"Morning Sickness" Remedies That Really Work

Anyone who’s been huddled around a toilet bowl or felt a constant cloud of queasiness follow them around during pregnancy knows that having a baby on the way isn’t always celebrations and smiles.

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy — often referred to as “morning sickness” — is often an unexpected, uncomfortable, common reality of pregnancy. More than 70 percent of women report it, with symptoms peaking between weeks five and 12 of pregnancy. (It’s also worth noting that according to at least one study, only 1.8 percent of people reported morning-only symptoms of their nausea and vomiting in pregnancy — while 80 percent reported all-day nausea.)

Experts aren’t quite sure what causes the symptoms, but the best theory is that a rise in the hormones human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) — which pregnancy tests pick up on — and estrogen are at play. These hormones shoot up around the time people start experiencing symptoms, explains Tajh Ferguson, M.D., an ob-gyn at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. Genetics can also impact symptom severity and humans could even have an evolutionary adaptation to keep us from eating foods that may be poisonous in pregnancy, she says.

No matter the roots, if you’re in the throes of nausea and vomiting, you’re likely after one thing and one thing only: remedies.

That’s where these products, foods, medications, and lifestyle changes — often hailed as morning sickness remedies—  come in, providing relief with science to back them up.

Just remember: Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy usually pose no risk to you or your baby. But if symptoms are getting in the way of your day-to-day (say, you can’t work or care for other children), you can’t keep any food or fluids down, or you notice weight loss of about five percent of your body weight or more, call your doc. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a severe form of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (you may recall Amy Schumer was hospitalized for it) could be at play and you might need a more tailored plan to feel better.

Small, Frequent Meals

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends eating five or six “mini” meals a day instead of three larger ones to ensure that your stomach is never empty — something that could make your symptoms worse. Smaller meals are also usually more digestible, adds Dr. Ferguson.

Bland Foods

Your diet may have consisted of gourmet brunches, salads, and tapas pre-pregnancy but during pregnancy, bland foods (read: carbs) are usually the easiest to digest and go down a bit more easily. ACOG recommends following what’s known as the “BRATT diet” — bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, and tea. If those foods don’t sound good to you? Find something that does. Listening to your body is the key, says Dr. Ferguson.

Protein at Every Meal

Milk, nuts, seeds, nut butter, even protein powders can help keep you full all day long fending off uncomfortable symptoms of nausea. Try for even a little bit at every meal, ACOG suggests.

Staying Hydrated

Your body needs more water than usual during pregnancy (about eight to 12 cups a day)—  and that’s not just a health tip: *Not* keeping up with your fluids can also feed into nausea, ACOG notes. Keep a chilled water bottle with you to ensure you’re staying filled up. If you’re having a hard time with water, even ice chips can help you get a little bit of H20 here and there. But remember: If you’re not able to keep water down or notice symptoms of dehydration, be sure to call your healthcare provider.

Ginger Products

Experts aren’t 100% sure why ginger seems to ease the symptoms of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, but the plant has been widely accepted as a safe, all-natural way to keep many feeling well when morning sickness hits. Studies have shown it can increase the speed at which food moves through your GI tract, which could help with nausea, says Dr. Ferguson. Using real ginger — in a tea, for example — will give you a good, solid dose of the real stuff but if ginger candies or ginger ale are providing relief? Experts tend to agree that sticking with what works for you is important.

A Prenatal Vitamin

Bear with us... If you’re suffering from nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, pills don’t exactly always go down easily — and some people notice that their prenatal contributes to their nausea. But keeping up with vitamin and mineral needs in pregnancy is important and starting a prenatal a month or so before conceiving has actually been linked with less severe nausea and vomiting symptoms, says Dr. Ferguson — an association that could simply be the result of increased nutritional balance, she says.

Make sure your prenatal vitamin has vitamin B1 (thiamin), since levels can become depleted if you can't eat or keep down vitamin B1-rich foods and find one that works for you (chewable or swallowable).

Vitamin B6

It’s hard to say what exactly is behind the effectiveness of this go-to morning sickness elixir but B6 could have inherent anti-nausea properties — or the vitamin could, again, simply help keep you filled up on a healthy nutrient, playing a role in nutritional balance, says Dr. Ferguson. Experts tend to suggest starting with a 10- to 25-milligram dose if you’re feeling green, but talk to your provider about what’s best for you.

Doxylamine

You might know this antihistamine by its brand name Unisom. “It acts on areas of the brain responsible for nausea and vomiting to reduce nausea and vomiting,” says Dr. Ferguson. It’s particularly powerful when combined with vitamin B6 and tends to be a first-line morning sickness remedy (pregnancy safe, of course). An added bonus: It’ll help you sleep (because honestly, what’s worse than feeling nauseous while you’re trying to snooze?).

Prescription Medication

Back to this power play combo for a sec: You can take Doxylamine and vitamin B6 separately on their own or you could ask your doctor about a combined prescription form of the two if you feel like your symptoms are more serious (the medication Bonjesta is basically a high dose of the two). “If lifestyle modifications are not beneficial, we can escalate care to pharmacologic treatments,” says Dr. Ferguson. As with everything, just make sure to tell your doctor about any medications or supplements (even OTC ones) you’re taking during pregnancy.

