Northern Calif.'s air is worst in the world, according to real-time air quality index

Choked by the smoke of multiple wildfires, Northern California had the worst air quality in the world Wednesday, according to a company that measures airborne particulate matter in real time.

A map used by Utah-based PurpleAir to track air quality globally showed an angry purple blotch over Santa Cruz County at 2:47 p.m. with an “emergency health warning” reading of 403.

PurpleAir’s air quality ratings do not necessarily parallel the Environmental Projection Agency’s Air Quality Index.

The company’s proprietary sensors use a laser particle counter to measure the number of airborne particles and then employ an algorithm to calculate a mass concentration based on the count. They differ from federal regulatory sensors, which measure particulate matter by drawing air through a filter and then weighing the filter.

The 403 reading came from a sensor at Love Creek in Santa Cruz County. Love Creek is near the edge of the evacuation area for the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties. CZU stands for Cal Fire's San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit.

Poor air-quality scores popped up throughout the South Bay, especially in San Jose and Santa Clara. In San Francisco, a sensor in the Castro District issued a “health alert” reading of 277 in the late afternoon.

It’s important to note that the readings spiking purple were temporary, and areas with high scores mostly ranged in the red “unhealthy” category when averaged over six hours. Since air quality can fluctuate greatly throughout the day, the real time PurpleAir AQI reading may appear "high" when compared to 24-hour averaged EPA AQI data.

Beijing, which is notorious for its chronically polluted air, posted readings in the 90s, the orange “moderate” category, on PurpleAir’s index Wednesday.

Breathing smoke from wildfires can harm your health.

There are several websites to find real-time information about air quality and smoke levels in your community. All of the sites use the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index, which ranks air pollution levels on a 0-500 scale, with green and yellow being the best, and red and purple the worst.

They are:

1) Purple Air – Founded in 2015, the site sells outdoor air monitors that measure dust, smoke, soot, and other particulates. The site tracks thousands of its sensors on a worldwide map, allowing anyone to enter a zip code, zoom in and see current air quality in their community, along with the trend there in recent days.   www.purpleair.com and Bay Area reports.

2) Air Now – This website, maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, provides similar real-time air pollution data. www.airnow.gov

3) Spare the Air – Operated by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, this site provides air pollution measurements in the nine-county Bay Area, along with a five-day forecast, information about commuter incentives and rules on wood-burning fireplaces. Information is at www.sparetheair.org or www.baaqmd.gov/about-air-quality/current-air-quality

4) Air Visual – A worldwide map of air quality sensors in big cities is here, although it’s not as extensive as Purple Air’s. But the site does show fascinating wind direction graphics and ranks which cities have the worst particulate pollution globally. www.airvisual.com/world-air-quality

5. Windy.com — See which direction the wind is blowing, along with other weather information, in a stylish format. www.windy.com

On all of these sites, make sure you are looking at readings for what’s called “PM 2.5.” That’s scientific jargon for “particulate matter that is 2.5 microns in size or smaller.” Those are microscopic, tiny bits of soot and dust: Each particle is less than one-tenth the width of a human hair.

Such tiny particles are unhealthy. They float in the air longer than heavier particles, and can embed deep in the lungs and even the blood stream when people breathe them. They are linked to asthma, bronchitis, heart attacks and other ailments when people are exposed for long periods of time, and they can be particularly harmful to children and the elderly.

Health experts, including officials at the Bay Area air district, recommend staying indoors as much as possible when levels on the Air Quality Index exceed 150. Other recommendations include setting vehicle air levels to “recirculate” to avoid pumping outside air into the vehicle while driving.

As firefighters battled to contain the historically deadly and destructive Camp Fire that has raged near Chico for the past week, the smoke that has blanketed the Bay Area thickened into a unhealthy haze that prompted air warnings, a run on filter masks and school shutdowns.

The National Weather Service on Thursday reported air quality in the Bay Area was “as bad or worse than any other time” since the Camp Fire began, based on satellite imagery and unofficial air quality sensors.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District said air quality levels across the Bay Area registered “unhealthy,” and extended its “Spare the Air Alert” through Tuesday, prohibiting wood burning. Air quality in Livermore, San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and Redwood City registered “very unhealthy.” The district advised people throughout the region to limit outdoor activity, as air quality reached levels equivalent to smoking half a dozen cigarettes during the day.

“Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about it,” said Natalie Dorrell as she hurried through the acrid air in downtown San Jose.

Many Bay Area colleges, including San Jose and San Francisco state universities,Cal State East Bay and Mills College, canceled classes for the week. School districts kept students indoors Thursday and many in the East Bay, including all of Alameda County along with San Jose’s private Presentation High, decided to close Friday. An annual parade Saturday in Brentwood was canceled.

Visibility fell below two miles in the East Bay and three miles in San Francisco, San Jose and the Peninsula, the Weather Service reported. In Walnut Creek, a usually prominent Mount Diablo was invisible behind the smoke.

It didn’t help that a 20-acre brush fire erupted Thursday east of San Ramon.

Across California, air pollution ranked among the world’s worst, with levels near Chico and Oroville far in excess Thursday of conditions in cities such as Delhi, India, notorious for its poor air quality.

An Ace Hardware store in Pleasant Hill had just a couple packages left of N95 masks, which are recommended to filter out most particulate matter. There were none on the shelves at the Home Depot in Campbell.

Hyun Gyu Park, who was at the San Jose-Diridon station on his way to UC Santa Cruz, where he’s a student, said it reminded him of the air in Korea, where he’s from, and he wondered whether he should be wearing a mask.

“I see a lot of people wearing gas masks,” Park, 23, said, “and I feel I should be doing the same thing, too.”

Air quality levels throughout the Bay Area were in the “unhealthy” range of 151 to 200 on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index, where prolonged exposure is considered harmful even to healthy people. Fine smoke particles can lodge deep in the lungs when inhaled, increasing the risk of asthma, heart attacks, bronchitis and other respiratory problems. The “very unhealthy” levels are between 201 and 300, and any outdoor activity should be avoided. Levels above 300 are deemed “hazardous.”

In Oroville and Chico, where unofficial air quality levels were around 500, breathing the air for 24 hours brought the equivalent health risk of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, according to a calculation done several years ago by Richard Muller, a professor emeritus of physics at UC Berkeley. The “very unhealthy” levels in parts of the Bay Area would be like smoking half a pack, and the “unhealthy” levels reported elsewhere would be like five or six cigarettes.

Walking in downtown Livermore for a quick errand, Maryann Martinez said the air made her “feel dirty.” She sat for a while in her car’s air conditioning just to get some air that felt clean.

Thursday had been expected to bring some smoke relief to the Bay Area. But the onshore winds that would have cleared the skies never came, National Weather Service Meteorologist Spencer Tangen said.

“We’ve got high pressure over us right now acting to compress the air and prevent the smoke from mixing up,” Tangen said. “It’s kind of getting trapped near the ground. We’re actually not expecting a lot of improvement in the next couple of days.”

Manoela Kruger of Fremont has been keeping her two children, Ellen, 7, and Ben, 5, cooped up inside the house as much as possible because the bad air really irritates her son.

“He is coughing a lot,” Kruger said. She usually limits the kids’ screen time, but after they made arts and craft projects, visited the library and went to the Dollar Store on Thursday, she bent the iPad rules because of the smoke.

“Today for the first time I’m actually considering having at least the kids wear masks,” she says. “It’s really bad out there, and unfortunately it just seems to be getting worse.”

VIDEO: Thursday weather and smoke forecast for the Bay Area

The National Weather Service is not predicting any significant improvement until next week, when a series of storms could bring much-needed rain to Northern California and help wash out pollution in the air.

“Luckily the models continue to show a good chance of rain starting on Wednesday and into Thanksgiving, and then hinting at a potentially stronger one on Friday,” Tangen said.

For Bay Area residents looking to escape the sooty conditions, the places in California with the cleanest air Thursday were Lake Tahoe, Santa Barbara and, incredibly, Los Angeles, where despite two fires still burning, strong winds were blowing the smoke out to sea.

The Camp Fire, which started the morning of Nov. 8, has burned more than 140,000 acres and was 40 percent contained Thursday morning, according to Cal Fire. It has become the deadliest wildfire in California history, claiming the lives of at least 56 people, with many more still unaccounted for, according to authorities.

