help you automate the process of posting updates. You can save draft versions of your posts here as well.

7. Convert a personal profile to a business page

If you have been using a personal Facebook profile for your business, you can convert it to a business page using Facebook's conversion wizard. 

While the process is called a conversion, it actually copies your personal profile to a page. Your personal profile will remain intact and a new page based on that profile will be created. You can update the newly created page as you would a page created from scratch.

8. Select page visibility

Facebook pages are published as soon as they are created. This means an incomplete page would be visible to the public as soon as it's created. 

If you would prefer to work on your page in private before making it available to the public, you can update its visibility from the page settings menu — click Settings at the bottom of the sidebar menu on the left, and on the General tab, click Page visibility to unpublish your page.

This will prevent the page from being available until you're ready to publish it again. Remember to update the visibility setting when you are ready to publish it.