Motion Sickness Bands

If motion sickness acupressure wrist bands have worked for you in the past, it may be worth trying them to keep the symptoms of pregnancy nausea at bay. The bands are said to stimulate the P6 (or Nei-Kuan) acupressure point, which is thought to relieve nausea and vomiting and Dr. Ferguson says her patients have had good results from them. Since the best remedies will vary from person to person, it’s worth giving it a shot.

OTC Motion Sickness Meds

Docs often suggest the use of common OTC medications such as Dramamine and Benadryl as a morning sickness remedy, too, says Dr. Ferguson. There are a number of remedies OB-GYNs typically recommend as being safe and effective for morning sickness. Talk to your doctor, though, before taking any medications, herbal remedies and vitamin supplements.

Ginger is an effective non-drug treatment for morning sickness and can be consumed in a number of forms, including capsules. It’s also found in ginger ale, lollipops, tea and lozenges (look for products made with real ginger instead of artificial ginger flavoring). Experts recommend taking one 250 milligram capsule every six hours, four times a day.

“The FDA [Food & Drug Administration] cites ginger on its substances generally recognized as safe [GRAS] list,” says Rachel Adams, M.D., a Baltimore-based OB-GYN and 2021 Forbes Health Advisory Board member. “When compared with placebo, ginger decreases frequency of nausea, but not vomiting.”

Crackers

Crackers are low-cost, taste good and are recommended to help ease morning sickness by the March of Dimes, an organization dedicated to the health of mothers and babies. Bland varieties in particular are typically tolerated best.

Try eating some in the morning before you get out of bed, suggests the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). It might also help to snack on crackers throughout the day, as well as nuts or fruit.

However, crackers can be high in salt, so keep an eye on your sodium intake. The daily recommended amount of sodium is 2,300 milligrams for healthy women. One Nabisco saltine cracker contains about 135 milligrams of sodium.

Acupressure Wrist Bands

You don’t have to swallow or drink this remedy—you simply wear it around your wrist. Touted for relieving sea-sickness, these wristbands have been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting among pregnant people. They work by gently stimulating an acupressure point on the inside of the wrist, which may ease nausea.

“Studies looked at [wearing an acupressure wristband] 10 minutes a day, four times daily,” says Dr. Adams. “Other times can be for two to three minutes, several times a day. Sea-Band is the brand commonly used in the studies.”

There’s no harm in trying an acupressure wristband. “Evidence [that wristbands alleviate morning sickness] is mixed,” says Keren Lerner, M.D., an OB-GYN at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. But they cause no adverse effects.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment based on ancient Chinese medicine that works to unblock energy pathways in the body called meridians. An acupuncturist inserts tiny thin needles into your skin at specific points to treat and prevent certain conditions.

An Australian study of women in early pregnancy found those who received acupuncture treatments for four weeks experienced less nausea and dry retching than women who didn’t receive acupuncture treatments. And acupuncture is safe, says Dr. Lerner.

“Many patients report improvement in symptoms, but that the improvement may be temporary until [the] next session,” she says.

Ask your healthcare provider to help you find an acupuncturist who is trained in working with pregnant people. Additionally, look for an acupuncturist with credentials—most states require a license, certification or registration to practice acupuncture, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Education, training standards and requirements for obtaining these depend on the state, but a license indicates the practitioner meets standards of knowledge and use of acupuncture.

Vitamin B6 and Doxylamine

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is safe and easy to find in pharmacies or grocery stores, and can help ease nausea and vomiting, according to ACOG.

“Prevention is key,” says Dr. Adams. “Starting B6 prior to onset of symptoms, and especially one month prior to pregnancy—in a prenatal vitamin—has been shown to decrease the incidence and severity of [nausea and vomiting] of pregnancy.”

Doxylamine, a medication found in over-the-counter sleep aids, can be added if vitamin B6 alone doesn’t help symptoms. It’s an antihistamine, meaning it blocks certain chemicals in the body that cause nausea.

Whether you take either by itself or both together, these two drugs are safe to take during pregnancy and have no harmful effects on the fetus, states ACOG. Your doctor can prescribe a drug that combines vitamin B6 and doxylamine.

If you’re taking B6 alone, take 10 to 25 milligrams every six to eight hours, says Dr. Adams, who adds that the maximum dose of vitamin B6 in pregnancy is 200 milligrams a day. “In combination with doxylamine is Diclegis [a prescription medication], which is 10 milligrams of B6 and 10 milligrams of doxylamine.” You can take this nightly, and may increase to up to four times daily, she says. Another form is Bonjesta, which contains 20 milligrams of B6 and 20 milligrams of doxylamine. You can take up to two tablets daily, she says.

Feeling nauseous? You're not alone. Morning sickness affects an estimated 75 percent of moms-to-be and can linger until week 16 of pregnancy (and for those who have a more severe form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum, even longer).

And chances are, you might not have realized until you became pregnant that morning sickness isn't exclusive to the morning. It can strike any time of day — and sometimes all day. 

There are ways to find relief, though. Below, moms in the What to Expect community share their best morning sickness home remedies that are worth trying.

Eat small meals throughout the day

Keeping meals frequent and small may help keep nausea at bay. "Try nibbling crackers all day in tiny portions," says What to Expect community member Jmoba. "Also have proteins and fats like nuts and cheese."

Other ideas: Snack on peanut butter, yogurt or chia pudding, or sip on smoothies made with yogurt to sneak in some extra protein.

