i m still standing gorilla

Elton John "I'm Still Standing": You could never know what it's like Your blood like winter freezes just like ice And there's a cold. John Dennis made the remark Monday on WEEI-AM after seeing a newspaper photograph of the gorilla standing by a bus stop, saying the animal. The wearing comfort is not quite 5 stars, because the speakers are lying and not standing and rub while running (one left, one right) on the legs.

If there's one name you likely saw on your social media timelines this week, or perhaps overheard IRL, it's John Mulaney. I know I've thought about the beloved comedian more this week than perhaps any other week in my life, and I (along with what seems like all of the internet) have been thinking: Wow, who knew I was that invested in John Mulaney's personal life? Mulaney returned to the stage this week for a weeklong set at City Winery in New York titled, "From Scratch," in which he touches on his recent experience in rehab and recovery. (Esquire's Summer cover star Chris Rock reportedly opened for him one of the nights.) The broader implication of the set, according to Vulture's Jesse David Fox, is that Mulaney—like all of us—is trying to figure out who he is after the pandemic.

Right now, Mulaney, 38, is a recurring character in the tabloids. That's remarkable, because Mulaney is a popular comedian with a loyal fanbase—he's big enough to sell out Radio City Music Hall, host SNL multiple times, and appear on the cover of Esquire—but he's not on the order of Chris Rock or Jerry Seinfeld. Yet that seems to be his trajectory. And having your personal life splashed across the pages of the New York Post, an institution Mulaney previously joked about in his 2012 comedy special "New in Town" ("reading the New York Post is like talking to someone who heard the news and now they're trying to give you the gist"), i m still standing gorilla part of that ascent. For better or worse.

On December 21, 2020, the Post's Page Six first reported that Mulaney had checked himself into rehab for cocaine and alcohol addiction. Then, in late February, Page Six said Mulaney had completed 60 days in a Pennsylvania rehab facility and was continuing his recovery as an outpatient. He was reportedly "doing well." Mulaney shared details about the roots of his addiction in a 2019 Esquire cover story. Jonah Weiner writes:

He spent the entirety of his teens and the early part of his twenties as an addict, spiraling out of control. He began drinking at thirteen—initially, he says, to deal with the awkwardness of adolescence, and then to excess, because “alcohol is addictive,” he says, and he didn’t want to stop. “I drank for attention,” he tells me. “I was really outgoing, and then at twelve, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.” Drugs soon followed. “I never liked smoking pot. Then I tried cocaine, and I loved it. I wasn’t a good athlete, so maybe it was some young male thing of This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I’m still standing. Who’s the athlete now?” When Mulaney was a teenager, his parents sent him to a psychiatrist, who told him that he was one part nice kid, one part “gorilla that wants to kill the other half.”

Throughout his late teens and early twenties, Mulaney struggled with routine blackouts from his drinking and drug use. "I was like, you're fucking out of control. And I thought to myself, I don't like this guy anymore," Mulaney said at the time. At 23, he went sober, cold-turkey, without the use of a program. Knowing this history, it was good to hear that Mulaney had successfully completed his rehab program.

But there was more news to come about Mulaney.

On Monday, Page Six broke the news that Mulaney and his wife, Anna Marie Tendler, were divorcing after seven years of marriage and parenting their extremely cute French bulldog, Petunia Tendler-Mulaney. Through a spokesperson, Tendler said: “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage," adding, "I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”

Call it fandom, call it a prime example of parasocial relationships, but many online were gutted to hear about the couple's divorce. Mulaney is known for his autobiographical comedy, making his fans feel like they know him, and feel personally invested in his life. Then, as if the divorce news wasn't enough to process, on Thursday, People reported that a "source close to the couple" (aren't they always) shared that Mulaney is now dating Olivia Munn. It's a PR rollercoaster aptly summed up by this tweet:

What Taron Egerton Has Been Up To Since Kingsman

In addition to his multitudes of movie roles, Egerton has recently found himself away from the silver screen and onto television. Over the past three years, Egerton played roles in four separate TV series. Many of these were British productions, but in the past year he has found himself going international in DC's collection of ongoing shows.

Even before Kingsman, Egerton acted in the 2014 TV miniseries, The Smoke. Once Kingsman happened, however, Egerton took the next four years to focus on movies. It wasn't until 2018's Watership Down, an adaptation of the novel by Richard Adams, that Egerton would return to TV, lending his voice to the project. Egerton would follow this appearance up with more voice work the 2019 prequel series to Jim Henson's Dark Crystal called Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The actor would lend his voice to another book adaptation with his role in the Moominvalley TV series that same year. Finally, Egerton crossed over into comics, inheriting the role of John Constantine in DC's adaptation of The Sandman, which has yet to see release.

Though he loves his father, he doesn't want to follow his footsteps in becoming a bank robber, though he's not able to speak his mind in front of him. He is relieved when Big Daddy visit him after breaking out of prison, repentant for his actions to his son, while also proud of him, much to Johnny's happiness, allowing him to carry on with his singing career.

Biography

Sing

The son of a mobster, Johnny is expected to follow in his father's criminal footsteps. However, his true passion is singing, which he initially doesn't have the confidence to admit to his father due to fear of his father's disapproval.

