Experience What Lake Arrowhead Has to Offer!

Lake Arrowhead History

The history of Lake Arrowhead begins in December of 1890 when the Arrowhead Reservoir Company (ARCo) was incorporated in the state of Kentucky. San Bernardino City Engineer, A.H. Koebig had a plan to capture the immense water shed of the west-end The pinnacles lake arrowhead Bernardino Mountains, and provide it to the valley to the south. He traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio in search of funding and there he found a group of businessmen that financed the ARCo. Major players were James Gamble (of the Proctor and Gamble Soap Co.) and James Edmund Mooney.

When James Mooney died in 1919 the holdings of the Arrowhead Reservoir and Power Company (name changed in 1905) were purchased by a group of nine Los Angeles millionaires. They formed the Arrowhead Lake Company, razed the Little Bear Resort, re-named the lake Lake Arrowhead and constructed the Old Lake Arrowhead Village. The current Lake Arrowhead Village is located on that site with the Casino (or Arcade) the only remaining building from the original old Lake Arrowhead Village.

Information provided by Rim of the World Historical Society.
www.rimoftheworldhistory.com

By the turn of the 20th century, construction had begun on a dam in Little Bear Gorge. The original design, a masonry dam similar to the one that formed Big Bear Lake, was soon found unsuitable. The pinnacles lake arrowhead new design called for a concrete core. With James Mooney leading the way with his leadership and funding, the dam was later completed, and the lake formed was named Little Bear Lake.

The dream of the ARCo to provide water to the community of San Bernardino and surrounding communities ended in 1913 when the Superior Court in San Bernardino ruled that the company could not divert the water shed, which naturally flowed to the north, to those communities in the south. The newly formed lake would soon become a recreational area

Sheriff's helicopter, night-vision goggles used during rescue in Lake Arrowhead

A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s aviation team used night-vision goggles to rescue two lost hikers near the mountain community of Lake Arrowhead.

Hollywood residents Nathan Harrington and Daniella Kelley, both 23, were rescued safely on Saturday night after they got off a hiking trail at Pinnacle Hills, a sheriff's report said.

The Pinnacles are small, granite peaks northwest of Lake Arrowhead and east of Silverwood Lake. Hikers use numerous trails in the area to traverse the desert-like area, according to the Mountain Project website.

All of the non-main trails must be followed carefully as many small use-trails lead off into other areas, the main summit itself, and multiple forested or overgrown areas where no path exists, the website warns.

As darkness fell, Harrington and Kelley could not relocate the main trail, and they became lost. They called 911, requesting help and telling Sheriff's Dispatch they did not have food or water.

After Sheriff’s Desert Patrol Helicopter 40-King-2 was dispatched to the area, the aircrew arrived and located the couple in steep rocky terrain.

The aviation crew attempted to guide the hikers back to the trail. However, the terrain was too steep and dangerous due to darkness. The crew determined a hoist rescue would be needed to get the duo to safety, the report said.

Due to the darkness and mountainous terrain, the aviation crew used night-vision goggles during the hoist rescue.

The 40-King-2 team met with a second Sheriff’s aviation team 40-King-1 and worked to perform the hoist rescue.

The 40-King-2 crew hoisted a deputy down to the couple, where he secured them separately into a rescue harness.

The hikers were then hoisted one at a time to the helicopter, then flown to a nearby field, where they were dropped off and met by a deputy from the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Station near Lake Arrowhead.

The aviation crew returned to the location of the rescue and hoisted the deputy back to the helicopter.

Sheriff’s Aviation Team members who helped with the rescue included deputies Paul Kowalski, Cody Korkotsakis and Cody Manning, according to Sheriff’s spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez.

Since 2017, the Sheriff’s Aviation Unit has averaged 69 hoist rescues per year, Rodriguez said.

