Credit Karma matched my approval odds as being "very good". ?I applied and was approved with 4000 starting credit line. ?You have to be a COSTCO card member in order to apply & have this card. ?If you cancel your COSTCO membership your card will be cancelled. ?Keep that in mind when applying. ?

Punitive reporting for usage

This card has the best rewards of my three cards and I had to pay a big one time bill so I decided to use it. ?I paid the bill which was 90% of my limit and then paid off the card right away to avoid a high usage mark. ?They reported the high usage to Transunion immediately and dumped my credit score from excellent to fair on one fell swoop. ?They were absolutely useless on the phone. ?This card wil penalize you for use, avoid all Citi products.

Denied for "too many" inquiries

Credit Karma Member

800+ credit score, $100k+ salary, $0 debt, extremely low utilization rate, one inquiry in 2021, one inquiry in 2020, and yet denied for "too many credit inquiries." Called their reconsideration line and they wouldn't budge. Unbelievable.

A must for Costco Executive members

Credit Karma Member

This card combining both the Costco membership card and Visa credit card makes it very convenient when purchasing gas at Costco gas stations.

Credit Karma Member

680 credit, fair chance of approval, and was approved for 4000. I was shocked. Been working really hard at building my credit back up so this helps...

Credit Karma Member

If I could rate the Costco Anywhere Citicard a 0, I definitely would. Credit Karma always states good approval odds but when you apply CitiCard declines the application. I belong to Costco Executive Membership and spend thousands of dollars every year at Costco so seems a bit odd to be declined. Applicants beware of the misleading information or approval odds. Do your homework and you will find other Visa cards that will approve you. I have actually had a fantastic experience with Discover Card.

Terrible customer service. Incompetent.

Credit Karma Member

Worst experience I have ever had with a CC. Filed a dispute, a month later I followed up and they never opened dispute. Then they reneged on temp credit before deciding. If I could give this card negative stars I would. They do not and will not have your back. Two months later and I still don't have an answer about dispute. Looking forward to closing this account.

807 score. 80k salary. No debt. Denied.

Credit Karma Member

Just baffled right now honestly.

Very pleased with features and service

Credit Karma Member

Great cash back for gas and restaurants, good for other uses as well. Very responsive when I had a dispute, quick to send replacement card when mine was lost, and they offer the ability to lock.unlock the card online.

Terrible customer service

Credit Karma Member

If you have a dispute or fraudulent charge, plan on paying for it. They are not responsive and it takes forever to get through to a person.

Lowered my credit limit!

Credit Karma Member

Easy Card to get, have to maintain a Costco Membership to keep card! Out of the blue lowered my limit, no missed payments, no reason! Worst customer service!

Costco just made a huge change — and furious customers are threatening to cancel memberships

Costco's credit-card swap has customers calling the transition a "debacle" and threatening to cancel their memberships.

On Monday, Costco finalized its partnership with Visa and Citi that makes Visa the card of choice at the budget retailer, ending a 16-year partnership with American Express. With the change, Costco customers who earn rewards through a Costco co-branded credit card will need to use the Costco Anywhere Visa — not the TrueEarnings American Express Costco card.

However, many Costco members say they have not received their new Costco Visa credit card in the mail or are struggling to activate the new card.

Citi has been unable to keep up with questions and complaints from customers about the change, leading to some Costco members waiting for hours to speak with Citi representatives. Costco has 81 million members worldwide.

"The switch over from American Express to Citi Visa at Costco must be a huge mess," longtime Costco member Glenn Ginsburg wrote in an email to Business Insider. "Can't get to speak with a representative regarding my business credit card — have either been hung up on due to large call volume or waiting for 53 minutes to be transferred to another representative."

Ginsburg says that he eventually spoke with someone in Costco's corporate office who was unable to help beyond providing the phone number for Citi assistance that Ginsburg had already called. The Costco customer-relations employee told Ginsburg that Costco had been receiving similar calls from other members, and that while Costco had prepared for the change, Citi may not have put sufficient additional resources toward the project.

