A new map by YouGov reveals the boundaries between “dinner England” and “tea England”

New YouGov analysis among more than 42,000 English people reveals the real North/South divide: what people call their main evening meal.

Across England as a whole, the majority (57%) call it “dinner”, while just over a third (36%) opt for “tea”. The remainder either call it something else (including 5% who say “supper”) or answered “don’t know”.

However, despite dinner’s overall victory, the data shows there are clear geographical differences. Breaking down the results by county reveals a stark North/South divide, with “dinner” the winner in the South and “tea” being top in the North.

“Dinner” is most entrenched in the Home Counties, with the residents of East Sussex, Essex and Kent being the most likely to favour it. By contrast, those in Greater Manchester, Tyne and Wear and Merseyside are most likely to say “tea”.

The contest is tightest in the Midlands, with people in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Herefordshire and Shropshire being marginally more likely (0-10 percentage points) to favour tea, while dinner is the marginally more popular term in Worcestershire (as well as Bristol further to the south).

Whether you say “dinner” or “tea” is no longer really a class distinction

While some have suggested that the dinner/tea debate is driven by class, YouGov data reveals this isn’t the case.

While middle class Northerners are nine percentage points more likely to say “dinner” rather than “tea” when compared with their working class counterparts (37% vs 28%), “tea” is still chosen by the majority of people in both classes (58% among middle class and 67% among working class Northerners).

Among Southerners there is barely a class difference at all. Only three to four percentage points separate the two groups, with 74% of middle class and 70% of working class Southerners opting for “dinner”.

In the midst of last year, when we began to imagine what Eleven Madison Park would be like after the pandemic – when we started to think about food in creative ways again – we realized that not only has the world changed, but that we have changed as well. We have always operated with sensitivity to the impact we have on our surroundings, but it was becoming clearer that the current food system is simply not sustainable, in so many ways.

The pandemic brought our industry to its knees. We kept a small team employed, and with their remarkable effort, in collaboration with the nonprofit Rethink Food, we prepared close to a million meals for those experiencing food insecurity in New York. Through this work, I experienced the magic of food in a whole new way, and I also saw a different side of our city. Today I love New York more than ever.

It was clear to me then that this work must become a cornerstone of our restaurant. Therefore, we’ve evolved our business model.

Now, at Eleven Madison Park, every dinner purchased allows us to provide five meals to food-insecure New Yorkers. This food is being delivered by Eleven Madison Truck, which is operated by our staff in partnership with Rethink. We’ve created a circular ecosystem where our guests, our team, and our suppliers all participate.

After everything we have experienced, it was clear that we couldn’t open the same restaurant in early June.

With that in mind, we made the decision to serve a plant-based menu. We asked ourselves: What are the most delicious aspects of our dishes, and how could we achieve the same level of flavor and texture without meat?

We’ve been working tirelessly to immerse ourselves in this cuisine, and I find myself most moved and inspired by dishes that center impeccably-prepared vegetables. This decision was inspired by the challenge to get to know our ingredients more deeply, and to push ourselves creatively. Regardless, it’s crucial to us that no matter the ingredients, the dish must live up to some of my favorites of the past, and the reputation we’ve created for ourselves here.

I won’t lie, at times I woke up in the middle of night thinking about the risk we were taking abandoning dishes that once defined us. But then I returned to the kitchen, and to our team.

We obsessed over making the most flavorful vegetable broths and stocks. Our days were, and are, consumed by developing fully plant-based milks, butters and creams. We explored fermentation, and began to understand that time is one of the most precious ingredients. What at first felt limiting began to feel freeing, and we were only scratching the surface.

It is time to redefine luxury as an experience that serves a higher purpose and maintains a genuine connection to the community.

A restaurant experience is about more than what’s on the plate, and we are thrilled to be able to share the incredible possibilities of plant-based cuisine.

The most exciting time in restaurants is still to come. The essence of Eleven Madison Park is stronger than it has ever been, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you.

Why 5:30 Is the Ultimate Dining Time

I want to let you in on a little secret: Everyone clamoring for a 7pm or 8pm dinner reservation is an idiot. It might seem like the optimal time to dine -- not too early, not too late, very Goldilocks in nature -- but it’s actually one of the worst times to visit a restaurant. The time everyone should actually be fighting over 5:30pm. No, seriously.

Stick with me here. It might seem like the time only your grandma and grandpa would prefer, but in their infinite wisdom earned by living many decades of life, they are also right about eating dinner at 5:30. I have spent many months crisscrossing the country, eating at hundreds of restaurants to put together lists like this, and I can say the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the early bird really does get the worm, which in this case means the early diner really gets the better meal.