Best Things to Do in Lake Arrowhead (a Local’s Guide)

Los Angeles is a place like no other: rich with arts and culture, close to beautiful beaches, national parks, and cozy mountain retreats. One of these mountain resorts is the quaint Lake Arrowhead, just 80 miles away from L.A. downtown. Sitting at an elevation of almost 6,000 feet, Lake Arrowhead is a great resource of recreational activities, a place where you’ll find good restaurants and many things to do and year-round.

things to do in Lake Arrowhead

Overview

A Brief History of the Lake Arrowhead

The history of this lake began in the 1890’s, when a group of entrepreneurs chose the Little Bear Gorge to built a reservoir that would supply water to the valley. When the dam was completed and the lake formed, they named it The pinnacles lake arrowhead Bear Lake.

However, the idea of diverting the water from the area did not sit well with the ranchers on the upper desert. People on this side of the mountain relied on that water for their own domestic use.

The State ruled in the favor of the ranches, so in 1920 Arrowhead Lake Company bought Little Bear Lake and the surrounding land and began developing the area into a resort community.

The name was changed into Lake Arrowhead, deriving from a rock formation in the shape of an arrowhead that sits on the face of the San Bernardino Mountains.

Luxury estates around Lake Arrowhead

The developers build three hotels, a golf course and a club house. The land around the lake was subdivided and sold for private homes. Many Hollywood stars  purchased land here, building gorgeous estates around the north shore area.

What to Expect When Visiting Lake Arrowhead

Building a snowman in winter

Because of its high altitude location, Lake Arrowhead enjoys four distinct seasons which allow a great variety of activities year round. The climate up here is very different from the one in the valley. The summer temperature is about 20 degrees cooler while in winter it regularly drops below freezing.

The average snowfall is 80 inches a year. Snow may start as early as November and last till the end of March. This makes this mountain resort a great escape from the heat and smog of L.A. in summer and one of the most romantic getaways in California.

The beautiful San Bernardino Mountains are a countless resource of recreational activities. From hiking, biking, and horseback riding, to swimming, kayaking, and fishing, you can do just about anything in Lake Arrowhead in summer.

Best Things to Do in Lake Arrowhead

• Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, Swimming, or Water Skiing

The lake waters are exceptionally clear and warm. The swimming season may start as early as June and sometimes extends well into the first two weeks of October.

It’s important to know that this is a private lake and can only be used by the homeowners in Arrowhead Woods, a tract of land that extends about 1 mile perimeter around the lake.

However, if you are a guest of one of the hotels in the resort, or of one the property owners in Arrowhead Woods, you can do any of the water sports above activities.

Also, whether you are a professional or a first timer, McKenzie Water Ski School in the Village caters to all your waterskiing needs.

• Arrowhead Queen Boat Tour

One way to enjoy the splendor and serenity of Lake Arrowhead’s lush forests and sparking water is by taking a narrated tour of the lake aboard the Arrowhead Queen.

Pinnacles is a staging area north of Lake Arrowhead. It is on Hwy 173. From 210 Fwy take State Hwy 18. Head North up the mountain toward Crestline and on to Lake Arrowhead. Turn left at 173 toward Lake Arrowhead. Continue through Arrowhead across the lake and notice the Hospital on the right side of the road on the north side of the lake. You may need it sometime. :)

Image

Continue on 173 another 8 miles of beautiful winding asphalt easy to tow a trailer. Pinnacles Staging is on your left. If you pass a cattle grate or shooting range you went too far.

Image

The staging area driveway is sometimes very very rutted. 4x4 low when pulling a large trailer is a good idea. Right now it is smooth as silk. The staging area has pit toilets, picnic tables & trash cans.

Image

Most of the trails are 50". Please leave your UTVs at home or keep them on forest roads.

2W01 is the only single track left. You cross Deep Creek to get to it. We have adopted 2W01 through the SBNF Adopt-a-trail program. At the top of the trail you must ride across White Mountain which is a very rocky Jeep crawl in places to return the loop to Big Pine Flats where you can take Redonda Ridge (1W17) back or Green Sticker Legal fire roads. 1W17 is the most challenging OHV trail on the mountain and is a total blast.

Image

Make sure you have captain america the first avenger cast list Adventure Pass if you stage at Pinnacles. Costs you $5 per day or $35 per year. You can pick one up at Jensens market on 173. While it's not a camp ground you can get away with staying over night. But keep in mind it is basically a dirt parking lot on top of the mountain.