When he finally decides to take a chance to follow his dream by auditioning for Buster Moon's singing competition, he goes to the audition and sings "Stay With Me". After finishing his audition, he runs past Meena and wishes her good luck. At first, Johnny is passed over in favor of Daniel, but when Buster is unable to talk to the giraffe without a megaphone, he changes his mind. During the competition, Johnny takes every measure to keep his involvement with it a secret from Big Daddy. This causes tension for Johnny as he simultaneously commits himself to relearning the piano and practicing his getaway driving for his father's upcoming heist.

Because the day of the heist coincides with a rehearsal, Johnny leaves his post, his speeding to the Moon Theater causing two cars to collide. Buster finds his performance of "All of Me" fairly lackluster and suggests that he play a backup song, which he admits he hasn't practiced for yet. Unfortunately, he becomes stuck in a traffic jam built up from the earlier car accident. With Johnny's absence, Big Daddy and his gang are caught and arrested.

Visiting Big Daddy in prison, Johnny finally confesses that he wants to be a singer, not a criminal. He is devastated when Big Daddy disowns him, even though Johnny swears to bail him out. At night, Johnny breaks into the Moon Theater to steal Buster's prize money for the bail payment, but has a change of heart after glancing at Buster's callback list and seeing that Buster labeled him a "Natural born singer". Instead, he asks Miss Crawly to give him extra piano lessons.

Johnny's goal to free his dad is dashed when he and the other contestants learn Buster lied about the prize money, shortly before a flood destroys the theater. Afterwards, he tries to visit his father in prison again without success. However, Johnny (along with the other singers, except Mike) finds it in his heart to forgive Buster, and states his desire to perform even without a prize. In order to cheer Buster up, Johnny also tells him that everyone has lost something while doing the competition, using his family troubles as an example. He helps the others build a stage for a show in the theater ruins, while continuing to practice his piano lessons.

In Buster's concert, Johnny is the second to perform after Rosita. He plays the piano while singing his backup song, Elton John's "I'm Still Standing", and pulls off a great performance. His triumph is bittersweet, however, as Johnny is still sad that his bond with his father is beyond repair. He turns out to be wrong when Big Daddy (after seeing him perform on the prison TV) breaks out of his cell and comes to the theater to reconcile with his son and tell Johnny how proud he is of him and apologize to Johnny for selfishly disowning him. With the cops closing in, Big Daddy takes his leave to return to prison, with Johnny promising to visit him often. Johnny, having successfully fulfilled his dream of becoming a singer with his father's acceptance, attends the grand opening of the New Moon Theater.

Love At First Sight

Johnny is practicing a song on the piano when Miss Crawly's nostalgic daydream is interrupted by Johnny banging on the keys, spooking her, and causing her to fall down. I m still standing gorilla helping her up, she tells him that that song reminds her of the good old days of romance and dancing, and how she wishes to be young and in love again. Johnny assures her that it's never too late for love and introduces her to online dating. He helps create a profile for her, and is somewhat shocked at how quick it was for people to start sending messages.

Happy Holidays From Sing

Johnny has fun at the ice rink while "Sleigh Ride" plays. After Gunter switches the music track with his holiday dance remix of "Groove Is in the Heart", he pulls Johnny into freshly cleared space on the rink to dance. Johnny then performs a short bit of break-dancing. At the end, Johnny poses with the rest of the Sing cast.

Sing (McDonald's Happy Meal toy promotion)

Johnny is seen briefly ordering a Happy Meal at McDonald's in song form.

Sing on Tour

Mizuki comes across Johnny struggling with a piano to be used in his upcoming performance; attached to his instrument is a device meant to help the piano automatically roll onstage, but it is malfunctioning. Mizuki is able to fix the machine by whacking it a few times with a wrench.

Does Taron Egerton sing in Rocketman?

6 May 2021, 15:26

Photo: Courtesy of Paramount Pictures.

It’s hard to argue Rocketman star Taron Egerton’s talent. In the film, he throws himself into the tender story of Elton John without fear, even when it means going into the depths of the biopics subjects depression. Early in the film, John lists all his vices while in rehab — from "weed and prescription drugs to anger management."

It’s a heartrending film. And, at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, it got a four-minute standing ovation and made John, who was in the audience, cry.

Egerton graduated from England’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art — one of the oldest schools in the world, which gives students training in film, theater, and television — in 2012. Egerton went on to break out internationally in Kingsman: The Secret Service, with Colin Firth. In a funny twist, he actually used John’s “Your Song” as his audition piece for the prestigious academy.

Unlike Rami Malek’s Oscar-winning turn in Bohemian Rhapsody, Egerton took over the vocals on all of John’s iconic songs. He explained to the New York Post that John, who executive produced the movie (along with husband David Furnish), told him not to try and mimic his sound. “He wanted me to make the songs my own,” Egerton said. “He wanted me to be creative with them rather than just copying him.”

In a canny preview of Egerton’s talent, and presumably to garner interest for the film, the two took the stage together to perform John’s hit “Tiny Dancer” during the annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party last year.

And, when Egerton was asked if he would sing one of John’s songs at the event, he agreed to do so only if John accompanied him on the piano, reported Entertainment Weekly. He opened by saying, “It’s funny how life turns out, isn’t it?”

An interesting indicator that Egerton would be a perfect fit for the role was a film that came out around the same time as Kingsman. That’s right, Egerton had already performed an Elton John song on the big screen. He just happened to do so as a gorilla named Johnny in the 2016 animated feature Sing, singing “I’m Still Standing.”