The first step to enjoying a dinner out is to actually get a table. As restaurant culture grows more and more pervasive, it is becoming harder and harder to get seats at beloved or deeply trendy spots. Call a popular spot for seats, especially for a Friday or Saturday night, and it will be nearly impossible to snag a table for 7 or 8 unless you’ve somehow managed to call months in advance. (But who really knows what they will want for dinner nine Fridays from now?) More often than not, these restaurants will have a 5:30 seat available, however. And if they don’t take reservations, walking in at 5:30 means they will likely be able to seat you right away. Walk in at 7pm and you might not be eating until 9pm at the earliest. Who doesn’t want the freedom to eat wherever they want to eat?

People often compare the workings of a restaurant to a finely choreographed dance, and if that really is the case, wouldn’t you want to watch a performance where the dancers are not tired? Dining at 5:30 has several advantages -- the restaurant’s staff being at their freshest might be the greatest one. Most restaurants begin their dinner service around 5pm, which means by 5:30, your server has maybe helped a handful of tables. They are warmed-up, but not yet exhausted. This means they have time to answer every single one of your questions about a menu because they aren’t trying to manage 18 different tables at various stages of their meal at the same time. Not-yet-exhausted servers means they likely will not forget anything like a refill of mayo for your fries or the two extra forks you want so you can all split the linguini you ordered, even though everyone at the table is technically on the keto diet.

The same goes for the kitchen staff. They aren’t 90 orders deep into the night, meaning they aren’t running behind. Your food will more often than not, come out quickly, and exactly as your ordered it. There is nothing worse than sitting down to dinner at 7, starving, and then having to wait an hour for your meal to finally hit the table because the kitchen is so slammed. Eating at 5:30 also guarantees that the kitchen is not out of any ingredient yet, which means you can get a double order of the squid special that you’ve been eyeing and no one will tell you those dreaded words, “Sorry, we no longer have that.”

It’s basically the restaurant equivalent of flying business class instead of economy.

Dining at 5:30 not only means that you get to eat exactly what you want to eat, but it also means you get to hear your dining companions. As restaurants have moved away from the white tablecloth model and become more relaxed and casual spaces with minimalist cement walls and wooden benches, they have become louder and louder. If you try to dine at a packed restaurant when it is in full swing, it’s likely that you are going to strain to hear your companions, shouting “What?” between every other bite. At 5:30, dining rooms are not completely empty -- also a weirdly disarming scenario -- but they are not overly full. It’s easy to carry on a conversation without feeling like you might lose your voice the next day. And you aren’t forced to overhear the conversation of the table next to you because so many diners are packed in so tight. It’s basically the restaurant equivalent of flying business class instead of economy.

And though this may be the most cringe-worthy reason, in this heavily Instagrammed world, dining at 5:30 means you also have access to the best light. It’s no secret that food looks better when photographed in natural light, but eat at 7 or 8 and it’s most likely going to be dark outside, which means you are left to either use the flash on your phone to take a photo (something most people cannot pull off) or you just can’t post a picture of your meal because it is too dim. The added bonus of the restaurant being emptier at 5:30 is that there are fewer people in the dining room to witness you standing in a ridiculous pose or running your plate over from the table to the counter by the large window to get that Instagram-worthy photo.

Best of all, dining at 5:30 means you can have a two-hour long leisurely dinner and still have the rest of your night left ahead of you. It means that not only did you get to go out to eat, you get to also binge-watch four episodes the best new show on Netflix, or hit Trader Joe’s to purchase several new snacks, or KonMari your your closet and maybe your kitchen and still be in bed by midnight at the latest. Dining at 5:30 -- the ultimate productivity hack.

A typical British meal for dinner is "meat and two veg". We put hot brown gravy, (traditionally made from the juices of the roast meat, but more often today from a packet!) on the meat and usually the vegetables. One of the vegetables is almost always potatoes.

Traditionally it consists of roast meat, (cooked in the oven for about two hours), two different kinds of vegetables and potatoes with a Yorkshire pudding. The most common joints are beef, lamb or pork; chicken is also popular.

When To Eat Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Keeping track of what you’re supposed to eat to stay healthy can already be overwhelming, but it turns out that when you eat what can also be important for keeping your weight in control and for warding off chronic disease.

According to recent data, sales for breakfast items are passing those for lunch and dinner and plenty of restaurants are now offering breakfast fare all day long. Basically, eating the morning meal has never been easier. It also turns out that Mom was right: you should eat breakfast. And if you don’t believe Mom, a growing body of studies shows that a good meal in the morning can help your body prepare for the day to come, and lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. But what about the rest of the day’s meals? Here’s what nutrition experts say about the best times to eat and why.