This is a spot we obviously spend a lot of time. You are always welcome to tag along on one of our rides to learn the trails. and even pitch in on a Trail Work Day if you are into that Giving Backsort of thing. :D

In fact, RIDERS welcomes new people on all of our rides !

When we moved up to Lake Arrowhead last April, I felt like I knew this area so well after having a vacation house here for years. So it was a huge surprise to see the amount of Lake Arrowhead fall colors showing up everywhere. The forest around the lake is dotted everywhere with yellow trees and up close you can see fall foliage of every color. Get the pinnacles lake arrowhead for some of the best fall colors in California.

If this is your first trip, check out this post for the 10 Best Things to do in Lake Arrowhead. You’ll find hotel info, the restaurants you should try and more. If you want to see nearby Big Bear fall foliage, check out these Luxury Cabins in Big Bear for a place to stay. Lake Arrowhead & Big Bear are highlights of the 10 Best Lakes in Southern California.

7 Fun Things to Do in Lake Arrowhead in Fall

Lake Arrowhead Fall Drive

1. Take a Scenic Drive to View Lake Arrowhead Fall Colors

One of the best ways to jump right in is to take a scenic drive around the lake. Right as you head into Blue Jay, you’ll be treated to bursts of color. It’s completely worth making a full lap around the lake and driving up to McKay park to get a bird’s-eye-view. I keep offering to do all the errands so I can see how the leaves look every day!

Lake Arrowhead Fall Foliage

2. Get Out on the Lake

If you are an Arrowhead homeowner and have a boat, you’re probably taking your last ride of the year before taking your boat out of the water. For everyone else, since Arrowhead is a private lake, go for a 45 minute cruise on the Arrowhead Queen. You’ll see each bay and all the Lake Arrowhead fall colors. The captain shares points of interest and funny commentary.

Lake Arrowhead Oktoberfest

3. The Best Lake Arrowhead Fall Event is Oktoberfest

Every weekend from mid September through October, Lake Arrowhead Oktoberfest kicks up the fun at Lake Arrowhead village. Everyone gets festive with lederhosen, dancing, German bier, big pretzels, brats and sauerkraut. It’s a family friendly event during the day with kids games, German bands playing live music and a dance party. At night, the music and dancing continue with beer chugging for adults.

Pumpkins at Santa's Village

4. Take the Kids to Pumpkin in the Pines at Skypark at Santa’s Village

For kids, fall fun is all about the going to the pumpkin patch. The kiddos pick out a pumpkin, then take it to Santa’s Workshop to decorate it. There the pinnacles lake arrowhead tons of activities including face painting, and cookie decorating.

The Halloween theme continues with a Monster Mash skate party, a Halloween bike ride, and a family friendly hike in haunted Fantom Forest. Wrap up your day of fun with live music and a little boogie. Get the schedule here.

Lake Arrowhed Fall Hikes

5. Go For a Lake Arrowhead Fall Hike

The weather for hiking in Lake Arrowhead is perfect in fall. The days are in the 60s and nights average in the 40s. The one thing you have to pay attention to is that sunset is really early – around 6pm. It gets dark quickly when you are surrounded by lots of tall trees and the mountain is adding extra shade. Some great trail to try:

  • Arrowhead Pinnacles – 7 miles and difficult with amazing views
  • Seely Creek Trail also know as Heart Rock (pictured above) – 2 miles out and back
  • Nature Loop at Lake Gregory – 2.5 mile walking path around the lake that’s easy and really peaceful
Big Bear Fall Colors

6. Check Out Big Bear Fall Colors

Take a 45 minute drive along the ridge of the San Bernardino mountains and you’ll see that Big Bear’s Fall colors are beautiful too. The leaves change a little earlier in Big Bear than Lake Arrowhead, probably because it’s about 2,000 feet higher in elevation. You can see colors downtown and hiking but not around the lake as much. Maybe it was better a few weeks earlier.

Either way, the drive to get there is beautiful. I did the Castle Rock hike and it was a little steep but fun. One of my favorite things about hiking in Big Bear are the cool rock formations that are so different than everywhere else.