Embrace ginger

"Ginger chews and ginger ale!" says What to Expect community member lguy. Many moms-to-be say ginger helps settle their stomachs, so try cooking with it, snacking on sweet ginger snacks or even just smelling fresh ginger (or ginger essential oils) for a little relief.

Go minty

"Try chewing some mint gum when you start to feel nauseous," says community user Monica0328. "It worked for me and some other girls I know." Like ginger, mint can be a soothing option. In addition to gum, you can try smelling some mint leaves or mint-scented oils, or sprinkling some mint leaves into your water bottle.

Stock up on Sea-Bands

These 1-inch bands are widely available at drug and health food stores and may ease nausea by putting pressure on an acupressure point in the inner wrist. "I'm nauseous all day, and so far, these have helped," says What to Expect user fazi6566.

Add lemon to your water

Citrus fruits like lemon, lime and orange have long been recommended for upset stomachs, and pregnancy is no exception. "If I drink water on an empty stomach I throw up," says What to Expect user Murran13. "I have been adding Minute Maid Lemonade Concentrate to mine — just enough so that I can handle it."

You can also add slices of citrus to your water and eat foods with high water content like watermelon and citrus fruits. 

Snack on some pickles

It might sound strange, but several moms-to-be in the What to Expect community swear by this trick: "Pickles! And the juice. I know it sounds completely opposite of what you want to eat when you're feeling nauseous, but they helped me so much!" One mom-to-be said even just the smell of pickles could give her some relief.

Try Pedialyte

Hydration is key, but if you're struggling to keep down water, many moms-to-be swear by Pedialyte. "Having a Pedialyte popsicle first thing in the morning has helped," says What to Expect user ahathaway173. "I get some hydration and electrolytes without actually drinking anything."

Turning them into popsicles is as easy pouring it into an ice tray or popsicle mold and freezing. The coolness of an ice pop is soothing and doesn’t require you to chew or sip to get hydrated. 

Consider the timing of your prenatal vitamin

Some moms-to-be find that taking their prenatal vitamin at a different time of day ("I noticed a HUGE difference when I switched to taking my prenatal vitamins right before bed," says user mrsjmscharer), taking it on a full stomach or asking their practitioner to recommend an alternate formula can help.

Make a batch of pregnancy popsicles

"I ate popsicles like they were being eradicated!" says What to Expect community member mrsjmschare. "I had popsicles morning, noon and night. It was the only thing I could keep down and really helped me."

This tip makes sense: Popsicles are sweet and hydrating, making them a perfect choice for nauseous moms-to-be. Look for store-bought brands (or make your own) that contain tummy soothers like ginger or mint.

Consider acupuncture

Some moms-to-be credit acupuncture with helping to ease morning sickness along with other pregnancy symptoms like heartburn and sciatica. "I started to feel better because I went to acupuntrue," says user virper. "I am really happy I did... it can be a good option."

In fact, some studies have shown that acupuncture that targets the wrist may help reduce nausea and vomiting associated with morning sickness (though other studies have not found the same effect).

Ask your doctor about supplements

If your morning sickness isn't responding to other remedies, your practitioner may recommend taking an additional vitamin B6 supplement or the antihistamine doxylamine (found in Unisom SleepTabs). "This has saved me and made it possible for me to work," says user laurakbon.

However, never test these supplements (or any other traditional or herbal medication for morning sickness) without first getting the green light from your doctor.

Talk to your doctor about medication

If you have severe symptoms and home remedies aren't helping, reach out to your practitioner for guidance. Your doctor may recommend a prescription drug such as Diclegis that's been approved by the FDA to treat nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Nausea is something most people are familiar with. It is never pleasant and can arise in a variety of situations, including pregnancy and travel.

Anti-nausea medications are commonly used to help relieve it. Unfortunately, such medications can have negative side effects of their own, including drowsiness.

Here are 17 home remedies that help you get rid of nausea without using medications.

1. Eat Ginger

Ginger is a popular natural remedy commonly used to treat nausea.

The way it works is not yet fully understood. However, experts believe that compounds in ginger may work in a similar way to anti-nausea medications (, ). In fact, several studies agree that ginger is effective at reducing nausea in various situations.

For instance, consuming ginger may be an effective way to reduce nausea during pregnancy (, , , ).

Ginger may also be effective at reducing the nausea people commonly experience after chemotherapy treatment or an operation (, , , ).

Some studies even report ginger to be as effective as some prescription medications, with fewer negative side effects (, ).

There is no consensus regarding the most effective dosage, but most of the studies above provided participants with 0.5 to 1.5 grams of dried ginger root per day.

Ginger use is safe for most people. However, you may need to limit your ginger intake if you’re prone to low blood pressure or low blood sugar, or if you’re taking blood thinners ().

Some experts also question the safety of eating dried ginger during pregnancy ().

While there are only a small number of studies on ginger, the ones performed on healthy pregnant women report a low risk of side effects. Thus, most experts consider ginger to be a safe, effective remedy during pregnancy (, , , ).

Summary:

A daily dose of ginger may be an effective alternative to anti-nausea medications in a variety of situations, including during pregnancy and after chemotherapy or an operation.

2. Peppermint Aromatherapy

Peppermint aromatherapy is another alternative likely to help reduce nausea.

One study assessed its effects in women who had just given birth by C-section.

Those exposed to a peppermint smell rated their level of nausea significantly lower than those given anti-nausea medications or a placebo ().

