We easily go through two dozen eggs a week between Jordan and I. I tend to go through phases where I crave making them the same way over and over again until I’m sick of them and onto the next one.

Jammy eggs are SO easy to make!

And these jammy eggs have been on the rotation for weeks now. They take just 6 minutes to cook and a few minutes to cool after and they add the easiest protein and fat to any bowl or meal. You can toss them on top of a salad or bowl of pasta. Add them on a slice of sourdough with avocado – anything!

I make mine in some bone broth to add even more flavor and nutrients to the meal. Cooking with bone broth is one of the most underrated cooking hacks. It adds so much flavor to anything and you can easily substitute water with bone broth in any recipe or just add to the water like I do here.

I always keep Bonafide Provision’s Organic Bone Broth in my freezer (sold in freezer section!) and I either sip on it or cook with it. I love keeping the chicken, turkey and beef varieties on hand because they all have a different taste to them.

Instructions

It takes less than 5 minutes to make your eggs just right for scooping them gracefully from their shell with a spoon, or directly with warm toasted bread.

Best of all, all you need to make one of the easiest meals ever invented is: eggs, one pot, and some water.

It really doesn't get easier than this!

  • Place one or more eggs into a pot of lightly boiling water.
  • Let it gently simmer for a few minutes.
  • Remove them with a slotted spoon, and place them in cold water to cool them down, and BAAM, you're done!

The consistency is similar to poached eggs, with firm but soft egg whites and gooey yolk.

Serve with toasted bread or a colourful salad for a quick, nutritious meal that you can enjoy any time of the day.

Cooking time

I know from experience it can take a lot of wrong-guessing to reach the perfect result.

And that's why I decided to write these tips, so they can hopefully help you next time you want to give it a try.

So, the hunting question is, how long do you need to cook soft boiled eggs? Well, it's rather quick - the perfect soft boiled egg time is just 4 minutes. 

If you're looking for boiled eggs instead, 7 minutes is the perfect time in my opinion.

You can go for 8 minutes, but I wouldn't suggest more than that.

Tips for Perfect Eggs

  • Choose super fresh eggs, with a similar size to ensure they're cooked evenly. I personally like to go for the organic free-range ones whenever possible.
  • Use them at room temperature. If you store them in the fridge, take them out one hour before cooking.
  •  If you want to make sure they're cooked to perfection, use a timer instead of a clock. Because ultimately it's all about timing.
  • Poke a hole in the top of the eggs with a needle or egg-puncher before you start. This prevents them from cracking, but if you lower the heat to a light simmer when the water boils they shouldn't crack either.
  • Fill a pot with cold water and place it over high heat. Make sure you add enough water. I cover the eggs with enough water so that there is about 1 cm of water above them.
  • Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat slightly, plunge the eggs into it with a spoon and allow 4 minutes of cooking before taking them out of the hot water.
  • Add a dash of vinegar or lemon juice to prevent any spillage if by any chance the shell cracks.
  • If you prepare more than 2 eggs at once, allow a few more seconds of cooking time.
  • If you wish to prepare them ahead to enjoy later, keep them in a water bath at 60°C.

What are Soft Boiled Eggs?

Soft boiled eggs are made to where the egg whites are set yet the yolk is runny or jammy. Depending on how long you boil the eggs will depend on the outcome. For softer whites, cook the egg for less time. For less runny yolk and more of a jammy center, cook the egg for a little longer.

It all starts with eggs. First and foremost, it’s important to keep the eggs in the fridge. This is because you don’t want to over cook the yolks. Pulling them out ahead of time could throw off the cook times. Grab the eggs from the fridge right before you’re about to add them to the water. 

If making several at once, I try to pick eggs that are similar in size to ensure they come out with the same.

Start by filling a sauce pan with 1 to 2 inches of water (about 4 cups ish) and bring to a boil over high heat.

Once boiling quickly and carefully, lower the cold eggs (I like to use a slotted spoon) into the water.

Cover, keep the burner temp on high and set your timer. For a runny center, cook for 6 minutes. Cook for 6-1/2 to 7 minutes for a jammier and less runny egg.

Once the timer is up, use a slotted spoon to remove each egg and placing them into a colander.

Immediately rinse under cold water or submerge in ice water.

  • 1 medium free-range egg
  • 1 wholemeal bread slice
  • Small piece of softened butter, for spreading

Method

  1. Half-fill a small saucepan with water. Put on the hob over a medium heat and bring to the boil. Once boiling, gently lower the egg into the saucepan using a long-handled, slotted spoon. As soon as the water comes back to the boil, set the timer for 4 minutes. This will give you a lovely soft-boiled egg with a runny yolk, which is perfect for dipping your toast soldiers into. If you want the yolk to be slightly firmer, boil the egg for 5 minutes. If you want a hard-boiled egg with a firm yolk you will need to boil it for 7 minutes.
  2. When the egg is done, carefully lift it out of the pan with a slotted spoon. Put it into an egg cup.
  3. Pop the bread into the toaster and toast until golden brown. Put it on a chopping board and spread it with butter, then cut it into long strips to dip into the egg. Serve the egg with salt and pepper pots.