Many customers' biggest complaint for Citi is that they have not yet received their Costco Anywhere Visa, which was supposed to be shipped to cardholders in May. As of Monday, the TrueEarnings American Express Costco card — and any other non-Visa credit or debit cards — can no longer be used in Costco.

"I'm thinking that in spite of having many months to work out the distribution of new cards, Citi has committed a 'fail,'" a Costco member who hadn't received the replacement card wrote in an email, calling the switch a "debacle." "Costco may live to regret cutting off AmEx."

Citi responded on Twitter to customers frustrated by long wait times.

Other users expressed their anger on Facebook.

The most common problem expressed in posts on Costco's Facebook page — which has been flooded with complaints — are from users who have not yet received their credit cards.

"The Costco-Visa was a huge unorganized mistake," writes one Costco member. "I have spent over ten hours — over the last 4 weeks — on the phone trying to find out where my new card is, and I still can't get a straight answer."

Citi Costco

"This new 'relationship' with Citibank is a SHAMEFUL OUTRAGE!!" reads another complaint. "I do not have a valid card. I was LIED TO about cards being sent overnight at Citibank's expense. You are losing my monthly groceries, my office supplies, and our family travel business."

Again, the problem of the missing cards and otherCostco Visa cardconfusion has been further complicated by Citi's inability to deal with the volume of calls from customers.

"Worst credit card transition ever — 4 hours and counting on the phone with Citibank and they still can't get my cards to me," writes one customer. "Costco customer service was zero help getting me a temp card at the warehouse too. Saving money isn't worth alienating your members ... seriously rethinking my patronage."

Difficulties related to the credit-card swap have a number of customers threatening to boycott or cancel their memberships.

"To date, more than 11 million cards have been issued to existing Costco cardmembers," Citi spokesperson Jennifer Bombardier told Business Insider on Wednesday. "Due to the tremendous response, some customers experienced delays reaching customer service, however call volumes are starting to return to normal. We sincerely apologize to those who have been inconvenienced and are absolutely committed to serving our existing and new cardmembers."

Costco's new credit card has some of the best rewards on the market, significantly improving on the benefits of the Costco American Express card. However, if customers aren't receiving or can't activate their new Costco Visa cards, the quality of the rewards, frankly, will not matter to some Costco members who are now unable to shop at the retailer.

What you need to know about the Costco - AmEx breakup (and the new Visa)

When Costco COST,   and American Express AXP, , announced a year ago they would be ending their exclusive partnership of 16 years, investors and consumers were worried.

Just after the news about the severed relationship, the credit-card company’s stock fell 6.4%, its largest one-day percentage decline since August 2011.

And cardholders were concerned. There are a lot of bargains to be had at Costco, but the average transaction can be pretty steep (giant packs of paper towels, huge bottles of lotion, big-screen television sets and brontosaurus-sized steaks add up) and paying with a credit card offers shoppers more convenience and flexibility than cash or debit cards.

Costco later announced Visa V,   would replace American Express, starting in spring of 2016, and Citigroup would be the exclusive issuer of Costco co-branded credit cards, leading to a bump in share prices of both Visa and Citigroup C,  .

The timeline was later extended slightly, and June 20 is the first date when Costco will only accept Visa cards, cash, checks, debit and ATM cards, Electronic benefit transfer (EBT) and Costco Cash cards.

Read: Why Costco shareholders shouldn’t fear the transition to Visa from AmEx

Citi has said new Costco customers who are hoping to apply for the Costco Anywhere Visa card won’t receive more information on the application process until June.

American Express’s Chief Executive Ken Chenault has said losing the partnership with Costco will impact one in 10 AmEx cards in circulation and would likely eat into the company’s earnings in 2015 and 2016.

For some consumers, American Express’s exclusive relationship with Costco was the only reason to get an American Express card at all, said Eric Wasserstrom, a managing director at Guggenheim Securities LLC, who covers American Express.

