“BONGO ROCK” PERCUSSIONIST PRESTON EPPS DIES

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ The man who made “Bongo Rock” a hit has died. The Hollywood Reporter says percussionist Preston Epps has died of natural causes in Los Angeles, according to his daughter. Epps was 88. Epps had only one hit, the instrumental “Bongo Rock,” which hit No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. He followed it up with songs like “Bongo Bongo Bongo,” “Bongo in the Congo,” “Bongo Rocket” and “Bongo Boogie.” Epps also was the main percussionist on “Earth Angel” by The Penguins. He later toured with Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, Little Richard and Sam Cooke, among others. He’s credited with discovering Lou Rawls at Pandora’s Box, the nightclub he managed in Los Angeles. Epps last performed in 2014.

THE VERVE REGAINS RIGHTS TO “BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY”

LONDON (AP) _ Twenty-two years after The Verve released “Bittersweet Symphony,” frontman and songwriter Richard Ashcroft can finally call it his song. Ashcroft tells the BBC Mick Jagger and Keith Richards signed over their publishing rights to the song to him last month. He calls it “a truly kind and magnanimous thing for them to do.” “Bittersweet Symphony” sampled an orchestral version of the Rolling Stones song “The Last Time.” A legal battle resulted in Ashcroft having to hand over 100 percent of the royalties for “Bittersweet Symphony” to ABKCO Records, with Jagger and Richards getting song credit. Ashcroft says his gripe was with Stones manager Allen Klein for pursuing the lawsuit, rather than the Stones. Ashcroft says the Stones “always have been the greatest rock and roll band in the world.”

RIHANNA MAKES HER ENTRANCE INTO THE PARIS FASHION INDUSTRY

PARIS (AP) _ The fashion industry in Paris is dominated by white men _ which is why it’s such a big deal that Rihanna has entered the game. She has become the first black woman to launch a major Parisian fashion house. Rihanna has teamed with luxury group LVMH to launch her Fenty fashion label, which is available for sale in Paris and will be online by Wednesday. It’s not just her demographics that are raising eyebrows. Rihanna has no formal design training. She’s also forgoing the usual fashion season previewed designs in favor of a “See-Now-Wear-Now” model. Rihanna admits she’s feeling the pressure, but as she puts it, “It’s not like crumbling pressure, but it’s like: ‘You better get it good, girl.’”

R.I.P. Melvin Edmonds of After 7

(May 19, 2019) We are extremely sad to inform SoulTrackers of the death of After 7 cofounder and co-lead singer Melvin Edmonds, after a long illness. The talented Edmonds provided the expressive counterpoint to brother Kevon‘s sweet first tenor leads on a string of great hits for the trio during the 80s and 90s. They became a fan favorite and a group that survived much to continue to remain relevant to this day.

At Indiana University, brothers Kevon and Melvin Edmonds teamed with college mate Keith Mitchell to form After 7 and played local gigs in the Bloomington area. Meanwhile, the Edmonds' older brother, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, became part of the funk group the Deele, and ultimately joined with bandmate L.A. Reid to become the top songwriting and production team in modern music.  Together LA and Babyface worked with Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston and dozens of other top acts, while Babyface also forged a successful solo singing career.

In 1988 Babyface and Reid entered into an artist development agreement with Virgin Records and approached After 7 about signing with the label. With some trepidation the trio, by then in their 30s, signed, and the resulting self-titled debut recording became a smash on both Soul and Pop radio, yielding three hits, including the chart topper "Ready or Not." After 7 went on to become a consistent, if understated, charting act, scoring moderate hits with "Nights Like This" (from The Five Heartbeats soundtrack) and a nice cover of "Baby I'm For Real" before landing a major crossover hit in 1995 when Babyface returned to the production and songwriting helm with the wonderful midtempo number "Til You Do Me Right."

While the group continued to score gold albums, by 1996 they were in their 40s and were considered an "adult" act. Their relationship with Virgin soured and, shockingly, After 7 members found themselves unsigned. Babyface brought brothers Melvin and Kevon together with K-Ci and JoJo to form the one song group Milestone, which landed in the top 10 with the exquisite "I Care About You" for the Soul Food soundtrack. But After 7 soon split, with Melvin (who had had some friction with the other two group members) taking a job as a truck driver and Keith working construction.

