Learn Oven 160 c to f baking Conversions

Describing Temperatures

When describing oven temperatures, you'll hear words like "hot," "cool," "slow," and "fast." Here's what all of that means:

  • A cool oven temperature would be 90 C (200 F), while a slow oven is considered 150 to 160 C (300–325 F).
  • A moderate oven temperature is often a range of 180 to 190 C (350–375 F), 160 c to f baking a hot temperature is above 200–230 C (400–450 F).
  • A fast oven would have a range of 230–260 C (450–500 F).

Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

To convert degrees from Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, multiply by 5, then divide by 9. So if the temperature is 350 F, you would subtract 32 to get 318, then multiply by 5 for 1,590 which divided by 9 equals 176.66. That is then rounded up to 180 C.

Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

Recently, I 160 c to f baking a picture of my AEG oven on social media. Mainly because by the end of the day it had been on for 6 hours! When I posted it, it was set to 140°c. This prompted a lot of questions and comments asking what on earth I was baking at such a low temperature.

I’ll let you in 160 c to f baking a (not so big) secret. I bake nearly all of my cakes and cupcakes at 140°c (fan assisted). I find a lower temperature and a longer duration makes for flat tops and moist 160 c to f baking. The ‘Low and Slow’ method! But, just like every baker, every oven is individual. With it’s own personality and temperament, every oven made pretty much does what it likes.

My 7″ round Madeira cake, for example, bakes at 140°c for 1 hour and 30 minutes, as opposed to 180°c at 45 minutes. But by doing so I get nice, deep cakes with flat tops and an even bake. I baked all four of these cakes at the same time in one oven. Two on the top shelf, two on the bottom.

With a lower temperature, the heat can be more evenly distributed. So even though my cakes take longer to bake, it saves me time than having to bake them all individually.

When it comes to biscuits, cookies and brownies, I tend to bake at a 160 c to f baking temperature, around 160-180°c but it will always be listed on my recipe.

According to several tests, different ovens set at the same temperature can vary so much as 90°. It’s pretty mad. The only way to really know what’s going on in there is to buy an oven thermometer. They are easily available online for a few quid and will make the world of difference to your baking. My old oven was 15° hotter than it said it was. This made baking a nightmare in the early days because I thought it was me that was the problem!

If you find that your cakes and cupcakes are dry and always have a peak and a crack, chances are your oven is too hot, and very probably through no fault of your own.

It’s taken me a while to get used to my oven and I know that when I set it to 140°c, I get perfect cakes and cupcakes each time. It sounds obvious, but knowing the exact temperature inside your oven takes the hassle and stress out of baking.

Getting to ‘know’ your oven takes time. It takes patience and practice. Also, the older the oven and the more frequently it is used, the more off the temperature can be. When it comes to gas ovens, unfortunately they aren’t something I have experience in using when it comes to baking, but according to Google, 140°c is Gas Mark 1. Try that and let me know how you get on.

Have a play around with temperatures. Just because it says one number in a recipe book, doesn’t mean you have to stick to it. Experiment, test and try.

As a rule of thumb Celsius is roughly half the Fahrenheit 160 c to f baking assisted ovens are usually set approximately 25 degrees Celsius (i.e. approximately 50 degrees Fahrenheit) lower than others and cooking time is reduced by 10 minutes for every hour of cooking time.

Different manufacturers and oven types do vary, so always refer to your cooker instruction book.

Most modern recipe books and internet sites that provide recipes will give you cooking temperatures based on Gas Mark, Celsius 160 c to f baking (Centigrade) 160 c to f baking Fahrenheit °F, however some don't. For instance many US sites will omit the Celsius temperature. This is where you need a handy oven temperature conversion guide like the one below. You may also find it useful for those family recipes that have been hand written and handed down from your parents or grandparents generations, as most people only write down the oven setting for the oven they have at the time.

Notes

  • Gas Marks are used in the UK, Ireland and some Commonwealth countries.
  • The Gas Mark scale is always in 25 °F breaks. Fahrenheit was the standard measure of temperature in which number is the checking account number on a check the UK until metrication in the late 1960's/early 1970's.
  • Celsius temperatures are given to the nearest 5 degrees.

Fan Ovens (a.k.a. Convection Ovens)

The fan oven (known as a Convection Oven in the US) uses a fan to assist with the flow of air around the oven and therefore provides more even heat distribution throughout the oven. Contra costa county health department has the effect of cooking dishes faster and more evenly, thus when using a recipe, with a standard temperature, lower temperatures should be used if you have a fan oven. As a general rule set the fan oven 20 °C (approx 70 °F) lower than a conventional oven.

The fan oven is often referred to as a convection oven although convection is a term for the natural distribution of heat in air due to the hot air rising and forcing the cold air downwards. This is essentially what happens in a conventional oven to heat the entire oven.

French Gas Oven Temperatures

French recipes may well give oven temperatures as Th1, Th2, Th3 . Th9. The Th stands for Thermostat, thus Thermostat 1 is the French equivalent of Gas Mark 1. You need to be careful as the oven temperatures for the French Th1, Th2 are not the same as those for the UK & Irelands Gas Mark 1, 2 etc. The temperatures for each of the Thermostat values are given in the table below, with conversion to Fahrenheit for those in the US.

There are so many times that a recipe calls for Celsius, Fahrenheit, gas mark or temperature for fan assisted ovens.

However, not all ovens are the same.

I don't know?! (Well, actually I do...it's 180 (see below for a full temperature conversion chart).

I grew up using an electric cooker and °C - things seemed simple.

But, when I moved into my first flat, my cooker was all in gas marks, and I got a little confused!

Then, you look at one recipe book, another website or get a hand-me-down recipe from a friend, and it's all different again!

How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

You can use a formula to convert degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius.

The basic Fahrenheit to Celsius formula is (X°F − 32) × 5/9 = Y°C

So, to work out the temperature to cook in Celsius if you have a recipe in Fahrenheit, subtract 32 from the °F temperature, multiply it by 5, then divide by 9.

For 400°F it would be:

400°F - 32 = 368

368 x 5 = 1840

1840 / 9 = 204.44, which is generally rounded to 200°C

How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

You can use a formula to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit.

The basic Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit formula is (Y°C × 9/5) + 32 = X°F

So, to work out the temperature to cook in Fahrenheit if you have a recipe in Celsius, multiply the °C temperature by 9, divide it by 5, then add 32.

For 200°C it would be:

200°C x 9 = 1800

1800 / 5 = 360

360 + 32 = 392, which is generally rounded to 400°F

Gas oven temperature regulators are not absolutely accurate to a degree and individual ovens may vary slightly, so you can't guarantee the temperature will match the gasmark exactly, but it will be near enough not to matter.

  1. Mr. Mack I feel like saving becomes a mental game because you're seeing all this money being set aside and you can be tempted to use it. Try making a list of things that you could use your money on throughout the week/month and cutting down the list when you're done. You're essentially creating a budget. When this budget is to the point where you're saving more than you're spending, you're set! You also have a responsible way to spend your money throughout the week/month without any worries because you know how much you can spend and not spend.
