2018 Lexus GS 350 F Sport Review: A sporty executive sedan

Not only are buyers shying away from mainstream sedans, but the future of the luxury sedan market is also in flux as buyers move to crossovers. Over at Lexus the future of two of its sedans, the IS and GS are in jeopardy as even Lexus has admitted that it’s currently evaluating both sedans. While the Lexus GS may soon get pushed out of the lineup, it competes in the meat of the luxury sedan segment with a long list of rivals, including the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Genesis G80 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

      2018 Lexus GS 350 F Sport Review

To give us a taste of the GS’s potential, Lexus dropped the keys off to a 2018 Lexus GS 350 F Sport, which sits in the middle of the GS lineup, between the four-cylinder GS 300 and the GS 450 hybrid. If you want something a bit more over the top, Lexus does also offer the high performance 467-hp GS F.

The GS 350 F Sport is powered by a 3.5L V6 with 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of torque that’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available if you need it. The GS 350 F Sport is no slouch since it only takes 5.7 seconds to reach 60 mph on its way to a top speed of 143 mph.

      2018 Lexus GS 350 F Sport Review

The rear-wheel drive GS 350 F Sport is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. If you choose the all-wheel drive version, it’s rated at 19 in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Compared to the standard GS 350, the GS 350 F Sport adds a sportier suspension, 19-inch wheels, 14-inch front brake rotors and more aggressive exterior styling.

With 311 horsepower on tap, the GS 350 F Sport picks up speed with ease and you can dial up the performance a bit by switching the dial to either the Sport S or Sport S+ driving modes. While previous Lexus sedans have been criticized for being a bit too soft, the GS 350 F Sport feels and drives like a true sport sedan. The transmission downshifts quickly and the steering does provide adequate feedback. Compared to the Genesis G80 Sport, the GS 350 Sport also feels a bit more nimble, especially when the road gets a bit twisty.

      2018 Lexus GS 350 F Sport Review

While the 2018 GS 450 F Sport does have the athletic experience that sport sedan buyers demand, that doesn’t mean that the interior takes a hit. The GS 350 F Sport’s interior is as quiet and comfortable as you’d expect from any sedan with a Lexus badge on the grille. Inside the interior has more than enough room for four passengers, although the fifth passenger in the middle of the rear seat may not want to sit there too long, since knee room is a bit limited.

While the GS 350 F Sport’s interior is comfortable and on par with its rivals, its tech features may leave you wanting a bit more. For starters Lexus uses the Remote Touch multimedia controller to access the infotainment system with its massive 12.3-inch screen, which takes a bit to get used to since it’s mouselike controller isn’t as easy to use as a touchscreen system. Lexus also hasn’t fully embraced Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility, so if you rely on either system to get you through your trip, you’ll be a bit disappointed.

With a starting price at $46,510, the 2018 Lexus GS represents a nice value over some of its rivals that cost thousands more, like the Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

      2018 Lexus GS 350 F Sport Review

The Lexus GS may not have much longer in this world, since it’s already been discontinued in Europe and there’s a rumor that the next-generation IS could replace it. But for now, the 2018 Lexus GS 350 F Sport is a competent sport sedan that can hold its own against its German rivals. Its combination of sporty handling, several engine options and a lower starting price makes the 2018 GS a strong rival. Even if the Lexus GS does eventually disappear, after four generations, the GS has continued its fight against its German rivals and this latest version is the best one yet.

The Lexus GS may still be regarded as one of the core models of the Japanese luxury automaker but that could change soon. A report from last year revealed the company is taking a “strategic look” at the IS and GS sedans, which hints at a possible demise for both cars in the near future. While that’s not happening for the 2020 model year, the GS’ model range will be simplified.

A spokesman for Lexus has confirmed to CarsDirect the base GS 300 model will be discontinued after the 2019 model year. Basically, this will leave the sedan with just two available models, the GS 350 and the performance GS F. The move has a logical explanation though – people just don’t buy the entry-level GS anymore.