Morning
Don’t skip breakfast. Reporting in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, Harvard School of Public Health researchers studied the health outcomes of 26,902 male health professionals ages 45 to 82 over a 16-year period. They discovered that the men who skipped breakfast had a 27% higher risk of heart attack or death from heart disease than those who honored the morning meal. According to the scientists, skipping breakfast may make you hungrier and more likely to eat larger meals, which leads to a surge in blood sugar. Such spikes can pave the way for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, all risk factors that can snowball into a heart attack.

Pass on the pastry. Eating in the morning — and what you eat — is important for setting your blood-sugar pattern for the rest of the day. “If you eat something that is whole grain and has some fat and protein to it, your blood sugar is going to rise slowly and go down slowly. If you eat something refined, like an overly sweet cinnamon roll, that’s the worst thing you can eat,” says Judy Caplan, a registered dietitian nutritionist for the Academy of Nutrition and What time is dinner in usa. “You get an insulin [spike], and [then] your blood sugar drops too low so you get hungry again. That’s why people get into a cycle of overeating junk.”

To ease your body into a more consistent blood-sugar pattern, try some oatmeal, whole-wheat toast with almond butter, or an omelette with spinach and avocado. If you really want to have some toast, experts tell TIME that you should look for breads that include “sprouted” or “stoneground” grains and that list whole grains as one of the first items in an ingredients label. Afternoon

Fueling up makes sense earlier in the day, when your body needs the most calories for energy. That’s why in many European countries, the largest meal of the day occurs in the afternoon. “Ideally, you want to give yourself fuel before you do harder labor,” says Caplan.

If you’re used to eating a smaller meal for lunch and a larger meal later, you can still fill up with a hearty meal that has significantly fewer calories. “A fairly large meal [that] is full of salad and vegetables [is] big in volume but light in calories,” says Caplan.

Evening
Don’t overdo it. Calories get burned up no matter when you eat them, so theoretically it’s O.K. to eat after dark. But if you eat a heavy dinner, you’re not as likely to get rid of those calories before you turn in. “What you don’t burn off is more likely to be stored as fat, as you become less active toward the is grated parmesan cheese bad for you of the day,” says Tracy Lockwood, a registered dietitian at F-Factor Nutrition. “Eating too close to bedtime increases your blood sugar and insulin, which causes you to have a hard time falling asleep. There’s another reason that late-night eating, after dinner, isn’t a good idea. Keep it light. “If you go to Europe and places where there is not as much obesity as the rest of the world, people eat very late and they’re not necessarily overweight. That’s because they are walking everywhere and they are typically not eating a huge and heavy meal,” says Caplan. “Instead, it may be avocado and toast with a side of soup.”

There’s clearly no formula for healthy eating that applies to everyone for maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding illness, but paying attention to both what and when you eat might be a good place to start.

I want to let you in on a little secret: Everyone clamoring for a 7pm or 8pm dinner reservation is an idiot. It might seem like the optimal time to dine -- not too early, not too late, very Goldilocks in nature -- but it’s actually one of the worst times to visit a restaurant. The time everyone should actually be fighting over 5:30pm. No, seriously.

Stick with me here. It might seem like the time only your grandma and grandpa would prefer, but in their infinite wisdom earned by living many decades of life, they are also right about eating dinner at 5:30. I have spent many months crisscrossing the country, eating at hundreds of restaurants to put together lists like this, and I can say the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the early bird really does get the worm, which in this case means the early diner really gets the better meal.

The first step to enjoying a dinner out is to actually get a table. As restaurant culture grows more and more pervasive, it is becoming harder and harder to get seats at beloved or deeply trendy spots. Call a popular spot for seats, especially for a Friday or Saturday night, and it will be nearly impossible to snag a table for 7 or 8 unless you’ve somehow managed to call months in advance. (But who really knows what they will want for dinner nine Fridays from now?) More often than not, these restaurants will have a 5:30 seat available, however. And if they don’t take reservations, walking in at 5:30 means they will likely be able to seat you right away. Walk in at 7pm and you might not be eating until 9pm at the earliest. Who doesn’t want the freedom to eat wherever they want to eat?

People often compare the workings of a restaurant to a finely choreographed dance, and if that really is the case, wouldn’t you want to watch a performance where the dancers are not tired? Dining at 5:30 has several advantages -- the restaurant’s staff being at their freshest might be the greatest one. Most restaurants begin their dinner service around 5pm, which means by 5:30, your server has maybe helped a handful of tables. They are warmed-up, but not yet exhausted. This means they have time to answer every single one of your questions about a menu because they aren’t trying to manage 18 different tables at various stages of their meal at the same time. Not-yet-exhausted servers means they likely will not forget anything like a refill of mayo for your fries or the two extra forks you want so you can all split the linguini you ordered, even though everyone at the table is technically on the keto diet.