Kevon Edmonds went solo and released the moderately successful solo album 24-7. During his tour he brought on Melvin's son, Jason, to sing backup and help on some of the After 7 covers. This ultimately led to a reunion of sorts in 2009, Keith joined Kevon and Jason Edmonds to tour as a new version of After 7. Sadly, Melvin suffered a stroke in 2011, which prevented him from considering rejoining the group.

In 2015, After 7 was back recording a new album, with all four members aboard. "I Want You," recorded with the help of Babyface and Darryl Simmons, peaked at #6 on the Urban AC Charts. The four member ensemble released a second single “Let Me Know” in June 2016 to similar success, and followed in October of that year with Timeless, an artistic triumph that found the group sounding better than ever. It led to them winning SoulTracks Readers' Choice Awards that December for Group of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Let Me Know"), capping a gratifying comeback. I think was also a wonderful last opportunity for Melvin, who was clearly ailing, to perform with his family.

For those of us whose life soundtracks included a number of performances by After 7, this is a particularly hard blow. But both the classic music of After 7 and the tremendous contributions of Melvin Edminds will live on. Rest In Peace, Mr. Edmonds.

Cryin For It lyrics

written by Babyface
lead vocals: Melvin Edmonds, Kevon Edmonds

The first time I saw you
I knew I would fall in love
You filled an empty space in my heart
And that was rather special
Cause I never thought someone
Could make me fall in love from the start
The second time I saw you
I knew that I had been whupped
I could not get you out of my mind
And ever since that moment
Girl I haven't been much good
I won't rest until I know that your're mine

Don't you hear me crying for it
Don't you see my heart's on fire
Don't you feel me dying for it
Give me my hearts desire

The first time that I saw you
I knew that you were the one
You were everything a man could desire
And I've always been the kinda man
To get just what he wants
So please don't make me out as a liar
The second time I saw you
I just had to have you girl
I'd never seen someone look so good
And ever since that day
I just haven't been the same
I want you girl and I want that understood

[Chorus]

And I won't be any good
If I can't have you now
If there's any way you could
Come to me now
I'd give you anything
And I do mean everything
And that means anything you heart desires

[Chorus]

After 7 Makes ‘Timeless’ Return

It’s been more than 20 years since After 7 released a new album. But the group behind such enduring hits as “Heat of the Moment,” “Ready or Not,” “Can’t Stop” and “Nights Like This” hasn’t lost any time returning to the R&B charts.

Two songs from After 7’s newly released album Timeless (eOne, Oct. 14) — “Let Me Know” and “I Want You” — have already placed in the top 10 and top 5, respectively, on the Adult R&B chart. The group goes on to prove that its signature pristine harmonies are still in full effect on such noteworthy album tracks as “Too Late,” “Runnin’ Out” and a cover of the Stylistics gem “Betcha By Golly, Wow.”

Timeless marks both a creative and family reunion for After 7. The album was produced by the group’s longtime creative collaborators Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Daryl Simmons. Originally comprised of Babyface’s brothers Kevon and Melvin Edmonds with Keith Mitchell (cousin of Babyface’s former songwriter/production partner Antonio “L.A.” Reid), the current After 7 lineup features Kevon, Mitchell and Melvin’s son Jason Edmonds. Though he left the group in 1995, Melvin stepped back into the fold to help record Timeless. Also adding to the album’s family affair feel: nephew David Edmonds wrote, produced and sang on the track “Too Late.”

Prior to playing BB King’s in New York this week (Oct. 19) — After 7’s first Big Apple performance as a group in more than 10 years — lead vocalist Kevon talked to Billboard about the group’s momentous return.

On reuniting with Babyface:

This is something that just unfolded. Nothing was planned at all. Babyface had a few songs that didn’t make the cut for his last solo album. So he asked us to try a couple to see what would happen. Going into this, there wasn’t really a question of who to work with. We had to go back to the same well we started with. We knew that whatever we did working with them would be our best effort. And it was extremely important to have trust and had fun in the process.