"The GS 300 represented a small percentage of GS sales in lexus gs 350 f Lexus spokesperson Alissa Moceri confirmed to our source. "We are constantly evaluating model mixes throughout our lineup."

For 2020, the base price of the GS 350 will be $52,420, while the range-topper GS F will start at $86,035. Compared to the 2019 model year, with the GS 300 still available at $47,885, this represents a price jump of the entry-level model by $4,535. With lexus gs 350 f GS, Lexus will continue to target “midsize sport sedan buyers who are looking for exciting performance, sumptuous luxury, and world-class quality."

It will be interesting to see whether the GS, which was first introduced in its current generation back in 2011, will survive in its current form after 2020. Nothing has been officially confirmed so far but the company is obviously going to spend money on research and development for new vehicles that consumers want and will buy. Unfortunately, with sales of the GS in the low hundreds for the entire 2017, 2018, and 2019 so far, the future doesn’t seem bright for the luxury sedan.

DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: Wife summed it up best as we cruised down I-75 in the 2015 Lexus GS 350 F Sport: “This car feels old.” Upon further inquiry, she pointed out the ’80s-vintage separate digital clock (and matching temperature readouts for the auto climate control), and the silver-finished knobs and trim as particular examples of dated design. It’s true, too -- though this is only the third model year of the current GS, all the dash real estate below the very high-tech split-screen infotainment system appears inspired by a late-1970s Marantz receiver. I like that look in my living room, but less so in my car.

To some extent, the car’s exterior follows a similar pattern -- conventional to the point of staid from the rear bumper to the leading edge of the hood, then at the front fascia all hell breaks loose with dripping, drooling plastic curves. It’s not ugly, specifically, but that maw is so organic I’d be afraid to walk in front of it in a dark parking lot.

But what of the F Sport option in our tester? Unlike, say, Cadillac’s Vsport CTS, the F Sport GS skips power upgrades and focuses on trim, suspension and braking. The net result is far more a luxury car than a performance machine -- extraordinarily stable and silent, the Lexus also feels large and heavy in the vein of German sedans. Its focus is on drama-free motoring, but the Lexus will jump and run if the throttle is used properly -- the Toyota V6 switches soundtracks from unobtrusive to F1 car in a blink, and the result is more fun than you’d expect from this sedan.

But fun is not this car’s forte. I keep coming back to the Cadillac CTS Vsport I drove a few weeks ago because…well, the price is nearly identical, both cars have a letter plus the word “Sport” in the name and they’re similarly configured. For equal money, the Cadillac trades AWD for about 100 additional turbocharged horsepower, and the difference, my friends, is astonishing. Combined with the CTS’ nimble chassis, the Lexus is a sumo wrestler while the Caddy is a ballerina with a switchblade.

The Lexus die-hards out there may look at the GS F Sport’s specs and find it’s exactly what they’ve been seeking. I personally don’t get it -- it’s a solid but bland entry in a segment with several far better choices.

EXECUTIVE CREATIVE DIRECTOR KEN ROSS: Lexus has done a great job on this car, the design is classic and they have incorporated the large spindle grille into the GS in the subtle manner. To me, the way the grille was being used in the past looked like it was forced onto an existing design. Now it feels like part of the car versus a forced design piece.

The interior is flawless as usual -- comfortable and well appointed. Everything is easily accessible and the design on the IP is clean and I didn’t find myself searching around for stuff.

I didn’t expect to lexus gs 350 f driving this car as much as I did, because typically Lexus vehicles are a little soft. But this GS 350 F Sport cornered well, and acceleration from the V6 is swift. The brake pedal felt a little soft, though. Lexus gs 350 f -

    Exterior

The new GS 350 F-Sport will be distinguished from the standard GS by a sporty front bumper and rear lower valence, a new rear lip spoiler, unique F-Sport mesh grille inserts, and F-Sport badging. The vehicle also has a wider stance thanks to minor changes in the placement of lights, fins, and the rear bumper underbody area. The front grille will be illuminated with deep-set, high-tech headlamps and L-shaped LED daytime running lamps that use a projector beam design.