Lake Gregory Autumn

7. See the Nearby Southern California Lakes

Lake Gregory and Silverwood Lake don’t have the same foliage as Lake Arrowhead because they are at lower elevations but they are still some of the prettiest lakes in Southern California. They also happen to be on the way as you head down the hill.

Lake Gregory, a small lake 20 minutes away from Lake Arrowhead, is kid heaven during summer with an inflatable playground on the water. There’s also fishing, boat rentals, water slides and a nice lake path, perfect for a fall walk. Silverwood Lake is a beautiful drive another 20 minutes down the road.

Have any of you climbed here?

It reminds me a lot of Mnt. Woodson with as good of rock quality as JTree's finest.

The blasts from the nearby shooting range is the only negative thing I can say about it.

I recommend at least checking it out if you live in the area. Good adventure.

Yeah, I've climbed there a few times. Actually, it's alot of fun. I have mostly climbed in the Shooting Gallery, but have also climbed in the Rotten Rock Garden Valley as well. There are some nice climbs there as well. I highly recommend a visit to the area.

Thanks Ammon for bringing up a thread that didn't consist of bashing.

Blasts from the range... hmm that sounds like a summer day at Index! Better than a chain saw in a national park though! I'd imagine that the valley will someday have guns going off to be like the "cowboys" who probably killed a bunch of indians. The excuse will be that it is "history".

10b4me,

Actually, I've only been there a couple of times in the last few days. We went to the Bong both times near the summit ridge. The bushwhacking wasn't bad at all..... but, there's a ton of rock and could imagine it being bad to get to some of the formations.

The Bong has mostly 5.11's and a few 12's and is a really impressive piece of rock. Maybe the reason I'm so impressed is because it's only a few miles down the road from where I live, now.

Well, I better get out there, later.

Cheers, Ammon

AAHHHHH. This area is in the northern San Bernadinos. I went climb here fairly regularily as I live 20 min. away. Came out to try the wave a few days ago .12- roof OW, it kicked my ass (fell 2x), ten min later I puked on the belay ledge. We then went over to King Tut .11- flared squeeze to fists hands fingers and finally a bolted expanding flake, it was great (the bottom was like yos rock). Then over to the Ugly Wall for a few tasty hand cracks. The swack from the Skull to King Tut was awfull and has obviously not been cleared in years but the trail to the skull and ugly wall were easy going. We will need to get a club(ROWCC) trip out there soon to cut trail. Anybody wanna go on wednesday? The Major features are generally well maintained. If you put up a new route email Brad Singer (a poster on this site)as he wrote the guide. All I know about that is new is a 5.10- slab route next to regular guy on Skull, two new routes on the ugly wall 5.10- and 5.10+ no stem?, a route above ugly wall .10c? mantle, then a hard bolted slab? at west point. More????? Well the climbing here is great and their is more. Someone really should do an article about the climbing up here. New areas are being discovered every other month it seems and hundreds of new routes go up (usually ROWCC or Chris Miller.)

Hey Clustiere,

Yep, I'm borrowing my bro's book (by Brad Singer) for this area. I'm still amazed at the potential here.

I've been in JTree over the holidays but before we left I hiked to the summit ridge to have a look. It looked really good but on the way down lost the trail and bushwhacked to get back down to the junction. Hell of an adventure, however.

Sounds like you live nearby. We should hook up, I'm living 4 1/2 miles from the parking area. Lots of snow right now..... but, I bet it melts really fast after this next storm.

Jedi, let me know if you come up tonight. I'd be WAY psyched to meet some local climbers up here.

Pat told me the rattler's are pretty thick when it warms up. I heard a young girl got bit last weekend and had to get life-flighted out. She was probably hiking the summit trail.

WOW!! The place IS amazing if you really look for the gems.... Well, it doesn't hurt to have Pat guide you around either.

Props to Brennan, Kenaga, Odenthal, Tipton, Singer, etc. for putting in so much effort AND money, developing the place!!!

COMMUNITY EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Because of its central location in Southern California , day trips as well as overnight stays are easily accessible. There are enough attractions to keep you busy.

No matter how you wish to spend your vacation, on the go or relax in the peace and quiet of our main attraction - the National Forest - Lake Arrowhead is ideal for everyone. The following is a list of our attractions.