In another study, peppermint aromatherapy was effective at reducing nausea in 57% of cases ().

In a third study, using an inhaler containing peppermint oil at the onset of nausea reduced symptoms — within two minutes of treatment — in 44% of cases ().

Some propose that sipping on a cup of peppermint tea may have similar anti-nausea effects. Yet while you have little to lose by giving peppermint tea a try, there are currently no studies that confirm its effectiveness.

Peppermint oil taken in pill form has shown mixed results. Some studies show benefits, while others find no effects (18, ).

What’s more, little information exists on the safety of ingesting peppermint oil.

For this reason, more studies on peppermint pills are needed before strong conclusions can be made. However, smelling peppermint oil should be perfectly safe and seems to work in about half of people.

3. Try Acupuncture or Acupressure

Acupuncture and acupressure are two techniques commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat nausea and vomiting.

During acupuncture, thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body. Acupressure aims to stimulate the same points of the body, but uses pressure instead of needles to do so.

Both techniques stimulate nerve fibers, which transmit signals to the brain and spinal cord. These signals are thought to have the ability to decrease nausea (, ).

For instance, two recent reviews report that acupuncture and acupressure reduce the risk of developing nausea after an operation by 28–75% (, ).

What’s more, studies show that both forms are as effective as anti-nausea medications at reducing symptoms, with virtually no negative side effects ().

Similarly, two other reviews report that acupressure lowers the severity of nausea and the risk of developing it after chemotherapy (, 25).

There is also some evidence that acupuncture may reduce nausea during pregnancy, but more research is needed on this ().

Most studies that report a benefit stimulated the Neiguan acupuncture point, also known as the P6 or inner frontier gate point ().

You can stimulate this nerve on your own simply by placing your thumb 2–3 finger widths down from your inner wrist, between the two prominent tendons.

Once you’ve located it, press down with your thumb for about one minute before repeating the same procedure on your other arm. Repeat if needed.

4. Slice a Lemon

Citrusy smells, such as those from a freshly sliced lemon, may help reduce nausea in pregnant women.

In one study, a group of 100 pregnant women were instructed to inhale either lemon or almond essential oils as soon as they felt nausea.

At the end of the 4-day study, those in the lemon group rated their nausea up to 9% lower than those given the almond oil placebo ().

Slicing a lemon or simply scratching its peel may work in a similar way because it helps release its essential oils into the air. A vial of lemon essential oil may be a practical alternative to use when you’re away from home.

Summary:

Citrusy smells, whether from a freshly cut lemon or from store-bought essential oils, may help reduce pregnancy-related nausea.

5. Control Your Breathing

Taking slow, deep breaths can also help reduce nausea.

In one study, researchers attempted to determine which aromatherapy scent was most effective at reducing nausea following surgery.

They instructed participants to breathe in slowly through the nose and exhale through the mouth three times, while exposed to various scents ().

All participants, including those in the placebo group, reported a decrease in nausea. This made the researchers suspect that the controlled breathing may have provided the relief ().

In a second study, researchers confirmed that aromatherapy and controlled breathing both independently relieve nausea. In this study, the controlled breathing reduced it in 62% of cases ().

The breathing pattern used in this last study required participants to inhale through their nose to a count of three, hold their breath to a count of three, then exhale to a count of three ().

Summary:

Specific controlled breathing techniques are a free and effective home remedy for nausea.

6. Use Certain Spices

Several spices are popular home remedies often recommended to combat nausea.

Most of these spices are supported solely by anecdotal evidence. However, the nausea-fighting power of these three spices is backed by some scientific evidence:

  • Fennel powder: May reduce menstrual symptoms, including nausea, and help women experience shorter periods ().
  • Cinnamon: May reduce the severity of nausea that women experience during menstruation ().
  • Cumin extract: May help improve symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, constipation and diarrhea in individuals suffering from IBS ().

Although these three spices may help relieve nausea in certain individuals, very few studies exist and more are needed before strong conclusions can be drawn.

It’s also worth noting that the studies above used doses ranging from 180–420 mg per day. These mega-doses are difficult to achieve through normal, everyday use of these spices.

SUMMARY:

Certain spices may successfully reduce the frequency or severity of nausea. However, large doses may be required and more studies are needed to confirm these effects.

7. Try Relaxing Your Muscles

Relaxing your muscles may help relieve nausea.

One technique people have used to achieve this effect is known as progressive muscle relaxation (PMR). It requires individuals to tense and relax their muscles in a continuous sequence as a way to achieve physical and mental relaxation ().

One recent review found that PMR is an effective way to reduce the severity of nausea resulting from chemotherapy ().

Another way to relieve muscle tension is through massage.

In one study, a group of chemotherapy patients were given a 20-minute lower arm or lower leg massage during their treatment.

Compared to those given no massage, the massaged participants were about 24% less likely to get nauseous afterward ().

Summary:

Relaxing your muscles, whether through massage or PMR techniques, may help relieve nausea.

8. Take a Vitamin B6 Supplement

Vitamin B6 is increasingly recommended as an alternative treatment for pregnant women preferring to avoid anti-nausea medications.

Several studies report that supplements of vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, successfully reduce nausea during pregnancy (, , , ).

For this reason, several experts suggest taking vitamin B6 supplements during pregnancy as a first-line treatment against mild nausea (, 41).