This isn’t the first time a retailer and credit-card issuer have split up.

In 2014, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. switched its co-branded credit cards from Discover to MasterCard. And in 2013, Capital One sold its Best Buy co-branded credit-card portfolio to Citigroup. After that switch, Best Buy changed its credit-card processing partner from MasterCard to Visa.

“People do tend to be pretty brand loyal and hold onto their credit cards for a long time,” said Matt Schulz, a senior industry analyst for credit-card website “And AmEx, more than any credit-card issuer has cultivated that sort of brand loyalty over the years. People are like, ‘Well, I’m an AmEx user,’ and when that changes, that can be disruptive.”

For consumers who have a Costco American Express card, there are a few important things to know.

1. The transition isn’t happening quite yet.

In October 2015, Costco sent a note to its customers, explaining that the company wouldn’t be renewing its partnership with American Express, assuring them that with the new Citi and Visa cards, customers would have “the opportunity to earn generous rewards,” and that they would not have to apply for any new credit cards, or take any other immediate action.

Although originally Costco told consumers the transition would happen “sometime after March 31, 2016” when the partnership expires, the company later said they will extend their agreement with American Express until “mid 2016,” “to allow for adequate time to properly transition to our new credit card partners, Citi and Visa.”

Costco will accept the Costco/American Express credit cards (as will all other locations that accept American Express) until June 20.

2. There are some opportunities for consumers.

It’s clear the end of the partnership isn’t good for American Express, but for consumers who are willing to endure the transition, there could even be some upside.

Citi announced the details of the new Costco card, which will have rewards some have said are better than the former American Express Costco card.

It includes 4% cash back on eligible gas for the first $7,000 per year (and then 1% after), 3% cash back on restaurants and eligible travel purchases, 2% cash back on all other purchases from Costco and and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

American Express’s Costco card offered 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations, for up to $4,000 per year in purchases and 2% cash back on U.S. restaurants and eligible travel.

Because the card companies are always in tight competition with one another, and they want to preserve their reputations, experts said the companies involved will try to cut down on consumer headaches during the transition.

Costco will also accept non-cobranded Visa cards.

“Citi and Visa will try to make (the transition) as seamless as possible,” said Jason DeLeeuw, a senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray who covers American Express. “American Express has incentive to make it as seamless as possible also. Any time you’re getting a new card, that’s somewhat disruptive, but they will try to do it as seamlessly as possible for the consumer.”

For Costco shoppers loyal to the store, there isn’t much choice involved, pointed out John Hecht, a senior research analyst who specializes in consumer finance at Jefferies and covers American Express. Despite having to switch to new cards, they may just view the temporary disruption as the cost of doing business there.

And there may even be ways for consumers to benefit, he said.

American Express will likely try to recapture the customers it’s losing because of the Costco deal, he said. As a result, in the coming months American Express may come out with some appealing offers, to offer incentives to consumers who they’ll lose to Visa and Citigroup.

“If they haven’t already started, soon they’ll be starting to pick off as many of those Costco customers as they can,” Wasserstrom said. American Express didn’t respond to a request for comment, when asked if there will be any new offers for Costco cardholders.

Costco customers should check their mail for any offers in the coming months, Schulz said.

“This situation sort of makes the former Costco/American Express cardholders a free agent,” he said. “They might find themselves being offered some interesting bonuses from AmEx to stay with a different AmEx card because AmEx knows those people did a pretty good job paying their bills, and they want to keep them around. Meanwhile Costco might do the same.”

3. The transition should not affect your credit score.

Cardholders won’t need to apply for the new Costco Visa card, and they’ll receive their new cards by mail in mid May or early June 2016, Costco said on its website.

The transition should not affect Costco customers’ credit scores; Citibank will not have to pull a credit report as part of the account transfer process, and cardholders can keep their same line of credit.

