Google one mac app -

Nice to have but not necessary

This slightly complex app takes on the tasks of storage, back up, and Google account management.

Google One is essentially a service, and the accompanying app helps you to manage such service. What is good about the app is that it is an easy way to oversee your account, and view and change plan details within the app. Those changes can include sharing your storage plan with up to 5 family members.

There are several storage plans to choose from to suit your needs. As well as using the cloud-based storage for items on your Google account, the app lets you make a backup of your Android phone. There are a couple of nice bonus features that come with it as well. You can obtain member benefits, such as credits and discounts, and you can contact Google support team for help with various products and services.

While it is handy to be able to manage your storage plan, even with the bonus features, the app doesn’t fulfill many functions.  It leaves you feeling like this should be a section of another app like Google Drive. It is quite difficult to get to grip with some of the tasks in the app, such as the backup function. This is also the area that is most prone to errors, with backup failures or incorrect information displaying.

Where can you run this program?

Google One requires Android 4.2 and above.

Is there a better alternative?

No. For managing your Google One storage, this app does the job and gives you some benefits.

Our take

This app is unnecessary and can be confusing. That being said, it does have some uses, such as plan management if you have bought more storage.

Should you download it?

Yes. If you want to back up your phone and have the option to manage storage from here, it will come in hand.

Google One is an official app (developed by Google) that provides you with an easy way to manage your cloud storage. Basically, it consolidates Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos all into one single spot on your phone. Obviously, in order to access this service, you’ll need to set up a paid subscription on Google Drive beforehand. Otherwise, you won’t get any of the features included in Google One.

That said, one of the best things about Google One is that it's really easy to share your cloud storage with up to 5 friends. Plus, if you come across some trouble, you can talk to a Google service technician at any time directly via Google One. That way if an issue arises with your storage, you’ll be able to figure it out in no time.

Google One is a simple file management app that takes care of organizing all your cloud storage on Google, but it’s exclusively designed for users that have a ‘Premium’ account on Google Drive. If you’re one of the lucky few to have a paid cloud storage subscription on Google Drive, then now you’ll have it even easier when it comes to handling all your files that are up in the cloud.

How to set up Google Drive desktop App easily

Drive File Stream is now Google Drive for desktop

Google has made some of the changes that affect its cloud storage apps on PC. Earlier, the company offered two solutions for Google Drive users: Drive File Stream, which is intended for business customers, and Backup & Sync, for personal use.

According to the statement, later this year, these two clients will be merged into the new Google Drive for Desktop app. As the company notes, for Drive File Stream users nothing will change, except for the name - the functionality will remain the same. Google has already renamed Drive File Stream to Google Drive for Desktop in the new version of the application (v.45). Nevertheless, Backup & Sync users will need to migrate to the new client when it becomes available. The beta version is promised to be released in the near future.

Google says the unified solution should reduce user confusion over which cloud sync app to use. In addition, it should make it easier for administrators to manage IT departments.

Google Drive Apple M1 Mac Support is Now Live and That's NOT ALL to Expect Coming Soon

Isaiah Alonzo, Tech Times

Google Drive is now available for support and full compatibility with Apple M1 Macs that launched last November, and initially having difficulties in working with other developer applications and software. A full range of Google's services and products are also coming to the new Silicon chip's systems to work and combine its processes well for the user's benefits.

The popular internet company based in Mountain View, Google, has announced that it has fixed all compatibility issues that have persisted with its systems to work with the latest M1, also known as the next-generation chip. Google's suite of products is one of the most used programs in the world, with most of them based on the internet for PCs.

Apple has also been trying to open up the Silicon-based ARM architecture chips for other systems and software apart from its own, hosting to different services and software that are offered by external companies. The company is also trying to move away from the Rosetta 2 which has been the answer to work most applications in the M1 Macs, which are created for the Intel-Macs.

According to Google's latest update on Google Drive's backup and sync capabilities, it is now readily available and usable with the SoC (system-on-chip) M1 Macs that have a different interface compared to the Intel-Macs. The version 3.54 update is specifically made for its support and compatibility with the Apple M1 Macs, which would also be the future of Macs.

After turning away from Intel processors, Apple is now facing the years to come with its high-performance 5nm Silicon M1 Chips that have all its necessary process in it, featuring a better performing range of computers. The Google update went live last week and has been working smoothly with Apple's M1 Macs since its release.

However, that is not the only news for Apple M1 users, as Google aims to update its entire range of services and products to adhere to the new system that Apple has created for the future of its PC Computers. An entire suite of products including Google Drive File Stream would soon join the list of products that support the new Silicon chip.