Bay Area Air Quality Advisory Extended into Saturday Due to Wildfire Smoke

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued another air quality advisory covering the region for Saturday due to wildfire smoke.

It will mark the fourth straight day that the BAAQMD has had the Bay Area under an air quality advisory. The region has also been under a Spare the Air Alert — which bans the burning of wood or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors — since Thursday. The Spare the Air Alert expires after Friday.

According to a release issued by the BAAQMD, smoke from wildfires in Washington, Oregon and Northern California that moved offshore since midweek will continue to impact the Bay Area on Saturday.

“We’re looking at unhealthy air quality down at ground level.  We think it will be in the orange unhealthy for sensitive groups category,” BAAQMD spokesperson Aaron Richardson told KPIX 5.

The smoky air was inescapable for anyone who was outdoors in the Bay Area on Friday.

“You get this heavy feeling in your chest and it’s not allergies,” said Kim Vostermans who was out for a bike ride with her friend Kelly Hodge in Campbell.

“It’s hard to exercise, it’s hard to go on a walk, walk your dog, ride your bike. It’s hard to eat outside, hard to leave your doors and windows open in this heat. It’s a shame, but again, we’re not the ones trying to fight the fires,” Hodge told KPIX 5.

Rod Pomales pushed hard up Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose on his bike, with the bad air fully in view. “I can smell it a little bit. I’m not feeling it,” Pomales said.

Organizers of Campbell’s Boogie Music Festival — which was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic — are now hoping the air quality won’t keep people away this weekend.

“I’m hoping that the wind kicks in a little bit tonight and shifts a little bit,” said Ken Johnson of the Campbell Chamber of Commerce.

READ MORE: Fauci: Early Reports on Omicron Variant Encouraging

Masks are optional at the festival but preferred now for a couple of reasons, including the smoke.

“It will potentially give people more of a reason to put on their mask if they didn’t want to. So the hope is to have fun and be safe,” Johnson said.

The fires in Northern California have burned more than 1 million acres, or 2,000 square miles during this destructive fire season. The Dixie Fire — which is spread over five counties — has burned over 700,000 acres alone.

The McFarlane Fire burning in Shasta, Trinity and Tehama counties has burned nearly 116,000 acres, while the Caldor Fire in the Sierra Nevada grew again overnight and has now consumed over 73,000 acres, fire officials said Friday.

The lingering smoke drifting over the region will cause hazy, smoky skies with a detectable scent in the air in some areas, though officials noted pollution levels were not expected to exceed federal health standards. Air quality is expected to be in the good to low-moderate range on the Air Quality Index, so no Spare the Air Alert is in effect for Saturday.

The Air District will continue to monitor air quality throughout the region for smoke impacts from the ongoing wildfires.

When the smell of smoke is noticeable, Bay Area residents are advised to protect their health by avoiding exposure. All residents — particularly those with respiratory issues — are advised to stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside, if temperatures allow. The BAAQMD also recommends that those impacted by smoke set their air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside.

Residents can keep track of changes in air quality at baaqmd.gov/highs or the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map at fire.airnow.gov..

To find out when a Spare the Air Alert is in effect, residents can sign up for text alerts by texting the word “START” to 817-57, register for email AirAlerts at sparetheair.org, call 1(800) HELP-AIR, download the Spare the Air App or connect with Spare the Air on Facebook or Twitter.

Current Air Quality Index in US-101, San Jose, CA 95122, USA

Air Pollution in United States - How to find AQI?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed an Air Quality Index that is used to report air quality. This AQI is divided into six categories indicating increasing levels of health concern. An AQI value over 300 represents hazardous air quality and below 50 the air quality is good. The AQI is based on the five "criteria" pollutants regulated under the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. The EPA has established National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for each of these pollutants in order to protect public health. An AQI value of 100 generally corresponds to the level of the NAAQS for the pollutant.[11] The Clean Air Act (USA) (1990) requires EPA to review its National Ambient Air Quality Standards every five years to reflect evolving health effects information. The Air Quality Index is adjusted periodically to reflect these changes.