Vitamin B6 doses up to 200 mg per day are generally considered safe during pregnancy and produce virtually no side effects. Therefore, this alternative therapy may be worth a try (41, ).

Nevertheless, there haven’t been very many studies on this topic, and some report no effects (, ).

For pregnant women who are experiencing nausea, vitamin B6 is a safe and potentially effective alternative to anti-nausea medications.

9–17. Additional Tips to Reduce Nausea

In addition to the tips above, a few other recommendations may decrease the likelihood of nausea or help relieve its symptoms. The most common include (44, 45):

  1. Avoid spicy or fatty foods: A blander diet made up of foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, crackers or baked potatoes may relieve nausea and decrease the likelihood of an upset stomach.
  2. Add protein to your meals: Protein-rich meals may fight off nausea better than meals high in fat or carbs ().
  3. Avoid large meals: Opting for smaller, more frequent meals when you’re feeling nauseated may help reduce your symptoms.
  4. Stay upright after you eat: Some people are more likely to experience reflux or become nauseous if they lie down within 30 to 60 minutes following a meal.
  5. Avoid drinking with meals: Drinking any liquids with meals may increase feelings of fullness, which may worsen nausea in some individuals.
  6. Stay hydrated: Dehydration can worsen nausea. If your nausea is accompanied by vomiting, replace your lost fluids with electrolyte-rich fluids such as flat mineral water, vegetable broth or a sports drink.
  7. Avoid strong smells: These may worsen nausea, especially during pregnancy.
  8. Avoid iron supplements: Pregnant women with normal iron levels should avoid taking iron supplements during the first trimester because they may worsen feelings of nausea ().
  9. Exercise: Aerobic exercise and yoga may be particularly helpful ways to reduce nausea in some individuals (, ).

It’s worth noting that most of these last tips are only supported by anecdotal evidence. That said, they pose little risk and may be worthy trying.

Morning sickness is nausea and vomiting that can occur at any time of the day during pregnancy.

Considerations

Morning sickness is very common. Most pregnant women have at least some nausea, and about one third have vomiting.

Morning sickness most often begins during the first month of pregnancy and continues through the 14th to 16th week (3rd or 4th month). Some women have nausea and vomiting through their entire pregnancy.

Morning sickness does not hurt the baby in any way unless you lose weight, such as with severe vomiting. Mild weight loss during the first trimester is not uncommon when women have moderate symptoms, and is not harmful to the baby.

The amount of morning sickness during one pregnancy does not predict how you will feel in future pregnancies.

Causes

The exact cause of morning sickness is unknown. It may be caused by hormone changes or lower blood sugar during early pregnancy. Emotional stress, fatigue, traveling, or some foods can make the problem worse. Nausea in pregnancy is more common and can be worse with twins or triplets.

Home Care

Try to keep a positive attitude. Remember that in most cases morning sickness stops after the first 3 or 4 months of pregnancy. To reduce nausea, try:

  • A few soda crackers or dry toast when you first wake up, even before you get out of bed in the morning.
  • A small snack at bedtime and when getting up to go to the bathroom at night.
  • Avoid large meals; instead, snack as often as every 1 to 2 hours during the day and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Eat foods high in protein and complex carbohydrates, such as peanut butter on apple slices or celery; nuts; cheese; crackers; milk; cottage cheese; and yogurt; avoid foods high in fat and salt, but low in nutrition.
  • Ginger products (proven effective against morning sickness) such as ginger tea, ginger candy, and ginger soda.

Here are some more tips:

  • Acupressure wrist bands or acupuncture may help. You can find these bands in drug, health food, and travel and boating stores. If you are thinking about trying acupuncture, talk to your doctor and look for an acupuncturist who is trained to work with pregnant women.
  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
  • Avoid taking medicines for morning sickness. If you do, ask a doctor first.
  • Keep air flowing through rooms to reduce odors.
  • When you feel nauseated, bland foods like gelatin, broth, ginger ale, and saltine crackers can soothe your stomach.
  • Take your prenatal vitamins at night. Increase vitamin B6 in your diet by eating whole grains, nuts, seeds, and peas and beans (legumes). Talk to your doctor about possibly taking vitamin B6 supplements. Doxylamine is another medicine that is sometimes prescribed and is known to be safe.

When to Contact a Medical Professional

Call your health care provider if:

  • Morning sickness does not improve, despite trying home remedies.
  • Nausea and vomiting continue beyond your 4th month of pregnancy. This happens to some women. In most cases this is normal, but you should have it checked out.
  • You vomit blood or material that looks like coffee grounds. (Call immediately.)
  • You vomit more than 3 times per day or you cannot keep food or liquid down.
  • Your urine appears to be concentrated and dark, or you urinate very infrequently.
  • You have excessive weight loss.

What to Expect at Your Office Visit

Your provider will do a physical examination, including a pelvic exam, and look for any signs of dehydration.

Your provider may ask the following questions:

  • Are you only nauseated or do you also vomit?
  • Does the nausea and vomiting occur every day?
  • Does it last throughout the day?
  • Can you keep down any food or fluid?
  • Have you been traveling?
  • Has your schedule changed?
  • Are you feeling stressed?
  • What foods have you been eating?
  • Do you smoke?
  • What have you done to try to feel better?
  • What other symptoms do you have -- headaches, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, dry mouth, excessive thirst, unintended weight loss?