When banks purchase an entire credit-card portfolio, as is the case for the American Express transition to new Costco co-branded cards, transfer and account numbers will change, but the accounts’ average age won’t, as personal-finance company NerdWallet explained in detail on its website. (Opening a new card factors negatively into a credit score because it lowers the average age of all the credit-card accounts a consumer has; a longer credit history signifies more stability.) The new issuer also should not have to make a “hard credit inquiry,” which can lead to the deduction of a few points on one’s score, because the company already has the consumer’s credit-card activity on file.

But note, if you do apply for a new American Express card (meaning the one American Express is offering doesn’t just arrive in the mail), the application process actually could dock your score if American Express has to do a “hard pull” to approve you for the card, NerdWallet points out.

4. You can still carry an American Express balance.

On American Express’s frequently asked questions page, the company also noted that when the partnership ends, consumers will not be required to pay their balance in full; they will be allowed to still carry a balance. Of course, shoppers should be careful with this; that’s a plus for American Express, which will be collecting interest.

5. You will have to re-enter your credit-card information for any recurring payments you make on your Costco AmEx card.

Because the new card will have a new number, consumers will have to be careful and make adjustments to their information on any recurring online payments.

It’s similar to the process consumers go through after a data breach, Schulz said. He recommends keeping a spreadsheet at all times of any automatic credit-card payments to keep track of them easily.

+ see card details

Since you're already paying an annual membership fee to be a Costco member, you instantly gain the ability to apply for the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. With a $0 annual fee, Costco shoppers will be able to enjoy even greater returns on their already-low-priced merchandise.

Earn with a lucrative rewards rate

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi comes with a remarkable rewards rate: 4% cash back on eligible gas for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter, 3% on restaurants & travel, 2% at Costco &, 1% on all other purchases.

In the categories where it earns more than 1%, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi produces far better returns than many other credit cards. The 4% rewards rate on gas alone makes this card one of the best credit cards for gas purchases. The 3% rewards rate on travel outperforms some of the top travel credit cards — although you're not earning miles, giving you fewer opportunities to maximize your rewards.

We've compared the estimated annual savings based on an average household budget between the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi and the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer, which lets you Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases.

Gas: $3,000$120$60
Dining: $2,625$79$53
Groceries: $3,977$80$80
General: $664$7$13

By our estimates, the average shopper will come out $80 ahead on their everyday purchases with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, compared to the Citi® Double Cash Card . In general, you'll earn more cash back on gas, dining and grocery purchases with this card than with most other cards.

No sign-up bonus

One small drawback to note about the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is the lack of a sign-up bonus. While this won't matter in the long run, welcome bonuses attract many consumers to reward credit cards — boosting the short-term value tremendously. For example, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ lets you Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. And earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year.

Redeem your Costco Cash Rewards for cash or Costco purchases

Another major downside of the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is that it restricts reward redemption to just once per year. All the cash back you earn is provided in the form of an annual certificate in February, and you have until Dec. 31 of each year to complete the redemption before your certificate expires.

Worse yet, if your account gets canceled, all the rewards will be gone. You won't have a chance to cash them out.

If you decide to close your account, the rewards will be forfeited and not mailed to you. However, despite this hurdle in redemption, we believe that the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is still highly valuable for frequent Costco shoppers.

Cover your items with purchase protection

An underrated perk of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi are its purchase protection benefits. If your item is damaged or stolen within 120 days of purchase (90 days for New York residents), you can submit a claim with Citi to cover the cost of repair or a refund. This benefit applies to all purchases — not just at Costco.

Enjoy Citi exclusive benefits

One of the added benefits is access to Citi Entertainment, a feature that comes with most Citi cards. Citi Entertainment offers exclusive access to thousands of events, including presale tickets to concerts and sporting events and special dining experiences in.

Is it worth signing up for a Costco membership just for the credit card?

If the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi appeals to you, but you aren't a member of the wholesale store, it may be worthwhile to sign up to get the card. The most basic Costco membership costs $60 per year, providing you with unlimited shopping privileges at Costco locations and If we treat that as the credit card's annual fee, the issue boils down to whether this card will get you enough cashback rewards to still come out ahead. If you spend $2,000 on restaurants and dining alone, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi will earn you rewards that will compensate for the basic membership fee.