Not wanting to repeat the past:

When we started out in 1989, we were a fresh, brand new group rolling in the latest Cadillac. But that was then. For us to come back today, we couldn’t be rolling in the latest model Benz, a 750 BMW or Audi. We had to be rolling in a Bentley. Anything else was not going to turn anybody’s head. We kept driving that point home to Kenny in speaking to the caliber of the songs. The songs had to be something that knocks people’s socks off. We didn’t want anything that echoed what came out of our catalog. We didn’t want any association lyrically or melodically to cast a shadow on what we’re doing now. The music we’re creating today stands on its own. It may be reminiscent of what you recall only because our music is timeless.

Returning to the studio for the first time in more than 20 years:

There was a slight undercurrent of nervousness and electricity. It was like we’re in here and really doing this, huh? You don’t even know what you’re going to create or what it’s going to sound like. “I Want You” was the first song we recorded. Daryl and Kenny looked at each other and said, “Damn, they sound just like they used to sound. This is crazy.” Then it was let’s just roll with it and see where it takes us.

Recording again with original member Melvin Edmonds:

Since Melvin was no longer doing this, we checked in with him to see if he was game to work on the album. Without his voice in our signature sound, it would have been cheating our fans. Melvin is on throughout the album. He definitely stepped it up in the studio and gave us his all, bringing a great balance.

Jazmine Sullivan’s sampling of “Ready or Not” in her top 5 adult R&B hit “Let it Burn”:

I love Jazmine’s song and her artistry. She awakened listeners once again to what’s great about timeless music: being able to use something from 25 years ago that Babyface wrote. It also gave us a little bit of attention. Joining her onstage to perform at last year’s Soul Train Awards was a nice moment.

Cryin For It lyrics

written by Babyface
lead vocals: Melvin Edmonds, Kevon Edmonds

The first time I saw you
I knew I would fall in love
You filled an empty space in my heart
And that was rather special
Cause I never thought someone
Could make me fall in love from the start
The second time I saw you
I knew that I had been whupped
I could not get you out of my mind
And ever since that moment
Girl I haven't been much good
I won't rest until I know that your're mine

Don't you hear me crying for it
Don't you see my heart's on fire
Don't you feel me dying for it
Give me my hearts desire

The first time that I saw you
I knew that you were melvin edmonds songs one
You were everything a man could desire
And I've always been the kinda man
To get just what he wants
So please don't make me out as a liar
The second time I saw you
I just had to have you girl
I'd never seen someone look so good
And ever since that day
I just haven't been the same
I want you girl and I want that understood

[Chorus]

And I won't be any good
If I can't have you now
If there's any way you could
Come to me now
I'd give you anything
And I do mean everything
And that means anything you heart desires

[Chorus]

Meanwhile, the Edmonds' older melvin edmonds songs, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, became part of the funk group the Deele, and ultimately joined with bandmate L.A.

With some trepidation the trio, by then in their 30s, signed, and the melvin edmonds songs self-titled debut recording became a smash on both Soul and Pop radio, yielding three hits, including the chart topper "Ready or Not." After 7 went on to become a consistent, if understated, charting act, scoring moderate hits with "Nights Like This" (from The Five Heartbeats soundtrack) and a nice cover of "Baby I'm For Real" before landing a major crossover hit in 1995 when Babyface returned to the production and songwriting helm with the wonderful midtempo number "Til You Do Me Right."

Edmonds.

After 7 Makes ‘Timeless’ Return

It’s been more than 20 years since After 7 released a new album. But the group behind such jose mourinho banana hits as “Heat of the Moment,” “Ready or Not,” “Can’t Stop” and “Nights Like This” hasn’t lost any time returning to the R&B charts.

Anything else was uk phone country code from usa going to turn anybody’s head. We kept driving that point home to Kenny in speaking to the caliber of melvin edmonds songs songs.

Since Melvin was no www prudential com online retirement com doing this, we checked in with him to see if he indigo credit card customer service email game to work on the album.