Standard F-Sport models will get a new set of 19-inch wheels paired with 235/40/19 all-season tires in the front and rear, while the RWD models will be exclusively equipped with 19-inch staggered width wheels paired with 235/40/19 front and 265/35/19 rear tires, the widest rear tires ever on a Lexus sedan.

The new F-Sport package also adds two new exterior colors: Riviera Red and Liquid Platinum. Vehicles in Riviera Red will benefit from glass flakes incorporated into the coating that add a high level of brilliance to the paint. The Liquid Platinum models will get an additional metallic texture for "strong shading and defined, sharp highlights."

    Interior

The sport treatment will continue on for the interior with the use of smooth striated aluminum trim, unique perforated leather trim, a black headliner, aluminum pedals, and, of course, F-Sport badges. Customers will also have the option to choose a striking Cabernet Red leather interior.

The new GS 350 F-Sport has been developed with the driver in mind, so it has received a new 16-way power sport seat for increased lateral support. The driver’s seat will be a Lexus-first with power side bolsters, thigh support, adjustable seatback, and four-way lumbar. Other standard technological additions include a new energy-saving auto climate control system called S-Flow. This system uses the occupant-detection system to focus airflow only to the front area where passengers are actually seated. That is paired up with a next-generation Remote Touch with one-push confirmation that allows the user to operate the climate, audio, phone controls, optional navigation system, and more with the use of screen menus. This system eliminates the need for drivers to reach out to operate the controls and reduced eye movement. A standard rear back-up camera is also thrown into the standard list.

    Engine

The new Lexus GS350 F-Sport is powered by the same engine as the standard model: an advanced 3.5-liter V6 with four cams and four valves per cylinder and dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. This engine will deliver a total of 306 HP and will propel the car from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. It is mated to a six-speed sequential shift automatic transmission that has four driving modes: Normal, ECO, Sport S, and Sport S+.

What the F-Sport package adds is an optional, newly developed Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system with Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS). This system offers Lexus’ first integration of DRS; Electric Power Steering; and Variable Gear Ratio Steering. It monitors your the vehicle’s speed, steering direction, and driver inputs, and uses that information to calculate the optimum angle for all four wheels. This system can also independently manage both front and rear wheel steering angles to help improve turn-in response, rear grip, vehicle control, and overall agility when cornering.

Optional features include a Pre-Collision System, which provides early warning of certain objects traveling directly ahead that might result in a front-end collision; a Night Vision System that enhances driver visibility at night; Heads Up Display; a Blind Spot Monitor; and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

    Prices

Prices for the new 2013 Lexus GS 350 F-Sport will be announced at a later date.

    Competition

The competition for the new GS350 F-Sport is the same as with the standard model: the BMW 5-Series and the Infiniti M37. Both models might be more powerful than the GS and the 5-Series is definitely more popular than the other two, but we have to give props to the new Lexus GS350. It has moved up in the world and can now boast of being more elegant, fresher, and sportier than its predecessor. The F-Sport package helps out too.

I didn’t expect to enjoy driving this car as much as I did, because typically Lexus vehicles are a little soft. But this GS 350 F Sport cornered well, and acceleration from the V6 is swift. The brake pedal felt a little soft, though. A little more stopping bite would be appreciated, but Lexus is getting closer to matching the performance of its European counterparts.

"The GS 300 represented a small percentage of GS sales in 2018," Lexus spokesperson Alissa Moceri confirmed to our source.

With the GS, Lexus will continue to target “midsize sport sedan buyers who are looking for exciting performance, sumptuous luxury, and world-class quality."