  1. Make sure your eggs are at room temperature before boiling. If they’re been in the fridge, take them out 30 minutes before cooking them.

Follow our quick video guide to how to soft boil or hard boil an egg. Always start with eggs that are at room temperature to best predict the cooking time and minimise cracking.

For a soft-boiled egg, lower the egg into gently boiling water with a slotted spoon. Allow three and a half minutes for a medium-sized egg and four minutes for a large egg. The yolk will be runny and the white just set. Cook for a further minute if you like your soft boiled eggs a little firmer.

For a hard-boiled egg, start the egg in cold water and bring up to the boil. Once the water is gently boiling, set the timer for between 7-10 minutes depending on how well cooked you like your eggs. The longer you boil the egg, the firmer it will be.

Once cooked, plunge the hard-boiled egg into plenty of cold water for one minute. Drain and cover with more cold water. This will prevent the egg from over-cooking in its residual heat. Cracking the shell with the back of a spoon during cooling will also make the egg easier to peel.

How to Boil, Peel and Crack Quail Eggs

So you’ve got a package of quail eggs on hand but aren’t quite sure what the best way to prepare them is.

Fear not! Quail eggs are a lot like other eggs. You’ll be able to boil, crack or peel them like a pro in no time. 

Just follow our steps below!

How to Boil Quail Eggs

Many of us know how to boil a standard chicken egg. But because quail eggs are smaller, cuter and a bit more fragile, they need to be boiled a bit differently.

Since quail eggs are so small, using a pan instead of a pot will make the water boil faster. Just make sure the eggs can be entirely covered by water!

We also recommend boiling room-temperature eggs as this will prevent them from cracking early! Just add them to a bowl of warm water for a few minutes before boiling.

  1. Place the pot or pan on a stovetop and heat on high, bringing the water to a rolling boil. Once boiling, add the quail eggs.

  2. Start your timer! Let the eggs boil for two minutes (soft-boiled), three minutes (medium-boiled) or three and a half minutes (hard-boiled).

  3. When the time is up, move the eggs to a bowl of cold water (we recommend adding some ice cubes). Dip a slotted spoon into the water and fish out each egg, placing each one into the bowl of water. They should cool off in a minute or two.

  4. Once they’re cool enough to handle with your bare hands, take them out and get peeling!

The cool water makes the shells come off a lot easier while you peel them. You’ll see in the next section!

How to Peel Quail Eggs

Peeling a quail egg is like peeling a chicken egg, but the quail egg’s size means it’s a touch more fragile and needs to be handled gently.

  1. Put down a paper towel to catch any eggshell pieces that fall as you peel the eggs.

  2. Take each egg out of the bowl of water where they’ve cooled. 

  3. Tap each egg on something hard to crack the shell.

  4. Gently roll each egg to crack the rest of its shell. Don’t apply too much pressure while rolling the egg or you’ll crush it! Just do it lightly.

  5. Get rid of the shell as well as the membrane around each egg.

  6. Enjoy!

If you soft-boiled your eggs, it’s best to enjoy them immediately with a pinch of salt. If you hard-boiled them, the peeled eggs can be stored in the refrigerator for 3–5 days.

Eat them as a snack, add them to salads, or chop them up for a fun take on egg salad. 

If you’d rather not boil them yourself, you can buy boiled and peeled Spring Creek eggs in brine at a range of grocery stores.

How to Crack Quail Eggs

Don’t try cracking quail eggs on the side of a bowl, like you would chicken eggs — this is because the membrane underneath the shell is thicker!

Instead, crack your quail eggs with a paring knife or serrated knife. You can also use a special quail egg scissor or cutting tool. 

  1. Grab an egg and hold it with the narrow side down. 

  2. With your chosen tool, cut the top of the eggshell, roughly a quarter of the way from the top. Keeping your fingers away from the blade, cut around the egg until the top part comes off. Be careful — the eggs can get slippery.

  3. With the top removed from the egg, simply turn the egg upside down and empty it into your pan or bowl! The white and yolk will come out together. (Tip: it’s best to crack all of the eggs you’re cooking at once!)

  4. Boil, fry, scramble, poach or blend and enjoy the goodness!

How to Cook a Perfect Soft-Boiled Egg

A soft-boiled egg is an egg that's cooked in its shell by immersing it in simmering water until the white is set but still soft and the yolk is still liquid. 

Cooking time for a soft-boiled egg is 3 to 4 minutes, and indeed many aficionados specify their desired doneness by referring to a "3-minute egg" or "4-minute egg." With the former, there may be a slight amount of unset white around the yolk, but with the latter, the white is fully set.

Cooking

To cook soft boiled eggs, you'll need a pot of water, a slotted spoon, and a colander. 