But you'll need to be certain that you won't charge more to the card than you can afford each month. The card's standard APR is 15.24% (Variable) and applies to balance transfers. If you don't pay your statement in full, the savings you enjoy from this card could end up being meaningless.

How does the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi compare against other credit cards?

If you're seeking flexibility on receiving and redeeming cash back, there are many other highly rewarding cashback cards. Below we compare how the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi performs against other top cashback credit cards.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi vs. Chase Freedom Flex℠

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ is a great new cashback credit card from Chase. The card lets you Earn 5% cash back on eligible purchases in rotating categories, 5% on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1% on all other purchases. Gas stations and grocery stores are typically included in Chase's rotating categories throughout the year, though this card's 5% quarterly bonus category is limited to $1,500 in purchases per quarter. Ultimate Rewards points are credited to your account each month.

One major drawback for Costco shoppers: the Chase Freedom Flex℠ is a Mastercard, which currently isn't accepted at Costco stores (though you can use it for purchases online). However, you're best off using it for its 5% categories, which generally won't apply to Costco.

As mentioned above, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ comes with an easy-to-earn sign-up bonus: Earn a $200 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. And earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year. We like that you can accumulate and redeem rewards on this card in a variety of ways.

This card comes with purchase protection against damage or theft and extended warranty protection. But for consumers looking to optimize their rewards, our recommendation is to get both cards. Use the Chase Freedom Flex℠ whenever you can get 5% cash back on rotating categories and 3% on drugstores, and the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi in all other circumstances.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi vs. Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer

The Citi® Double Cash Card is a prime example of a fixed-rate cashback card. Those who use it will Earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. The purchasing power of the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer comes through on categories beyond gas, restaurants and travel. If you significantly spend outside of these categories — such as on entertainment or retail purchases — the Citi® Double Cash Card is the better option.

Like the Chase Freedom Flex℠, the Citi® Double Cash Card is Mastercard and so won't work within Costco stores. However, you might consider using it as your go-to card for purchases that don't fall under the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi's categories. Since neither card comes with an annual fee, you always have the option of signing up for both cards and using the card that offers a better rate on a particular purchase.

Like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, there's no sign-up bonus with the Citi® Double Cash Card . However, for long-term cardholders, the card's rewards could exceed the value of a card with a sign-up bonus.

Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi vs. Discover it® Cash Back Card

Similar to the Chase Freedom Flex℠, the Discover it® Cash Back Card offers 5% cash back at different places each quarter up to the quarterly maximum when you activate, 1% unlimited cash back on all other purchases - automatically. And, like the Chase Freedom Flex℠, this bonus is limited to $1,500 in purchases per quarter (all other purchases get 1% cash back).

Some consumers may prefer the Discover it® Cash Back Card over the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, as it typically includes wholesale clubs in Q2. Other categories that may be enticing include grocery stores, gas stations and You can also redeem your rewards each month, rather than waiting on a certificate to be mailed out at the end of the year.

Another reason to consider the Discover it® Cash Back Card over the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is the introductory offer: Unlimited Cashback Match – only from Discover. Discover will automatically match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year! There’s no minimum spending or maximum rewards. You could turn $150 cash back into $300. If you're a high spender, this could significantly boost your short-term savings.

Like the other cards above, you won't be able to use the Discover it® Cash Back Card for in-store purchases at Costco. However, you can use it everywhere else to earn a large amount of cash back through the Cashback Match in your first year.

ValuePenguin's verdict

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi offers some of the highest returns for life's most common purchase categories. Although there's a $0 annual fee, this card is only reserved for Costco members. If you've been thinking about purchasing a Costco membership, then the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi could help you maximize your savings each year.

The information related to Discover it® Cash Back has been independently collected by ValuePenguin and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer of this card prior to publication.