Koebig had a plan to capture the immense water shed of the west-end San Bernardino Mountains, and provide it to the valley to the south.

The new design called for a concrete core.

Please note: It is recommended that youngsters wear Coast Guard approved lifejackets at all times when anywhere near the water.

How can you get your boat on the Lake? Follow these steps to register a new boat or to re-register your boat for the current year. Enjoy the water!

Step 1. MEMBERSHIP
Only ALA Members may launch a boat. Be sure to purchase a Membership along with or prior to registering your boat.

Step 2. OWNERSHIP
The owner of the property in Arrowhead Woods must be the Member on ALA records and must be the owner on title of the boat.

Step 3. DMV REGISTRATION
Submit a copy of your current DMV registration. Current DMV stickers must be displayed on both sides of bow.

Current DMV registration must be on record in the ALA office. California DMV must be renewed in odd years: 2013, 2015, 2017, etc. If the DMV registration of your boat is listed as expired on your account, it means that we have not yet received your renewed information. You must send a current DMV registration before a boat decal will be sent to you.

Step 4. INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
Submit proof of proper insurance.

Power and sail boats: A current certificate of insurance must be on file in the ALA office naming Arrowhead Lake Association as "Additional Insured." ALA does not automatically receive renewed certificates so please remit a copy of your current insurance for ALA to have on file. If your insurance for your boat is listed as expired on your account, it means that we have not yet received your renewed information. You must send a current certificate of insurance with the following requirements before a boat decal will be sent to you.

The Arrowhead Lake Association must be named as "Additional Insured" on your policy.
Certificates must show: Name of insured, Policy number, Policy period, Limits of liability coverage, CF number, Make and Length of boat(s).
Liability insurance in the amount of $500,000 combined single limit is required.
Water skiing coverage shall be included in your policy.
Your policy shall have a thirty (30) day prior written notice of cancellation given to ALA.
Boats without motors can be covered by your homeowner's insurance policy. Please send a copy of the declarations page of your homeowner's insurance for our records.

Step 5. BOAT INFORMATION
Ensure your boat meets the size requirements of ALA and the State of Califiornia. Power and sail boats must be a minimum of 12 feet in length with a maximum length of 26 feet. Small boats are non-motorized vessels such as kayaks, canoes and pedal boats and must be less than 12 feet in length.

The maximum number of boats (including power, sail and small boats) that may be registered per property is five (5).

Step 6. ALA REGISTRATION FEES
The current year's registration fees are determined by the Board of Directors and appear on the Fee Schedule.

Step 7. BOAT DECAL

All ALA fees must be paid before a decal can be issued to launch your boat or moor your boat in a slip.

Fees include:

  • Dock/Slip Right Membership,

  • General and Beach Club Membership,

  • Boat Registration and Any Late fees.

  • A decal is required to launch your boat or moor it in a boat slip. Your ALA decal must be displayed on starboard bow or mast. You will be issued a Day Use decal for your power or sail boat if you do not own a dock and are not renting a dock. For dock owners and renters, you will be issued an overnight decal for your power or sail boat. Day Use boaters may not moor their boat overnight. Small boat decals will be issued for small non-motored boats.

Step 8. BOAT OPERATOR LICENSE
A valid ALA boat operator license is required to operate ANY vessel on Lake
Arrowhead including small boats such as kayaks and canoes. The ALA Lake Safety Test must be submitted for all new and renewed licenses. The fee is $15.00 for the license. Your online Member Account will show all the licenses and expirations on your account.

Step 9. LAUNCH YOUR BOAT
To launch your boat, view the launch ramp Hours of Operation. All boats will undergo a Quagga and Zebra mussel inspection at time of launch and removal from the lake. If you are returning your boat to Lake Arrowhead and the inspection band remains intact and undamaged, you may launch without an inspection. Please bring your boat to the ramp CLEAN, DRAINED and DRY. Your help in keeping Lake Arrowhead free from these invasive species is greatly appreciated.

Step 10. BOAT REGISTRATION RULES
Finally, review the Boat Registration Rules for full details of what is required by boat owners.

Get ready for some of the best fall colors in California.

There are tons of activities including face painting, and cookie decorating.