Technique A:

  1. Bring your water to a boil.
  2. Gently place the eggs in the water, and when the water comes back to a boil, lower it to a simmer.
  3. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Then remove with a slotted spoon, transfer to the colander, cool under cold running water to stop the cooking, and serve warm.

Technique B:

  1. Place the eggs in your empty pot and cover with cold water.
  2. Bring it to a boil, then lower to a simmer and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Remove and drain as described above.

Note that these cooking times assume that the eggs are at room temperature when they go into the water. If you cook your eggs straight from the fridge, you're going to need to cook them for more time:

  • 5 to 7 minutes using Technique A
  • or 3 to 5 minutes using Technique B

To get your eggs to room temperature, either let them sit on the counter for an hour or immerse them in warm water for 5 minutes.

Salmonella

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning, homes for heroes credit score it's present in poultry and eggs among other things. While it's easily killed through how long do you cook eggs for soft boiled cooking, a soft-boiled egg is considered "undercooked," which means there's a risk, albeit a very small one, of developing a foodborne illness from eating it.

How small? Per-capita, egg consumption in the United States is around 290 eggs per year, with about 1 in 20,000 eggs infected with salmonella. Thus, the average person can be expected to encounter a contaminated egg once every 69 years.

With that said, avoid uncooked and partially cooked eggs to be extremely safe. This goes particularly for children under 5, the elderly, pregnant women, and anyone with a compromised immune system.

To be 100 percent safe, use pasteurized eggs for your soft-boiled eggs (or any other egg preparations that produce a liquid yolk, like poached, over-easy, or sunny-side up eggs).

Don't Use the Microwave

 – full of nature’s most perfect form of protein.  At one time people were concerned about eating eggs because of the amount of cholesterol in the yolks.  Today, research has found that eggs also raise the good cholesterol that our bodies need.

Boiling an egg is really very simple!   I have read many different opinions about the best method for making perfect hard-cooked (boiled) eggs and have discovered, through my own personal testing, the following method which gives perfect results.

 

Coddling:

The method of coddling eggs will not toughen the whites as boiling does.  Coddling also makes an egg easier to peel. The cold water finish creates steam between the egg white and the shell which makes the shell easier to remove.

1.  For perfect cooking, start with eggs that do not have any visible cracks:

If you have 2 or 3 layers of eggs stacked up in a small pot, they may cook unevenly.  Use a large pan and limit cooking to two (2) dozen eggs at a time only.

 

5. Over high heat, bring water JUST to a rapid boil.

As soon as the water reaches a rapid boil, remove pan from heat and cover egg pan tightly with a lid.

A quick test to ensure that your eggs are hardboiled:  When eggs have cooled, spin them on a hard surface (just like you would spin a top).  If the eggs spins quickly without taking off or flying off in one direction, the egg is hard boiled and finished.  Undercooked eggs (or uncooked eggs) will have a wobbly and unsteady spin.


Storing of Hard-Cooked (Boiled) Eggs:

Refrigeration is necessary for hard boiled eggs if the eggs are not to be consumed within a few hours.

It is preferable not to peel your eggs until you are ready to eat or use in your recipe.  Hard-cooked eggs in the shell can be refrigerated up to one week.  Peeled hard boiled eggs can be stored in the refrigerator in a bowl of cold water to cover for about 1 week (change the water daily) – or in a sealed container without water (cover the eggs with damp paper towels) for the same length of time.

SAFETY NOTE:  It is not safe to leave hard boiled eggs (including those in their shells) out at room temperature for long.  If they have been taken to a picnic, or served on a buffet, keep them cool while they are being served, and discard any leftovers.

I leave the hard-cooked eggs in the pan they were cooked in and add cold water.

I then crack the eggs under water (this seems to help loosen the membrane under the shell).

Start peeling at the larger end, (the flat side) where the air pocket is, and remove the shell under running water to make the shelling easier.  You must get a hold of the membrane under the shell when you remove the shell.

Very fresh eggs are harder to peel.  The fresher the eggs, the more the shell membranes cling tenaciously to the shells.

I would like to pass on another trick with hard boiled eggs, the automatic hard boiled peeler machine (maybe you have already done this?).  I use the same pot that I boil the eggs in, empty the hot water, add cold water, rinse well to cool down, drain, put the lid on the pot, and gently shake the pot back and forth for about 20 to 30 seconds (as you would for popcorn).

Follow our quick video guide to how to soft boil or hard boil an egg. Always start with eggs that are at room temperature to best predict the cooking time and minimise cracking.

For a soft-boiled egg, lower the egg into gently boiling water with a slotted spoon. Allow three and a half minutes for a medium-sized egg and four minutes for a large egg. The yolk will be runny and the white just set. Cook for a further minute if you like your soft boiled eggs a little firmer.

For a hard-boiled egg, start the egg in cold water and bring up to the boil. Once the water is gently boiling, set the timer for between 7-10 minutes depending on how well cooked you like your eggs. The longer you boil the egg, the firmer it will be.