Google Products Soon Coming to Apple M1 Macs

Google may have launched Google Drive's backup and sync capabilities for the Apple M1 Macs, but the internet company would not stop there. Soon, it would bring its products and systems for M1 users to fully take advantage of, and use as necessary for the needs of the transitioning users.

Despite Apple having its own cloud service system called the iCloud, Google Drive would be an ideal second choice or backup in case the former gets full from backing up other of Apple's devices in one's possession. According to Tech Radar, users would not have to wait long as Google plans to release all this in April.

You should download the new Google Drive for Desktop

You might be familiar with Google Drive from its web interface or its mobileapps. But desktop software is available as well, allowing you to seamlessly sync files stored in your Google Drive with the file system on your Windows or macOS computer.

After four years since its last update, that desktop software setup is changing again, and the current tools (Backup & Sync for free account holders, and Drive File Stream for enterprise customers), will be replaced by a new, single platform called Drive for Desktop.

You can carry on accessing Google Drive in your web browser and mobile apps as always—creating Docs, Sheets, and Slides just the same as before. But if you want to keep data from Google Drive on your computer and sync it to the cloud, or if you’ve got large batches of files you need to upload to your Drive, then you’ll want to download the desktop application.

What Drive for Desktop does

Drive for Desktop turns Google Drive into a fully-fledged file syncing service rather than just a cloud storage locker—think Dropbox, OneDrive, and iCloud. When using the software, your documents will be simultaneously on your hard drive and available on the web, though you can choose which files and folders are stored locally and which aren’t.

There are a few reasons to sync files locally rather than just accessing Google Drive through your web browser every time. First, it means that if your computer is offline or has a slow internet connection, you can still watch those HD videos you’ve got stored in your Google Drive folder.

[Related: Become a Google Drive power user with these 20 tips and tricks]

Using the desktop software also makes the uploading process much easier, as it’s a more automated process. As soon as something new moves into the local folders Google Drive is keeping an eye on, the files will be uploaded to the cloud in the background.

The new Drive for Desktop software can upload files from external drives as well, and it’s smart enough to manage multiple Google accounts at once.

If you have a second computer, then you have double the efficiency—Google Drive will keep all or some of your files and folders synced between your devices, and once you’ve installed and set up the software, everything just works.

Over the next few weeks, Google will start sending prompts in the Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream tools to encourage users to start switching over. You can keep using the old platforms, but that won’t last long—at the start of October 2021, you’ll need to update to the newer application to access your files.

How to install and use Drive for Desktop

If you’re running Backup and Sync or Drive File Stream, get rid of these programs first.

On Windows, open the main Settings pane and choose Apps, Apps & features, the program to remove, and Uninstall. On macOS, drag the app icon down to the Trash icon on the dock or from Applications in Finder.

At the time of writing, Google hasn’t put up a proper landing page for the new Drive for Desktop software, but you can download both Windows and macOS versions from the Google blog.

You’ll first need to sign in to your Google account. You’ll go through a series of introduction slides, and after that, the wizard will guide you to the Google Drive folder in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS), and you’ll be able to browse your files straight away. Anything you add to this Google Drive folder will automatically be uploaded to the cloud.

By default, everything is kept in the cloud and only in the cloud—the blue cloud symbol on each file icon shows that they’re not locally stored. You can use these symbols as a bookmark to know what’s stored on your system and what lives in the cloud

[Related: The 7 best Google Docs anonymous animals, ranked]

If you open files with the cloud symbol, they will be temporarily streamed to your computer (just like a movie or music track) so you can view and edit it. If you leave Google Drive working like this, you’ll minimize the amount of local hard drive space your files take up. The biggest caveat is that larger files may take a while to properly load as Drive for Desktop will have to download them each time you access them.

In that case, it’s better to save large files you edit a lot both on your computer and in the cloud. That way you can work on them more easily, and any edits you make to them will also be synced back to the cloud once you’re back online again. To permanently save a folder or file to your disk, so you can access it even while offline, right-click (or Cmd+click on a Mac) on it and choose Offline access and Available offline

The same right-click (or Cmd+click) menu offers plenty of other options as well: You can revert back to a previous version of a file for example, or get a link to share it with someone else. These same options are accessible through the Google Drive web interface as well, as they’ve always been, but you might find it easier to get at them from your Windows or macOS computer.

You can find a few more options on the Settings pane. Click the Drive icon in the notification area (Windows) or on the menu bar (macOS), then click the cog icon and pick Preferences. The screen that appears enables you to have the program start up at the same time as the operating system, and you can choose to move the location of the Google Drive folder on the local hard drive if you want to.