Pregnancy often brings with it an excess of acid and bile in system, which leads to vomiting and nausea. If those flavors seem a little too sharp for you, try lemon balm. This citrus-flavored herb, which is a mint relative, is said to soothe nausea and headaches, while also providing a mild mood boost. For a sweetly floral touch, try chamomile or linden flower tea. Some women find that lemon banishes their symptoms. Squeeze a fresh lemon quarter into hot water throughout the day, as needed.

B6

A deficiency in vitamin B6 is suspected as a cause of morning sickness in some women. Consider taking a supplement of this vitamin. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists notes that the supplement is considered safe and natural, but check with your own doctor before you try it, as well advice as to how much you should take.

A Morning Cracker

The old wives’ tales are true: A few saltines, or other plain crackers, can help settle your stomach if you have them before getting out of bed. Dry toast helps too, but crackers are obviously more convenient items to keep by you at all times. They’re also helpful if you’re hung up in a meeting or running errands, and can’t get to a more balanced meal.

Acupuncture

A weekly session of acupuncture therapy can do wonders in some women, according to research conducted at an Australian maternity hospital. Acupuncture needles injected on the forearms and abdomen were found to be the most effective. Acupuncture is not always readily available or covered by insurance, but for women who are finding that morning sickness interferes with the quality of life, even just one treatment can make a big difference.

General Tips

Grease is the word — to avoid. Greasy and fatty foods aggravate nausea in many first-trimester women. Most women find bland foods the easiest to digest. Several smaller snacks during the course of the day are much better for combatting pregnancy nausea that a few heavy meals, or letting your stomach get empty. Drinking plenty of fluids also combats that empty stomach feeling, and just as importantly, stops you from getting dehydrated after vomiting. And never underestimate the power of fresh air to calm a whirling head. Even if you don’t feel up to a walk, simply opening a window may help alleviate mild morning sickness.

Acupressure Wrist Bands

You don’t have to swallow or drink this remedy—you simply wear it around your wrist. Touted for relieving sea-sickness, these wristbands have been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting among pregnant people. They work by gently stimulating an acupressure point on the inside of the wrist, which may ease nausea.

“Studies looked at [wearing an acupressure wristband] 10 minutes a day, four times daily,” says Dr. Adams. “Other times can be for two to three minutes, several times a day. Sea-Band is the brand commonly used in the studies.”

There’s no harm in trying an acupressure wristband. “Evidence [that wristbands alleviate morning sickness] is mixed,” says Keren Lerner, M.D., an OB-GYN at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. But they cause no adverse effects.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a treatment based on ancient Chinese medicine that works to unblock energy pathways in the body called meridians. An acupuncturist inserts tiny thin needles into your skin at specific points to treat and prevent certain conditions.

An Australian study of women in early pregnancy found those who received acupuncture treatments for four weeks experienced less nausea and dry retching than women who didn’t receive acupuncture treatments. And acupuncture is safe, says Dr. Lerner.

“Many patients report improvement in symptoms, but that the improvement may be temporary until [the] next session,” she says.

Ask your healthcare provider to help you find an acupuncturist who is trained in working with pregnant people. Additionally, look for an acupuncturist with credentials—most states require a license, certification or registration to practice acupuncture, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Education, training standards and requirements for obtaining these depend on the state, but a license indicates the practitioner meets standards of knowledge and use of acupuncture.

Vitamin B6 and Doxylamine

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is safe and easy to find in pharmacies or grocery stores, and can help ease nausea and vomiting, according to ACOG.

“Prevention is key,” says Dr. Adams. “Starting B6 prior to onset of symptoms, and especially one month prior to pregnancy—in a prenatal vitamin—has been shown to decrease the incidence and severity of [nausea and vomiting] of pregnancy.”

Doxylamine, a medication found in over-the-counter sleep aids, can be added if vitamin B6 alone doesn’t help symptoms. It’s an antihistamine, meaning it blocks certain chemicals in the body that cause nausea.

Whether you take either by itself or both together, these two drugs are safe to take during pregnancy and have no harmful effects on the fetus, states ACOG. Your doctor can prescribe a drug that combines vitamin B6 and doxylamine.

If you’re taking B6 alone, take 10 to 25 milligrams every six to eight hours, says Dr. Adams, who adds that the maximum dose of vitamin B6 in pregnancy is 200 milligrams a day. “In combination with doxylamine is Diclegis [a prescription medication], which is 10 milligrams of B6 and 10 milligrams of doxylamine.” You can take this nightly, and may increase to up to four times daily, she says. Another form is Bonjesta, which contains 20 milligrams of B6 and 20 milligrams of doxylamine. You can take up to two tablets daily, she says.

"Morning Sickness" Remedies That Really Work

Experts aren’t quite sure what causes the symptoms, but the best theory is that a rise in the hormones human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) — which pregnancy tests pick up on — and estrogen are at play. These hormones shoot up around the time people start experiencing symptoms, explains Tajh Ferguson, M.D., an ob-gyn at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. Genetics can also impact symptom severity and humans could even have an evolutionary adaptation to keep us from eating foods that may be poisonous in pregnancy, she says.

No matter the roots, if you’re in the throes of nausea and vomiting, you’re likely after one thing and one thing only: remedies.

That’s where these products, foods, medications, and lifestyle changes — often hailed as morning sickness remedies—  come in, providing relief with science to back them up.