The same goes for the kitchen staff. They aren’t 90 orders deep into the night, meaning they aren’t running behind. Your food will more often than not, come out quickly, and exactly as your ordered it. There is nothing worse than sitting down to dinner at 7, starving, and then having to wait an hour for your meal to finally hit the table because the kitchen is so slammed. Eating at 5:30 also guarantees that the kitchen is not out of any ingredient yet, which means you can get a double order of the squid special that you’ve been eyeing and no one will tell you those dreaded words, “Sorry, we no longer have that.”

It’s basically the restaurant equivalent of flying business class instead of economy.

Dining at 5:30 not only means that you get to eat exactly what you want to eat, but it also means you get to hear your dining companions. As restaurants have moved away from the white tablecloth model and become more relaxed and casual spaces with minimalist cement walls and wooden benches, they have become louder and louder. If you try to dine at a packed restaurant when it is in full swing, it’s likely that you are going to strain to hear your companions, shouting “What?” between every other bite. At 5:30, dining rooms are not completely empty -- also a weirdly disarming scenario -- but they are not overly full. It’s easy to carry on a conversation without feeling like you might lose your voice the next day. And you aren’t forced to overhear the conversation of the table next to you because so many diners are packed in so tight. It’s basically the restaurant equivalent of flying business class instead of economy.

And though this may be the most cringe-worthy reason, in this heavily Instagrammed world, dining at 5:30 means you also have access to the best light. It’s no secret that food looks better when photographed in natural light, but eat at 7 or 8 and it’s most likely going to be dark outside, which means you are left to either use the flash on your phone to take a photo (something most people cannot pull off) or you just can’t post a picture of your meal because it is too dim. The added bonus of the restaurant being emptier at 5:30 is that there are fewer people in the dining room to witness you standing in a ridiculous pose or running your plate over from the table to the counter by the large window to get that Instagram-worthy photo.

Best of all, dining at 5:30 means you can have a two-hour long leisurely dinner and still have the rest of your night left ahead of you. It means that not only did you get to go out to eat, you get to also binge-watch four episodes the best new show on Netflix, or hit Trader Joe’s to purchase several new snacks, or KonMari your your closet and maybe your kitchen and still be in bed by midnight at the latest. Dining at 5:30 -- the ultimate productivity hack.

In the midst of last year, when we began to imagine what Eleven Madison Park would be like after the pandemic – when we started to think about food in creative ways again – we realized that not only has the world changed, but that we have changed as well. We have always operated with sensitivity to the impact we have on our surroundings, but it was becoming clearer that the current food system is simply not sustainable, in so many ways.

The pandemic brought our industry to its knees. We kept a small team employed, and with their remarkable effort, in collaboration with the nonprofit Rethink Food, we prepared close to a million meals for those experiencing food insecurity in New York. Through this work, I experienced the magic of food in a whole new way, and I also saw a different side of our city. Today I love New York more than ever.

It was clear to me then that this work must become a cornerstone of our restaurant. Therefore, we’ve evolved our business model.

Now, at Eleven Madison Park, every dinner purchased allows us to provide five meals to food-insecure New Yorkers. This food is being delivered by Eleven Madison Truck, which is operated by our staff in partnership with Rethink. We’ve created a circular ecosystem where our guests, our team, and our suppliers all participate.

After everything we have experienced, it was clear that we couldn’t open the same restaurant in early June.

With that in mind, we made the decision to serve a plant-based menu. We asked ourselves: What are the most delicious aspects of our dishes, and how could we achieve the same level of flavor and texture without meat?

We’ve been working tirelessly to immerse ourselves in this cuisine, and I find myself most moved and inspired by dishes that center impeccably-prepared vegetables. This decision was inspired by the challenge to get to know our ingredients more deeply, and to push ourselves creatively. Regardless, it’s crucial to us that no matter the ingredients, the dish must live up to some of my favorites of the past, and the reputation we’ve created for ourselves here.

I won’t lie, at times I woke up in the middle of night thinking about the risk we were taking abandoning dishes that once defined us. But then I returned to the kitchen, and to our team.

We obsessed over making the most flavorful vegetable broths and stocks. Our days were, and are, consumed by developing fully plant-based milks, butters and creams. We explored fermentation, and began to understand that time is one of the most precious ingredients. What at first felt limiting began to feel freeing, and we were only scratching the surface.