Just remember: Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy usually pose no risk to you or your baby. But if symptoms are getting in the way of your day-to-day (say, you can’t work or care for other children), you can’t keep any food or fluids down, or you notice weight loss of about five percent of your body weight or more, call your doc. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a severe form of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (you may recall Amy Schumer was hospitalized for it) could be at play and you might need a more tailored plan to feel better.

Small, Frequent Meals

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends eating five or six “mini” meals a day instead of three larger ones to ensure that your stomach is never empty — something that could make your symptoms worse. Smaller meals are also usually more digestible, adds Dr. Ferguson.

Bland Foods

Your diet may have consisted of gourmet brunches, salads, and tapas pre-pregnancy but during pregnancy, bland foods (read: carbs) are usually the easiest to digest and go down a bit more easily. ACOG recommends following what’s known as the “BRATT diet” — bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, and tea. If those foods don’t sound good to you? Find something that does. Listening to your body is the key, says Dr. Ferguson.

Protein at Every Meal

Milk, nuts, seeds, nut butter, even protein powders can help keep you full all day long fending off uncomfortable symptoms of nausea. Try for even a little bit at every meal, ACOG suggests.

Staying Hydrated

Your body needs more water than usual during pregnancy (about eight to 12 cups a day)—  and that’s not just a health tip: *Not* keeping up with your fluids can also feed into nausea, ACOG notes. Keep a chilled water bottle with you to ensure you’re staying filled up. If you’re having a hard time with water, even ice chips can help you get a little bit of H20 here and there. But remember: If you’re not able to keep water down or notice symptoms of dehydration, be sure to call your healthcare provider.

Ginger Products

Experts aren’t 100% sure why ginger seems to ease the symptoms of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, but the plant has been widely accepted as a safe, all-natural way to keep many feeling well when morning sickness hits. Studies have shown it can increase the speed at which food moves through your GI tract, which could help with nausea, says Dr. Ferguson. Prescription Medication

15 Natural Morning Sickness Remedies for the First Trimester and Beyond

Nobody knows what causes morning sickness (or in some cases, all-frickin’-day sickness) and sadly there’s no one size fits all morning sickness remedy that works for everybody. Typically, this is when my grandmother would have chimed in to say “If men had this you know damn well they’d have it figured out by now.” True enough.

Either way, nearly three-quarters of pregnant women have morning sickness at some point during their pregnancy. The symptoms often show up in the first trimester thanks to a raging cocktail of pregnancy hormones coursing through your veins. It is more common in first pregnancies but can also happen in subsequent pregnancies.

The most common treatment for morning sickness is “suck it up, Buttercup” which is always nice advice to give along with eating leafy greens and deep breathing – easy for people to say when it isn’t them who's suffering from it.

It’s important to note that morning sickness is not hyperemesis gravidarum, which is like morning sickness on steroids. You can read more about that here.

Natural Morning Sickness Remedies:

Anything ginger

It sounds like this is the go-to herb to quell the barfs. Anything from ginger ale, ginger snaps, candied ginger to boiling fresh ginger in water with a bit of honey to make ginger tea. Sounds very hippyish which makes me think that last one might work. These ginger candies also got very high praise.

B6 (also called pyridoxine)

25 milligrams of vitamin B6 three times a day (a total of 75 milligrams per day) for three days is supposed to reduce nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy although they don’t know why.

Sour stuff

When life hands you lemons in the form of morning sickness, make lemonade? For a fresh take on morning sickness remedies, lemons squeezed in water and lemonade popsicles seem to help some people. Sour Patch Kids got a lot of votes from readers.

Don’t get hungry & eat often

Eat all the time to keep low blood sugar at bay. Even keep something like crackers on your bedside to nibble on before you get up in the morning. Have a snack every hour or two, keeping the servings small. I like this one. Gum chewing was up there on everyone’s list too. A few people recommended Pür gum if you’re trying to avoid aspartame and sugar.

Sniff stuff

Some people really respond to aromatherapy. This Happy Mama Spray from Earth Mama got great reviews (it’s also supposed to help lift your mood after the baby is born). Sniffing lemons was recommended a few places too, or you can find an essential oil that perks you up.

Take your prenatal vitamins with food to help them stay down

Even a cracker will do the home remedies for first trimester nausea. Taking them before you go to bed also helped lessen the barfs because you are sleeping when the queasy normally hits.

Avoid fried, fatty foods

Okay, they need to back the hell off with this one because they’re not even sure if it does anything which makes me think they’re just trying to get all preachy about what you should eat. That said, I’ve included it because it did come up a few times. Dumb.

Protein-rich snack before bed

This will help keep your blood sugar up during the night and might stave off a wave of 'ew' the next day.

Cider vinegar

Supposedly drinking 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon honey in cold water before bed is helpful. Personally, I think this would *make* me barf.

Increase the iron-rich foods in your diet

Foods such as beef, sardines, eggs, dried fruit and green leafy vegetables. There's also something called the Lucky Iron Fish that may help (and it's easy on your stomach).

The BRAT diet

Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and tea - bland foods that are easy on the tummy, but more than just saltines. Potatoes and pretzels also got a nod as bland foods that people could keep down. And if nothing of substance will do, there’s always broth.

Sucking on lollipops

I think this will also increase your street cred but I’m not sure. I sucked on Preggie Pops when I was pregnant and LOVED them. They have a touch of sour, but aren’t overwhelming.

Peppermint tea

Peppermint tea is supposed to help and, if nothing else, your barf will be minty fresh. This tea from Earth Mama is also really popular. It contains ginger root, spearmint, peppermint, chamomile and lemon balm, plus, it’s naturally caffeine free and organic. Drinking tea also helps increase your daily fluids, which can be hard when you’re feeling crummy.

Anise or fennel seeds

Chewing on these soothes upset stomachs, making them a go-to morning sickness remedy for those who can stomach their strong flavor. I imagine these would also get stuck in your teeth but, if it works, I guess it’s better than perpetual puking.

Still barfy?

Speak to your ob-gyn because there are both prescription and over the counter medications out there that can curb the pukes. Many people are reluctant to take medication because of the fear it will harm their baby – fair enough – but morning sickness can get pretty serious (dehydration is a big concern) which can also put your baby at risk, so weigh it out.

Here are just a few of the more popular medications prescribed for morning sickness:

Antihistamines – Many doctors will suggest trying an antihistamine to subdue nausea, but if you find you’d need to pop them like tic tacs, go back in to speak to your practitioner and have them step it up. Just because they are over-the-counter doesn’t mean they are safer than a prescription. Phenergan is a popular prescription antihistamine that is prescribed to pregnant people as well.

Diclegis (Diclectin in Canada) – This drug had previously been withdrawn from the U.S. market because it was suspected of causing birth defects. Turns out it was a false alarm and it has been reintroduced in 2013. It’s essentially a combination of B6 and an antihistamine and many doctors have already been prescribing that to their patients in a number of forms (mostly Unisom with allergy medication). It’s also been used safely for decades in other countries so this one sounds solid

While researching this post I found a lot of women using cannabis to control their morning sickness. It had never occurred to me, but I can see why that would make sense. Hey, I don’t judge, especially someone who’d been vomiting non-stop for nine months. Just be mindful that there isn’t a ton of research on its effects yet.

Zofran– This was (and is) a very popular drug used to curb morning sickness. It had been deemed safe for pregnancy by the FDA, however, new studies are now saying that odansetron (Zofran) may be a little iffy. Bring it up with your doctor if you are prescribed it.

Finally, there are quite a number of women whose only cure for morning sickness is giving birth, so just know that you’re not alone if nothing is working. Shit, I know. Hopefully, karma will reward you with an easy going baby, kind teenager, and a winning powerball ticket.

Suffering from morning (noon, and night) sickness? Feeling a bit queasy during the first part of your pregnancy is perfectly normal, thanks to high levels of hormones flooding your body. But when does morning sickness start, how long does it last and is there anything you can do to ease nausea?

We spoke to Miriam Erick, Dietitian and author of Managing Morning Sickness, about why morning sickness happens and how to survive this queasy time:

What is morning sickness?

Nausea and occasional vomiting is a common symptom of early pregnancy that affects up to nine out of 10 pregnant women. But don't be fooled by the name - morning sickness can affect you at any time of the day or night and some women feel sick all day long.

The good news is for most women morning sickness clears up by weeks 16-20 of your pregnancy, and it doesn't put you or your baby at any increased risk.

Morning sickness symptoms

Morning sickness symptoms can range from mild queasiness to severe nausea and vomiting. Feeling (and being) sick can be miserable, but provided you drink plenty of water and don't lose drastic amounts of weight, your health and the wellbeing of your baby should not be affected. There is no evidence that simple morning sickness will have a harmful effect on the baby.

Persistent morning sickness, even if mild, can understandably make you feel very down. You may find it difficult to concentrate at work or look after your family. Do you have hyperemesis gravidarum?

If you are experiencing severe morning sickness symptoms including extreme nausea, vomiting, dizziness, weight loss and dehydration, you could be suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. This is a rare pregnancy complication that affects 1-3 per cent of pregnant women.

In severe cases hyperemesis gravidarum can result in vomiting up to 50 times a day and hospital admission to combat dehydration may be required. If you have very severe sickness and struggle to keep liquids down, speak to your GP or midwife.

When does morning sickness start?

Morning sickness can strike at any time of day or night, not just the morning.

Most commonly morning sickness starts between the 4th and 7th week of pregnancy (during the first trimester) and usually settles by 12 to 14 weeks, but for some women home remedies for first trimester nausea may last longer.



Morning sickness causes

During pregnancy, your body produces a cocktail of hormones to make sure your baby gets what they need. 'While the cause of morning sickness is not known for certain, research points to hormonal changes experienced during pregnancy,' explains Erick.

'Dehydration and low levels of certain minerals lost even through mild vomiting – magnesium, potassium, sodium, and chloride – can also make pregnant women feel even more under the weather,' she adds.

It is not clear why some women suffer more than others. According to The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, morning sickness is more common for the following women:

  • If you have had morning sickness before during previous pregnancies.
  • If you are having a multiple pregnancy (twins or triplets).
  • More rarely in the cases of a condition called molar pregnancy where the baby does not develop and the placenta overgrows.

The good news is once the pregnancy is established the hormonal change settles and the nausea usually fades. If you become unwell and experience pain or vomiting later in your pregnancy (from around 10 weeks onwards) this may indicate other causes such as a kidney infection, appendicitis or gastroenteritis. Speak to your GP or midwife if you have any concerns.

                Ginger is a popular natural remedy commonly used to treat nausea.