It is time to redefine luxury as an experience that serves a higher purpose and maintains a genuine connection to the community.

A restaurant experience is about more than what’s on the plate, and we are thrilled to be able to share the incredible possibilities of plant-based cuisine.

The most exciting time in restaurants is still to come. The essence of Eleven Madison Park is stronger than it has ever been, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you.

Dinner time or tea time? It depends on where you live

A new map by YouGov reveals the boundaries between “dinner England” and “tea England”

New YouGov analysis among more than 42,000 English people reveals the real North/South divide: what people call their main evening meal.

Across England as a whole, the majority (57%) call it “dinner”, while just over a third (36%) opt for “tea”. The remainder either call it something else (including 5% who say “supper”) or answered “don’t know”.

However, despite dinner’s overall victory, the data shows there are clear geographical differences. Breaking down the results by county reveals a stark North/South divide, with “dinner” the winner in the South and “tea” being top in the North.

“Dinner” is most entrenched in the Home Counties, with the residents of East Sussex, Essex and Kent being the most likely to favour it. By contrast, those in Greater Manchester, Tyne and Wear and Merseyside are most likely to say “tea”.

The contest is tightest in the Midlands, with people in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Herefordshire and Shropshire being marginally more likely (0-10 percentage points) to favour tea, while dinner is the marginally more popular term in Worcestershire (as well as Bristol further to the south).

While some have suggested that the dinner/tea debate is driven by class, YouGov data reveals this isn’t the case.

While middle class Northerners are nine percentage points more likely to say “dinner” rather than “tea” when compared with their working class counterparts (37% vs 28%), “tea” is still chosen by the majority of people in both classes (58% among middle class and 67% among working class Northerners).

Among Southerners there is barely a class difference at all. Only three to four percentage points separate the two groups, with 74% of middle class and 70% of working class Southerners opting for “dinner”.

Evening meal

Supper was originally a secondary lighter eveningmeal. The main meal of the day, called dinner, used to be served closer to what is known as lunchtime, around the middle of the day, but crept later over the centuries, mostly over the course of the 19th century. When dinner was still at the early time, eating a lighter supper in the evening was very common; it was not always the last meal of the day, as there might be a tea later. Reflecting the typical custom of 17th century elites, Louis XIV dined at noon, with a supper at 10pm.[1] Even when dinner was in the early evening, supper was served at, or on return from, a ball, and might be after other evening excursions. At an English ball in 1791, supper was served to 140 guests at 1:00am.[2] They would all have had dinner at home many hours earlier, before coming out. Other, grander, balls served supper even later, up to 3:30 am., at a London ball given in 1811 by the Duchess of Bedford.[3]

The modern usage of "supper" varies considerably; sometimes supper is still used to describe a light snack or meal in the evening, either after or instead of dinner, but often it replaces dinner as the term for the main evening meal.

Etymology[edit]

The term is derived from the French souper, which is used for this meal in Canadian French, Swiss French, and in Belgian French. It is related to soup. It is also related to the Scandinavian words for soup, soppa or suppe and the German word for soup, Suppe. The Oxford English Dictionary, however, suggests that the root, sup, remains obscure in origin.[4]

Modern usage[edit]

In modern usage, "supper" may refer to, on largely class-based distinctions, either a late-evening snack (working- and middle-class usage) or else to make a distinction between "supper" as an informal family meal (which would be eaten in the kitchen or family dining room) as opposed to "dinner", especially as a "dinner party", a generally grander affair with guests from outside the household, which would be eaten in the best dining room.[6]

North America[edit]

The distinction between dinner and supper was common in North American farming communities into the twentieth century, especially in the Mid-West and the American South, though today, most Americans consider the two synonyms and strongly prefer the term dinner for the evening meal. During World War II, rations in the U.S. military were still divided into breakfast, dinner, and supper, using the traditional designations for meals. In most parts of the United States and Canada today, "supper" and "dinner" are considered synonyms (although supper is a more antiquated term). In Saskatchewan, and much of Atlantic Canada, "supper" means the main meal of the day, usually served in the late afternoon, while "dinner" is served around noon. "Dinner" is used in some areas, such as Newfoundland and Labrador, to describe the noon meal as well as special meals, such as "Thanksgiving dinner", "flipper dinner" or "Christmas dinner", the evening meal being "supper". The word "supper" is also regionally reserved for harvest meals put on by churches and other community organizations: "fowl suppers" or "fall suppers" (featuring turkey) are common in Canada; "pancake suppers" given by church groups were once a tradition in the United States; and "bean suppers" (featuring baked beans) were traditional in New England and especially the state of Maine.[7]
